After reading the reviews on Google and UrbanSpoon, I decided it seemed like a good idea to try the food at Ka Mei. First off, the establishment looked sterile and boring like a doctors office waiting room. Upon walking in my friends and I were not greeted with any smiles or hellos, it felt like we were barging into someones private area where we were not welcome. The server did not offer any special accommodations for my two year old son, did not ask us if we wanted anything to drink, did not smile. He gave us water and after waiting for about 10 minutes he finally took our order. The dishes all came out at different times and upon trying to the Tofu and Broccoli my friend realized it was disgusting (it was like a chewy yet squishy, deep fried, flavorless sponge) and asked if she could get chicken and broccoli instead. The server sighed and rolled his eyes and said he wasnt sure about that. When our sesame chicken came out the pieces were huge and dry. There was so much breading that it became pasty in my mouth as I chewed it up. It was obvious by the large messy chunks of chicken and vegetables that who ever prepped the food did not have very good knife skills. When we were done and waiting for the check with my son being an impatient two year old, we noticed the server cleaning and clearing all the other tables, yet we sat and waited there for 20 minutes! The entire experience there was TERRIBLE and I will never ever go back. I honestly cant believe there are so many good reviews for this place.

I was worried about finding authentic Chinese food in Pittsburgh when I moved from New York. I was right to be worried. Nothing really compares to the density and legitimacy of New York Chinese restaurants. Regardless, I was pleased to have found Ka Mei. There are very few Cantonese people, much less restaurants, in Pittsburgh. This is one of them. If youre craving pork and century egg congee or steamed fish Cantonese style, you can find it here. It was a little slice of home away from home.

Many of their rice plates and noodles seem to be fine choices. Their fried rice noodles with beef (干炒牛河) is a Cantonese staple, and it was both tasty and sizable for the price. We also wanted a noodle soup but it was late and they apparently ran out of soup. Wasnt too much of a problem, so changed it to a black bean pork rib rice plate order instead. While this one couldve used a little less sauce, the bell pepper and onion were fresh and the rib meat was plentiful.

This is the cleanest, nicest Chinese restaurant in about a fifty-mile radius of Pittsburgh. The food is bar-none great. Its a clean, bright Mecca for mighty good eatin. I dont understand why weve been inundated by Sex-and-the-City snobs who mewl about their every whim not being serviced by the slaves... er, wait staff. Perhaps we may ignore their fever dreams. Ka Mei is totally cool stuff.

Terrible service. Waited 40min for two simple lunches... They were not busy at all. When we sat down we were the only customers at noon on a Wednesday... One other table came 15min *after us and were served their meals about 15min *before us. Owner was rude and defensive when I complained. In live in the neighborhood and there are plenty of better options. Thumbs way down.

This is practical my cafeteria while I studied in Pittsburgh for 5 years. The owner/chef was a chef in Hong Kong who immigrated to the US decades ago. He put a lot of emphasis on healthy cooking and he is at his best when you order simple, home-style dishes. There is no MSG or any artificial favoring, which is a rarity in Chinese restaurants in the US.

This is the best Hong Kong cuisine in the area. Everything Ive ever ordered here has been good. They have a whole wall of photographs, so you dont even have to know Chinese to make selections from the Chinese menu. They also do take out. Cash only. Incidentally, they make an awesome General Tsos. Cash-only op.

Best chinese food Ive ever had. I used to live in Squirrel Hill and would literally eat here every other day for lunch or dinner. I couldnt help myself. The lady knew my order when I would call because she recognized my voice. Everyone should try their General Tsos at least once! And they will be hooked!

Ka Mei is always very quick with take out and as long as youre used to typical take-out Chinese food, youll know exactly what youre getting. Food always tastes fresh and flavor consistent. Its not gourmet, but it is very good.

Dont let the florescent lights bother you. This place has great service and even better food. It is BYO, so visit the nearby beer shop on Murray before stopping in.

If you are looking for Hong Kong style cuisine in Pittsburgh, go to Ka Mei! There is also a menu for more Americanized Chinese food, which is also good.

Best. When you really want to eat good, get the fish of the day. If its not fresh she wont buy it, so if you get it, its awesome.

Expensive. Plus the owner is too rude to nearly all her customers. But the food itself is fine.
