Ive experienced fine dining around the world in various cultures and countries. The first day I moved to Philadelphia, I visited Morimoto and had a few rolls of sushi (not the best Ive had, but it was decent, a tad dry). I decided to go down to this restaurant because its close by and I was craving sushi. Decoration: The decor is poor, and the only nice sight would be the sushi bar and the sushi boats behind it. The seating is not that comfortable, and the music is a mixture of old 80s and recent pop. Food: The miso soup was warm, not hot or cold, simply warm, more on the cold side to be honest. The sushi was alright, a bit dry and drizzled with some Teriyaki-Spiced sauce (sushi should be dry and given the option of soy sauce or topping flavor). The rice was dry too, and the broccoli chicken was like eating Chinese food court food, drizzled in oyster sauce and diluted with a lot of water. You can tell it was poorly prepared because the broccoli was rock hard and cooked quickly. The chicken was tough too and not cooked well. Service: Service was decent, nothing special. Young man quickly seated us down and got us our food. No complaints there. Pricing: Pricing is decent, $5.95 for an average roll of Sushi, but the main course dishes are a bit pricier for this quality of food. Overall: 3 Stars Would I go back? Maybe, but only if Im craving a roll of sushi and miso soup - nothing else. Would I recommend this restaurant? Yes, by all means go try their sushi and soup if youre nearby!

I mean come on! After staying away for a while due to terrible quality, I decided to give Shan Chuan another chance. Ugh what a disappointment, especially for how pricey their dishes are. I got Fried dumplings - by far the most edible part of my order, these were very salty and a little sour in an unsettling way. Dan Dan noodles - very starchy and bland, nothing like the same dish at Han Dynasty. Noodles with greasy, underseasoned peanut sauce and big slices of chicken. Hunan shrimp - interestingly, this was salty, not spicy even a little bit, and had some black beans in it, so I think they just made me the wrong thing? It also had a strong seafood undertaste, as if the shrimp were unrinsed or unfresh. Szechuan beef - the biggest disappointment, this was "more like skin than meat." Ever had general tsos chicken with zero chicken inside? This was like that only sticky rather than crispy. Again, no real spice to speak of. This one was sweet. We couldnt force ourselves to eat enough to find some with actual meat inside. We are throwing about 60% of the food away... I guess thats the upside from a dieting pov. You cant eat yourself sick if the first few bites almost do the trick! Seriously, never again. I dont know why I cant just learn my lesson. Shan Chuan is convenient but really unpleasant to actually consume.

I have been a frequent customer at this restaurant and have always enjoyed the food service and atmosphere. That was until today!!!! I will never be setting foot in this establishment again! The service was horrid. Our waitress was subpar at best. Our shrimp dumplings were way overcooked and fell completely apart. They had to be eaten with a fork and spoon. However, we did not complain. My sushi was half made. Another employee, a male, corrected it. Our server didnt seem concerned at all. After paying our bill, while still seated our waitress came over and rudely proclaimed that the tip was not included in the bill. We informed her that we were well aware of standard billing practices at most restaurants. She then said "Then why isnt there a tip in there?" "You didnt like my service?" Pointing (yes pointing!!) To the check fold still laying open and flat in front of my mate that was in the process of determining the tip. He then reassured the waitress that he fully intended to tip and the service was fine. It was not fine however. The service was horrendous and the restaurant was empty aside from one other table so Im not sure why. We left a five dollar tip for the tacky and rude display and promptly exited. Its a real shame as I really liked this spot. Will not be spending my money here any longer!

This is my "go to" restaurant in the East Falls area. A beautiful area, East Falls is not blessed with a whole lot in the way of dining, and most of the small amount of dining available is not the healthiest, mostly Pizza, Hoagies, fried foods etc.... Shan Chuan is my preferred restaurant for the wide selection of typical Chinese Food, all the way to healthy fare. Shan Chuan is a fusion of different Asian flavors, including Chinese and Japanese and a hit of S.E. Asia. I have my favorites, which are the Teriyaki Salmon, and the Singapore Noodle as well as the occasional Sushi Rolls. The service is always good, whether Im picking up for take out, or dining in. If you live in the East Falls area, and you dont want to travel too fare out, I highly recommend this restaurant.

I like it because its right down the street, and they dont mind if I camp out from time to time with work. (The dining room never seems busy). I only order sushi here, and its usually pretty good. Ive had some phenomenal and some average... and unfortunately, one really really bad peice this past weekend - but the goods far outweigh the bads... so far. Unfortunately, the quality and price of their typical/common rolls is beaten by the Whole Foods and Acme prepared sushi. If your looking for special rolls, it might be more worth it - but not so much for common tuna/salmon/eel rolls.

I USED to order from here all the time, its not too expensive although the rolls are very small. The last couple times I received TERRIBLE service when ordering delivery, the took 2 hours when I live 10 minutes away and the next time completely got my order wrong but refused to resolve their mistake. No Im never ordering here again since they dont value good customers, make careless mistakes then care even less to make amends.

Nice place and great customer service... the food was excellent and the presentation was neat and on point... My friends and I set there for a very long time even after we finished our meal just talking and laughing and enjoying ourselves. We didnt feel rushed or like we were being pushed out of the door.. I will definitely be going back..

Please stop having your paper menus distributed in my neighborhood. I consider them trash and will not patronize your restaurant as long as you continue to do this.

Rip off. The sushi was good, but the lunch deal needed to triple its portion size if they are going to charge 14 plus tax. The side of lettuce did not help.

Food is comparable to what you find in a more metropolitan area. That being said, the food isnt worth the proportionally high prices.

Sushi is great, always fresh and affordable especially for lunch. Place is always clean and we never have had to wait to be seated.
