This past Saturday was my last visit as a patron or performer at The Blue Comet in Glenside. The usual band to perform (who admittedly do a 30s, 40s clarinet/sax led very oldies show) were unable to perform so their leader asked our band to fill in. We were assured that if we played quietly, our blues band would be fine. We have played bars to festivals, and were invited to France to ply Nice and Monaco. We have three albums recorded and have been played on WXPN, among other stations. I mention this not to brag, but to establish that we are professionals. We started on time and played at an almost inaudibly low volume. Completing our second song, an enraged “Scott” entered, ranting “what are you doing here” and “get off my stage.” Apparently our genre of music didn’t fit his bill. OK, I understand; I suppose he’s a “purist” for Rockabilly and 30s, 40s big band music and quiet blues is unacceptable in his “world”.., and it is his bar, so he can call the shots. That’s not really what I have exception with. It was his unethical, brutish manner that was both offensively insulting and unethically un-businesslike. Let me note here that the clientele as well as the workers appreciated what little they heard. In fact, as we packed up a couple complained to the workers for some time that they wanted to hear more. By this time, Scott had vanished as mysteriously as he had appeared. How could this have been handled differently? Well, maybe quietly explaining that our booking was a mistake (from his perspective) and that we could finish our set. Maybe offering us a token compensation for our efforts up to that point would have been fair. (After all, we didn’t book ourselves.) Maybe, just being a gentleman would have been a good place to start. As a long time neighbor in Glenside I am somewhat of a regular at the Blue Comet, but after Scott’s bully like/un-businesslike behavior, I’m through.

The first time I visited Blue Comet I stopped in for a quick bite in the late afternoon. The bartender impressed me by keeping the half dozen late afternoon customers happy while making a fresh, delicious egg salad sandwich for me from scratch while the chef had stepped out. Perhaps surprisingly, (I discovered thanks to a tip) they have the freshest seafood I have managed to find in a long time. Every lobster-lover should take advantage of the $20 Lobster Night Wednesday! It was the freshest and best lobster Ive had since visiting Maine. I also love their large seared sea scallops - I had almost forgotten how delicious truly fresh scallops are! I am very glad the chef prepares these superb ingredients simply, letting the seafoods own flavor shine. I prefer eating in the lovely oasis of the "secret garden" in the rear, which Id rate Excellent in decor, but the front suits well for the atmosphere of the bar and live music nights. The friendly and efficient staff seem to all cooperate with each other to make sure all customers are well attended to. I think this place has something for everyone and I appreciate that it is my neighborhood!

This place has been open and closed for months at a time over the years, but Im so glad its still around. One thing thats been consistent through the turmoil has been the great food, on weekdays or weekends, and its the reason we always come back. Also, one of its old flaws (aloof/unfriendly service staff) has been completely fixed in the last year or two - the servers are like some platonic ideal of a bar wait staff, I cant mention that enough. Super nice and attentive but hip enough to fit well with the semi-retro bar vibe. The only critique I might have is that they could do with a better beer spread. Their selection is alright for common types, but could do with rotating taps - they also dropped odd options like Boddingtons, which was a disappointment. Glenside has no shortage of bars/pubs, but The Blue Comet is the best of them. Good atmosphere, good food, and a classy vibe with just a touch of diveyness to keep it grounded.

I will never return to the Blue Comet. Last night, a few of my friends and I spent over $130 on food and beer. When the time came, we paid our bill. As were waiting for the waitress to return, some guy walks past our table and gruffly mutters, "Around here we give at least 15% tip." Confused, one of us walked up to him and asked what he meant. The guy, it turns out, was the manager or owner. He said that he had heard the waitress complain about our tip. We thought we might have made a mistake with the math; so, one of us went over it with the waitress. Even though our waitress had been really grumpy and unpleasant, we left over 22% tip. She never apologized or explained or anything. The whole thing soured the evening. It was humiliating and embarrassing, particularly since we were taking out a guest from Europe.

Their one male server that works there for some time now, along with the bartender are both young, and very good looking, .. both hot in fact with their attractive haircuts , courteous, hospitable, and well groomed bringing great eye candy for girls and guys. Oysters are succulent, mussels are huge, the sauce for the mussels amazing, drinks are awesome, great crowd and love that they always show Turner Classic on the telly : ) Best restaurant and bar in Glenside, hands down.

We fifty somethings went with our eighty something neighbors and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Monk, our very friendly but extremely professional bartender, added TLC to our deliciously sized drinks and our dinners were outstanding. My wife and I have been 5 times in the last 3 months and each visit brings us back. Kudos to the Kitchen Staff and the wait staff is friendly and prompt. Well go back again... Soon.

Blue Comet is an elegant nod to the past in downtown Glenside. I must have passed everyday months. The front door is black and unassuming but when you walk through the door you time travel to a yesteryear of American Culture. My bartender, Liz, was super helpful and friendly. Ive officially become a regular. If you like martinis they are on special and if you dont mind comfort food the menu isnt bad either.

This is absolutely my husband and I favorite spot! This is our version of the Cheers bar-where everyone knows your name, well at least the servers and bartender. Drinks are a good price, and the food is reasonable. The only thing I wish is for them to have a better menu selection. More wings and seafood variety. I look forward to their food specials; especially the sesame tuna ahi bites....yummy!

Sunday night rockabilly is great. the live band really get you in the mood, the bartenders are nice, service is great, drinks are perfectly mixed. only downfall is the size of this place, its TINY :( parking - you can easily park in the train station lot (its across the street) or even just take the train.

Ive been coming here for almost 15 years, through changes big and small, but this place never loses the intangible greatness that made me love it in the first place. Food and drink are important, and here theyre always good to great, but theres so much more to the experience.
