I saw this place on the travel channel and wanted to give it a go. Waited about 20 minutes to be seated even though there were open tables. 4 guys that were "friends" of the staff came in were seated immediately and got their food in about 15 minutes. Very irritating after waiting 45 minutes and had to watch these "friends" get their food ASAP. Finally got my food which had a small piece of a mans mustache on top, I decided to just pick it off and deal since we had waited so long. After going in to take the first bite off my omelet a LARGE 2 inch what looked to be a pubic hair was cooked into the egg!! Talk about GROSS!! When I notified the waiter he said "oh" and took off with my plate??? That was it...he just kind of stumbled off and couldnt have cared less. That is the point where my mother and I walked out. I will NEVER eat there again!!! The service is horrendous, and the food didnt look to great either. 2 hairs in my food? That is pretty gross, it honestly would not have surprised me to see a whole handful of hair if I had picked through that omelet. I noticed another party that was seated 10 minutes after us also walked out...This place is quickly earning a reputation for terrible service, and bad food. I would have had 10 times the meal and service at McDonalds...and I hate McDonalds! I was taking my Mom out to breakfast for her birthday and this was a bad choice...Thank goodness there are plenty of good restaurants in that area. Skip this place and go to Papa Hydens, or Besaws. I give this place an F Horrible Service Nasty looking Food and Looks FILTHY + the staff looks pretty dirty as well!

Bad service? Thats an understatement. We waited outside in the cold for well over and hour. We were a party of 7 and immediately upon arriving we decided to split our group into two smaller groups so we could be seated quicker. Time after time we watched other groups who we watched sign up after us be seated. Eventually a nicer group who was being called said well this group has been here a lot longer than any of us isnt it their turn? The server then attacked the group yelling at them. We then asked her why she was seating people who came after us before us and she yells us for several minutes. I have never been treated like that by anyone, not to mention a server at a resturant. About 10 minutes later a man came out and asked us to leave saying what we said really upset his coworker. When we said nothing out of line and nothing that was not absolutly true. I have never had an experience that bad at any resturant and me or my family will be sure to never go again. I dont care how good the food is it is most deffinatly not worth being treated like that. I strongly advise everyone to stay away from this resturant.

I had the strangest experience ever here. Just after my boyfriend and I had placed our order, the power went out down the entire block. They told us that although the stove was gas powered, there were no windows in the kitchen and they couldnt see so they would not be able to finish our food. Then, another couple got angry and left, so they actually offered us their food for free (which was fine by us). Halfway through eating it, the lights came back on and so they finished cooing our food and brought it out--mancakes and all. I have never been so full in my life--like, not even after Thanksgiving. And after all of that, they charged us like, a third of the cost of everything. Long story short: it was the best customer service I have ever gotten anywhere, and they were under quite a bit of pressure. Aside from that, the food was yummy , the portions (by themselves) were HUGE, and the diner atmosphere was really fun. I give it two thumbs up!

Iconic Portland breakfast spot. Consistent, friendly. Good. Returned August 11th, 2017, and ordered some items from the menu I had never had before, and my work associate broaden his Horizons by having a veggie omelet, in which he swapped out the mushrooms ( unfortunately all of their mushrooms used in omelets seem to be these things out of a can that look and taste about like dead slugs) for onions. I had the breakfast enchilada, which I modified by removing the chorizo, and adding crisp crumbled bacon. We also had a large fruit bowl which was both beautiful and delicious. I dont know if this is an Insiders Secret, but I always ask for some of the house salsa which is made in-house out of some peppers and has just the right combination of flavor and heat and is spectacular on your omelets and hash browns and everything except the fruit bowl, LOL. It was one of the best meals I had at Stepping Stone Cafe in quite a awhile.

The reviews of this place seem to veer between 1) people who have experienced the Stepping Stones bad service and wont return and 2) people who have experienced the Stepping Stones bad service and seem to think its great to be in a place so edgy and hip. The one thing we can agree on is that the Stepping Stone has bad service. The question is: have you been living in PDX for so long that youve become inured to being treated like garbage by inept, lazy jerks with beards, clunky glasses, and doo rags? Why give this place your business? I wont. Hell, Id rather go to some Dennys and be treated politely by some middle-aged mother of four busting her butt than some sullen 20-something with a sense of entitlement and an attitude (whoever that "hostess" is...short black hair...mumbles...bitchy...FIRE HER IMMEDIATELY!). my two cents

This was a great little brunch spot. For two people, we got a table in like 10 minutes. We did have to move the salt/ pepper/menu holder to the window sill though, but it was still manageable. Service was okay, we sat for about 15 minutes after I arrived (a little bit after my friend got the table) until someone took our order, but I like the fact that servers dont come over every 10 mins to ask how the meal is going. Someone came by once to ask, but that was it. I got a ham & cheese omelette with hash browns, and I really enjoyed it. Wish I couldve added pineapple to it though. Meal was decently priced, at about 10.80 something, $13 with a 20% tip. 4 stats because while the limited space was manageable, it was a bit cramped and I wish that there was more space between tables.

Stepping Stone is off the beaten path of NW 23rd, just enough to make it a destination you have to know about, or find on happy accident. Theres nothing avant-garde on the menu in this cozy little diner, and I think the diners appreciate that. Its comfort food is hearty and delicious. Though, you may experience a wait on weekends due to a Food Network show covering their "mancakes." These giant pancakes literally hang over the edge of the plate, daring you to butter and syrup them carefully. Even one of these perfectly cooked delights will be enough to send you into a post-breakfast food coma, but it will be worth it. My suggestion? Get any one of their omelettes and one mancake. Then prepare for a nap, and not to eat the rest of the day.
