I was at Kells back in July. It may even have been on the Fourth. I went during Happy Hour, looking for something to eat. I was seated immediately, as the rush had not come in yet, and I really liked the look of the establishment. Comfortable, not stuffy. The server was great, and gave me a recommendation for a beer, but Ive forgotten what it was. I think it was a lager. Whatever it was, it was a delicious beer. Im not a big beer drinker, but I do love small crafted beers, and this one hit the spot for me. For dinner, I ordered the shepherds pie. Ive posted a pic of it. It came out not looking like most shepherds pie youd see in an American restaurant, but the potatoes were perfectly browned, and had been placed on the dish in a beautiful pattern. In the center was some type of veal demi-glace that knocked my socks off. It was that good. I was savoring each bite. The one downside was that it wasnt a big dish of food. Maybe it was a smaller plate for happy hour. Whatever. It was the best shepherds pie Ive ever had. The beer I had complemented it well. Location wise, this place on 21st is perfect. Its a great street to stroll around, a little less pretentious than its cousin over on 23d, and plenty of nice places to eat and drink. My hotel was just a couple block away. Definitely worth a return visit next time Im in Portland!

Very, very disappointed. Came in today (St Patricks Day) to grab lunch - fully expecting it to be a madhouse. It actually wasnt terribly busy - we were told 45 minutes for a table, and we put our name in. We were asked for a phone number and the host and hostess suggested we step to the bar to wait. There were maybe 15 people at the bar, tops. After some time, we noticed that guests who had arrived after us were being seated, so we went to check in with the host and hostess. We were told, rudely, that they tried to call my phone, and since I didnt answer (there was live music, how was I supposed to hear?) they bypassed us. Not only that, instead of attempting to re-seat us, they moved us to the bottom of the list - another 45 minutes. I protested that we were 15 feet away at the bar, where they directed us, and they didnt bother to come get us. They said they were "too busy" to do that. I protested some more (politely) and they refused to accommodate us. I set my half finished beer down and left. I wont come back. Oh, and the beer isnt that good.

NEVER GO HERE! ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE NUT ALLERGIES... I ordered the veggie pasty (sp?). When it came it had pesto, which was not listed on the menu. I asked what nuts were used in the pesto before I ate it. They said almonds. Ate some, started feeling a nut allergy reaction, but thought I must be imagining it. Got worse as the night went on and ruined my evening to say the least. Had tickets to the Timbers, but was puking in the bathroom. I called and asked the next day. They admitted that they may have thrown cashews into the pesto that night. They only refunded that dish from our bill, even though I threw up my beer too. I thought that was very cheap of them considering what they did. Will never go back or recommend because they were too cheap to refund my whole bill. They should have paid for my Timbers tix too...

Id almost give this place my 5 stars for the atmosphere alone... just sit here and take in the decor and the conviviality. The food sealed the deal for me. Im Irish, and have ordered a *lot* of shepherds pies. Theirs was right up there with the best of them. A nice touch was a reservoir in the middle if the pie (imagine the well of gravy in a plate of mashed potatoes), filled with what I can only describe as a reduced French onion soup. Delicious. This is probably the only Irish pub I have ever visited that brews their own beers. Their house Irish stout and house IPA were both tasty. Come here to relax and avoid the downtown crowds.

Been hitting this place since it opened... It isnt just the best setting in town that does justice to Irish pubs, it has great food, a perfect group party room upstairs and my favorite hang for cigars downstairs. Music on weekends is always fun. The owners are the perfect hosts. Countless memories in this place. Always love going there and feel like Im at home every time I walk through the doors.

First off, LOL at the person who showed on st paddys day and was surprised by the wait. Kells is a staple for me, a great cigar and a glass of scotch. The food is just great, everytime i have ever been. The service has always been spot on and it has some great character throughout the building. With that said, i would not recommend it to anyone new......seriously stay out

Not good, to say the least. Ordered the Chicken Curry. Not sure where the Chicken was (menu said Breast)....it had about three nuggets. The apples where nowhere to be found...and absolutely no cranberries. No mention that this was in a bowl (which is poutine) and should have been a appetizer. And now for the cost $12.50 for a bowl of fries and curry sauce. NOT GOOD!

MY New favorite. Downtown Kells is a place I dont frequent for various reasons, but after a friend introduced me to the Brew Pub, I know it will become part of our regular rotation. Amazing chicken curry that is both gluten and dairy free. The menu is well marked for those of us with dietary restrictions, and its never overly crowded. Cant wait to go back!

I will always come here for an amazing Breakfast on Sundays, but be warned that there can be an order when they are brewing as they are a real brewery inside! The decor is warm and the fireplace is so inviting I always want to leave my group to sit by it. My English Fiance says the Irish breakfast has the best sausages hes had in America.

The service is absolutely horrid. With the restaurant half full, the kitchen refused the cook their Ulster Fry breakfast because they were too lazy to put a few sausages on the grill. I had to flag down the waitress after 10 minutes to get her to bring me my first drink order. Just avoid this place if you can.

Ive been here as well as the location on 2nd. Both have been great experiences. Very good, fairly priced bar food. Their dry stout draft is fantastic, I like it better than Guinness. Very tasty fish and chips, and under $13. I love their beer batter. This place deserves a better rating.

+1 quick service +2 great food +1 Amazing atmosphere +1 great seating options (private, couch, wood chairs, outside) +1 helpful knowledgeable staff -2 migraine level noise. Soccer game plus radio plus live band. Worth eating there outside events. I can get migraines elsewhere.

Great staff and beers! spent a bit of time there the Irish red is amazing! this is a great place to go for happy hour after work. they have a small parking lot so if you go right after work you can grab a spot then a pint and some wings! Kells beers are 2 bucks off on happy hour!
