I really dont know why this place has so many negative reviews. We went for lunch on a Tuesday and it was pretty empty, so we were seated and served our dim sum almost immediately. If youre the type that thinks P.F. Changs is considered Chinese food, then you probably wont like this place. Its also nothing like east coast Chinese food, so dont go in expecting that either. What you can expect is very good dim sum, with decor that makes me feel like Im back in China, all without knowing how much youre going to pay for it. They fill out a sheet for every dish you take, but its too cryptic understand. We got a lot of food and it only came to $18 between the two of us. I would definitely go again. One thing to be careful about is going after theyve been serving for a while. On my second visit, we showed up near the end of lunch and some of the food was a little colder than I would have liked. Overall, we left stuffed and for not that much.

Selected HOL randomly while visiting Portland for the first time. We got there and there were no customers (it was around 2pm, a little after lunch hour but still..) First we used the bathroom which was DISGUSTING and made us really doubt the cleanliness of the whole place... but we decided to stay because we were so hungry. I ordered General Tso Chicken which was decent, but not the best Ive ever had. We also got some type of Lo Mein.. which was tasteless, at best. The whole place looked pretty shabby and the food was blah. Hey! I just remembered that I never got the Egg Flower soup that was supposed to come with my lunch! We went up front to pay and I couldnt stop laughing while trying to hold back my vomit at the guys (owners?) nails which were about an inch long. Such a gross place, I would NEVER return! *ALSO- the tea was terrible and the egg roll was over cooked, like other reviews state.

Look, House of Louie is pretty dingy, the servers are a little surly, and Old Town/Chinatown is a gauntlet of baddies and danger, but their hot chili oil is wonderfully smoky/hot/crunchy--absolutely have had dreams about this oil, no lines/no crowds (big plus when you wanna get in & out), and comforting dim sum more than make up for their shortfalls. Order special items like baby bok choy as soon as you sit, it is made fresh and takes a little time. I have had some of my most positive (and honestly also negative) dining experiences here, but the best far outweigh the worst. If you can muster the courage to see past the grime, grit, and the decay, maybe you can also find the glory of a crisp, chewy and gingery Ginger Chicken.

What ever happened to this place? 2 different orders of dim sum with chicken were undercooked. We both spit it up at the same time. The peppers in oil for dipping was completely burnt. I asked for one that wasnt burnt, she gave me attitude & said they were all that way. Tea was tasty, but how can you mess up tea? Walls were food stained & dirty. Every surface was dirty & dusty. Bathroom was dirty. Fruit flies kept landing in our food & soy sauce. We only went to the House of Louie because Fong Chong closed permanently just across the street. Im definitely going to stick with Jin Wah or Wongs in the future. The Oregon health inspector needs to revisit the House of Louie.

My family and I have been dining at House of Louie since 2000 and the food has not changed... but in the best way possible! We have always been impressed with the consistent "YUM" when eating a shrimp noodle. In our 17 years of dining at the restaurant a lot has changed surrounding it, including the addition of Portlands homeless population. The only reason I am giving a star down is due to cleanliness, I have always used the restroom pre-eating at House of Louie because its not known for being sanitary. However, I am here to preach that in 17 years no one I know has every had food-born illness from this fantastic dim sum restaurant!

Church group ate here before Classical Chinese Garden tour. Greeting is very surly. They dont bring menus but try to force the dim sum on you which ends up being very expensive in the end. We ordered lunch specials off the menu and were very disappointed. Tea was terrible tasting, egg roll was small and over fried, and the entree was not up to par either. Great disappointment especially after eating at Hong Kong 97 in Gladstone. Chinese Garden is absolutely incredible and worth repeat visits but will never visit House of Louie again. Big tourist trap and lousy food at best. Wait staff should definitely enrol in Charm School.

I love the dim sum usually always fresh and a good selection. However, today I did find a some sort of a metal wire in my lobster tail when confronting the waitress about it she just grabbed it and just said sorry. The place usually is empty which is a plus but the walls, seating areas and bathrooms are dirty and sticky not a clean environment at all. The waitresses are usually not friendly and very short and rude as well. Only reason I started goingg to House of Louie because my favorite place down the street closed Fung Chung. I will continue to keep looking for good dim sum places!

Man! I used to come here with my family way back in the day! Always on a Sunday when dim sum was being served. A few items that I really enjoyed there were the rice noodles stuffed with shrimp and then doused in sweet soy sauce, and the other was sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf. A tip though, timing is everything. Dont come in too early and not too late, usually around 11 to 12pm is perfect because by then the all the different dishes start coming out piping hot and ready to be consumed. Variety is scarce in the morning, and the food isnt hot anymore after 2pm! Ahh, nostalgia!

Ah yes, this was the dim sum restaurant I went to with my family while in Portland. I found the decor of the restaurant old, run down, and dirty with hardly any business, fitting in quite well with the rest of Old Chinatown in Portland. The dim sum was at best mediocre, at times tasting like reheated leftovers. I was disappointed in the limited selection and the size of some of the dishes which were rather pricey. Still, this is one of the few surviving Chinese establishments in Old Chinatown and so you might not have much choice if your in the area.

Would not recommend this restaurant. The food was okay but the facility was filthy. Disgusting bathrooms and all the furniture was damaged and repaired with duct tape. The carpets were old and generally the restaurant smelled like stale old cooking oil. There was only one other patron in the restaurant and we were eating at 6pm... I guess the locals know what to expect. We should have kept on walking after we commented on the restaurants name not being very Chinese.

disgusting disgusting disgusting. People stay away from this nasty place, you can find better food of the sidewalk. Bathrooms are filthy seems like all they do is hose it down at night. We found food with the preps hair attached, gross! After notifying the wait staff we were given a brief apology and charge for the hair! How rude is that? Do yourself and your immune system a favor avoid this place unless you want a bit of extra oil with your chow fun.
