Went to HopWorks with my family (who are visiting from CO) today and am very disappointed by the service. My father asked if he could have a grilled cheese sandwich (not on the adult menu, but there is one on the kids menu and its just bread and cheese) and our waitperson, Eli, said they dont have one. When my mom said, "Its just bread and cheese, Im sure if you ask the kitchen they can make it" our waitperson said they "dont do things like that". We asked what "that" was and Eli said "make things that arent on the menu". SO RUDE. It is on the kids menu- charge us double if you want but why give my senior-aged dad flack about wanting a simple grilled cheese that would take just about zero effort to make? I said we should just leave, as I dont take well to people being short with my parents, and then Eli said, "Well I can go in the back and ask the kitchen if you want"...would have been really nice if that my dad wasnt made to feel like he was doing something wrong by taking this offer up- he declined because he was embarrassed about all the hubbub being made over it. He didnt want to leave, so we all ordered our food and he got a black bean burger. We are vegetarians and my partner ordered the minestrone soup but was given the Tuscano soup- he ended up eating meat before he realized it was the wrong soup and when he told the our waitperson she said, "Just kidding!" and took back the Tuscano soup and brought him the minestrone he ordered. An apology would have been nice. When we all got our orders we all enjoyed the food and beer, it was very good actually. I had the Prestobella, my mom and partner both got the tempeh rueben and my dad got the black bean burger and we all liked our dishes and shared bites with one another. Had it not been for the terrible service I would recommend HopWorks. There is a kid area that is super cute and its a nice environment. Shame that the waitstaff has ZERO customer service skills. We will not return.

I was really excited when I heard this place was going to open up in SE Portland, and in the years its been open, its really lived up to my expectations. The eco-sustainable design, construction, and business practices were probably the first things that caught my attention when I heard they were opening, and I think they did a great job seeing that these priorities were implemented in the finished product. The beers are great, especially if youre into plenty of NW hops in your ales and lagers. The space is large, and very attractively designed, utilizing a lot of reclaimed wood and recycled/re-purposed bike parts. The food is definitely above average for pub grub. The service is always friendly, but not always knowledgeable when it comes to the beers, which bothers me a bit when Im at a brewpub. Still, anyone who knows a thing or two about beer, shouldnt need any help from their server to navigate the taplist, as Hopworks usually sticks to pretty straightforward traditional styles. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is ride my bike to Hopworks during some of the great outdoor events that they host. Ive attended the 2008 fresh hop festival, and the 2009 bike-to-beer-fest, portland cheers to belgian beers, and zwickelmania here, and its always a really great time. The brewery really bends over backwards to make sure that the events live up to even the highest of expectations, and large appreciative crowds flood the property as a result. Great beer, great atmosphere, great events, and a unique experience, even in a city overflowing with brew pubs.

Nice urban brewery atmosphere where we sat, on the back deck, away from the noisy kids. Great beer of course. Food was not so special, service was pretty poor. By the time we had our food delivered, we had no silverware, no napkins, and no one to call on to bring them to us so we sat there for nearly five minutes waiting for someone to come around while we picked at it with our fingers. Its hard to find a person to blame since they divide up the responsibilities - someone to take your order, another person to deliver your beers, and yet another to bring you food. And Im sure it was a totally different person that readied the table before we got there. So no one takes a blame, no one learns from their mistakes. As for the food, I had a Calzone. The inside veggies were never fully cooked. It was like a salad wrapped in pizza. I would suggest sauteing the insides prior to wrapping it - especially the onions. I usually eat everything when I eat out (I hate to waste) but I could not eat it all. The onions stole the palate. The only thing that makes the resturaunt worthy is the beer. Next time I swing by, Ill just have a couple of beers, no food.

This is our go-to spot when we know we want to go out to eat or entertain friends. The beer and pretzels are enough to make me a repeat customer; the lager mustard is to die for (Id put it on everything if I could). I have to yet to try any of their beer that is outright bad--they had an Apple Hefeweizen that was a little bland, but thats really about it--and their sampler gives you a pretty good spread of everything they have to offer for a really good price. As for the food, I dont know that I would recommend the pizza; I judge pizza harshly, and for some reason, their pizza just seems a LITTLE too thin and doughy for my taste, but that might be something someone else is into. You cant go wrong with their calzones, the minestrone, or the tofu po-boy (Im a vegetarian, so thats obviously swayed what Ive tried). AND they frequently host events to debut their beers where they watch movies and/or give away free stuff (lets just say a man in a yeti suit gave me a high five and a free can Abominable Winter Ale). It’s May of 2013 and I just attended a wonderful HUB “Mug Club” Member Party, and over four years after my original review I still believe everything I wrote about HUB in 2009. I am a former Oregon brew pub founder; brew master, and brewing instructor: In my opinion Christian Ettingers Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) is currently the best brewery in Portland. Ive enjoyed every ale & lager this brewer has made. In addition to being a great brewer Christian is also a maverick businessman who has created his new brewery from scratch and has maintained a noble commitment to building and running his business in an environmentally sustainable way. Christian has created the coolest Brew Pub in Portland. I salute his incredible achievement. If you dont visit Hopworks Urban Brewery youre really missing out. Besides making the best quality beer in Portland HUB makes the best handmade black bean burger in town. Enjoy…tell them Jeff (Brandon Monks Brother) sent you!

The beer was on point. However my wives drink was rimmed with salt instead of sugar after she ordered the Candied ginger lemonade. When the drink was returned and asked for another it seems as though the drink was simply poured into a sugar rimmed glass. The result was a salty sugar confused mess. We also waited on our pretzels and cheese so long that when that when the wait staff was prompted about our order they seemed to realize they hadnt yet put in our order. The food when it finally arrived (rocket man pizza.) it only had three slices cut out of it. We had to ask to have the rest cut so it could be eaten. No one seemed to think that this was out of the ordinary which leads me to believe that this is how business is done around here. My advice is grab a growler to go for this place.
