I would not eat at this restaurant if they paid me to do so. Im in town traveling on business and had the desire for some good hope style Mexican food, so I went to this restaurant, if you can call it that, against the recommendations of the hotel which suggested a different establishment. I happen to be seated at a table which to my surprise had a view of the kitchen. While reading the USA today and enjoying a corona, I happen to glance left to see someone fixing a plate when suddenly using the utensils apparently became to much of a bother. I stayed focused on that plate wondering if it would be mine, given that it looked like my crane Asada his was picking up with his hands. I was taken back by the fact that they brought that plate to me so I refused it, and quite frankly, at that point I would have refused any plate given their lack of proper food preparation. Im not a dog to which you can grab food with your hands to serve my plate. To bad the blew that desire for Mexican food. I would think twice before ever eating at this establishment unless you dont care where the cooks hands have been before he picks up your food and throws it on your plate, for which youre paying.

I have eaten here a few times. At best the food was fair. Once it took us about an hour to get our food. I recently called to get take-out for lunch because I was wanting something different. They have a sign hanging outside that says 7.95 Lunch Special. I told the lady who answered that I didnt have their menu in front of me, but that I wanted three lunches to go so that I could continue working on my project. She suggested carne asada, which is typically the most expensive thing on the menu in any Mexican restaurant. I suggested a beef burrito which is typically cheaper. She said that she would take care of me. When I arrived, she wanted $40 for three "lunches" that were full on dinners. Guess what? They chopped up the expensive carne asada and put it in a burrito (which was actually more like an enchilada). The carne asada was tough and overcooked. With sales tactics that leave clients feeling like that they have just been had, they wont be around much longer.

Authentic Mexican served by Hispanic gals who are nice, attentive and care if youre served on time. Food was hot. So was the plate. I liked the enchiladas, rice and refried beans. I didnt like the taco shell. Fried corn like some other Mexican dishes. My fella liked his meal. We both thought the Iced tea was good. I was so excited about our decision to buy a used car we had just looked at that my appetite was off. Perhaps Ill try again when were in that neighborhood and give them another try. Parking in back with nice entrance from there. I saw folks picking up food to go. Obvious bar in back. Nice atmosphere in whole place including restroom. Give it a try, especially if you dont have any dietary restrictions, or if youre willing to set them aside for taste and experience.

While traveling on business here in Portland, I thought I would try and find a really good Mexican restaurant to enjoy on my last day here. I hit the jackpot with Catalinas on NE Sandy Blvd. The place was not very crowded, but the food and sevice was awesome. I asked the waitress why it was pretty much empty at lunch. She said theyve just come under new management and are trying to live down the previous reputation they had for serving sub-par food. Let me tell you, the new owners are doing a GREAT job and the food was the best Ive had in a very long time. I even created a google account just so I could post. Bottom line, if youve been here before and were disappointed, try it again! I am certain you will not be disappointed again. Cheers!

I see similar reviews of people complaining about the predictability of this place yet theyre ordering the combinations. The combinations are not meant for people looking for originality. This place offers some great authentic Mexican food if you order things other than the combination. The Tacos al Carbon are delicious here. The shrimp cocktail is average but thats the case in most Mexican restaurants outside of Sinaloa. The Mojarra was pretty good if you like whole fried fish. And as far as something predictable the cheese enchiladas are terrific here!

This is a wonderful place with great service, but when it comes to the food i would get anything but the nachos. One of the most simple things to make, they not only forgot my order and the whole table was served before me. But my chips were burned to hell. I can say that it is not nine bucks worth of food. Next time i come here (not very likely) i will get something else that is cheaper and probably worse... But great service though

I come here for lunch whenever I get the chance, which is not often, the to-go service is always prompt and the food is FANTASTIC in my opinion. The hard taco shells are fried up fresh and crispy to order and the portions are generous. The only thing I dislike about El Sombrero is that its not right next to my house.

Go to Mexican sit down. Its the closest to California sit down Mexican food you can get in Portland. This salsa is spicy and flavorful. Their chile rellenos and carne asada is so good. Ask for a fried jalepenos with your meal. They are a fantastic compliment. Seriously you cant go wrong with anything on the menu.

Very busy and service was slow. Walked in with a separate couple and they received service / food prior to us. We were seated and order placed before other couple. It seemed if you ordered water with your meal, you were ignored. I will look somewhere else for a traditional mexican meal.

THE best Mexican food Ive ever had at a restaurant, had to write a review, my first! It was that good ssoooo good. Would have given 5 stars buy the floor was dirty, the employees had attitude and thier personal belongings were all on a table so no one could sit there. But THE FOOD.OMG.

Had the chips and salsa, then ordered chile verde, which came with beans, rice, lettuce. Not out-of-this-world good, but good. It is owned by the same chain that runs the Cathedral Tapatia in Vancouver, and all the Muchas Gracias fast-food restaurants in the region.

Not only is this location tucked away on Sandy and Family owned and they do genuinely care, so customers is perfect in my opinion also its tottaly underrated it would be packed out all the time if there were some new apartment or condo development along this area

This is the Mexican restaurant I love to come to. We drive out from Gresham to stop here. All the staff are super kind. I almost always get the Chili Colorado, and its one of the best in Portland that Ive had.
