We went as a group of four last Friday night. We were seated at a table near the entrance of the main dining area. The place was beautiful and very nicely decorated. Overall good experience. My only complaint is about the service. Our waitress was rude and seemed to purposely avoid our table (more on that later). We ordered drinks along with our food. 20 minutes later, we had already had to ask the waitress for our drink again. In total, we gave her three reminders before the one drink was brought out. We asked the very attentive busboy for the drink, and he had one made and brought out within minutes whereas the waitress put blame on needing to make more of the tea, even though the busboy clearly did not have the same problem. The waitress avoided our table. She went to other tables around us to see how they were doing, but I do not recall her doing that with ours. She refused to split the check for us, and handed our bill off to another waitress to give to us even though she walked right past our table and to another one at the same time. We were charged extra for the flat bread brought as a table appetizer in the beginning when we asked for more (similar to that of chips at Mexican restaurants, who typically dont charge more for more chips). It was the most expensive Indian restaurant I have been too with everything extra costing $2-5. Usually my partner and I can get Indian for $30 whereas this ran us $40. That night, we left the waitress tip to the busboy. He was the one helping us and bringing our items whereas the waitress avoided us, never acknowledged our disappointment and never apologized for the lack of quality service. Thanks busboy!

Looking for a fantastic dining experience? Then look no further. The East India Company is simply one of the best Indian restaurants in the Portland area in my opinion. The atmosphere is a essential hallmark to enjoying a unique dining experience as well as receiving good service and quality foods that are freshly prepared for each guest. This is what you can expect at East India Company. As for the abundance of delicious and delectable menu options, some of the highlights of my experience that I would strongly recommend trying: Tandoori Khumbi, grilled mushrooms marinated with herbs, fresh ginger and Tamarind chutney. These are great. Laziz Paslian, grilled lamb chops is a must as well as the Paneer Tikka, a grilled homemade cheese skewed with onions peppers then grilled in the Tandoor oven. If you enjoy seafood then I strongly recommend their tandoori salmon as well as tandoori shrimp. The flavors from the tandoor oven truly make it. I mean, its that good! Saag Paneer is also one of my favorite vegetarian dishes and East India Company knows how to make it just right. Whether you choose the homemade cheese or chickpea with the saag both are fantastic. This restaurant has so many delicious choices on their selective menu and I dont think you can go wrong with trying any of them. I hope that you will enjoy this restaurant as much as I have.

East India Company is an excellent spot for indian food in Portland. I usually end up going for lunch. There is one little caveat for lunches there. It is a fixed menu, so if you are a huge fan of variety, that could be an issue. However, they will let you order from the dinner menu if you do not see anything you like for lunch. One thing that is great about them is they are very accomodating. And, if you are "in the know," you can order stuff that is not on the menu and they will make it for you. On to the food, EIC has some of the the best samosas I have ever consumed. They are amazing. Sometimes I go just for the samosas. The naan is also amazing and better than 90% of indian food restaurants I have eaten at in the US. The Kabobs are also very good, I highly recommend the paneer, its excellent. Now, the only reason I am giving it 4 stars and not 5, is the curry. I have had more flavorful indian curry than what they serve at EIC. Its good, not great, in my very humble opinion. The way they make it could be extremely traditional and I might have absolutely no idea what I am talking about, but for my personal preferences, I am not blown away. So yes, go there. Despite not loving the curry, I still think its the best indian food I have tried in Portland.

We have come here a few times and enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately, this time everything was messed up from the beginning. First, we get seated and then get moved due to another reservation. Next, 2 tables after us have their order taken. 26 minutes later our waitstaff is there to take care of us. Manager arrives and tells us she is not even scheduled tonight but is around covering and their owner is here with guests and they have to take care of them. Very politely offered appetizer on the house. Our order gets delivered ( appetizer, drinks and entree),and few minutes later a second appetizer (samosa chat) arrived. The waitstaff placed it and then grabbed it back saying it was for another table. Finally, we are all done and by the time we could get our check it took forever. Manager gets to the table and tells us our samosa chat was on the house, we had to explain how it got taken away in seconds. Overall, sad and disappointing experience. They did discount drinks but it was just the pain of waiting and encountering one mistake after another and no genuine interest of remedying the situation.

Eating at this place ranks as one of the most dehumanizing experiences in my life.Unfortunately, what most reviewers say is true. The service is extremely rude and almost demeaning. There is an Indian waitress who is literally rude and offensive. They are specifically very rude to Indians/Indian look alikes. Each time I get dragged to this place, one bitter experience after another follows. The last time I went , they added 18% gratuity to my bill and brought it out for a party size of 2 and a toddler. Smart -people ? They lost the 2% as I never tip less than 20%. The previous time , it was a 30 minute wait in the cold in front of an empty restaurant as I " did not have reservations ". I also noticed a couple (with a small child who was trying to fall asleep,) asking for a booth. All the booths were empty and it was almost closing time . The poor parents were refused the booth as " they were meant for a size of 5 " If you are very interested in an experience of being treated rudely and served passable Indian food, you have reached the right place .Look no further

I have never written review on any restaurant, but this time I wish to let all who follow reviews to try new restaurants know about this place from my experience. I prefer to visit twice or more before suggesting a restaurant to any of my friends. After my first visit to East India Co: Grill & Bar, I (with my wife and 4 family friends) discovered that this place is definitely not for Indians who know the taste of Indian dishes. The biggest lunch on their menu can hardly satisfy an average 3 year old Indian kids appetite. Not a single item is prepared as they should be. We created lot of fun out of our pathetic situation and enjoyed the time. Looking at the size of the dish portions supplied to us I told my friends that this is how famine looks like. Usually this is how I enjoy in a restaurant that I do not like. Obviously, the waiter and the Manager understood that we would express our dissatifaction on his face without any hesitation and so the Manager did not even dare to talk and check with us for a feedback. We all had an early dinner at home that day.
