Let me start off by saying that Chef Doublas Soriano has created an absolute gem in Newport! As a chef myself from the Minneapolis area, it takes a lot for me to be moved to the point of writing a restaurant review. Let me set the stage. I went to Newport with my wife and kids last month, and still remember the food and experience vividly. We live in MN, but Im a native Oregonian - this was my first time being back in 20 years. To start off with, the front of the house staff was on point! An inviting and professional host, a very knowledgeable yet personal server, and a great view of the sea lion docks and the bay. The decor was modern, yet casually simple and elegant, with all the colors and wood reminding you of the ocean. My wife and I loved it so much, we took pictures and plan on redoing a several rooms in our house in similar decor. Now lets talk about food. One of the things I cannot get in MN (and have craved since leaving OR) is razor clams; when I saw the Razor Clam & Poached Eggs on the menu I had to get it. The clams were PERFECTLY prepared, the crispy potato cake and baby spinach were ideal accompaniments, and the champagne hollanaise was light and silky. Could not have been a better homecoming! We also had had the impeccable Bay Shrimp ceviche for an appetizer that was beautifully done! The other plates in our party were the Crispy Maple Baked Salmon Salad, the Grilled Ham and Cheese, and the Rock Fish Tacos. We all shared bites of each others meals and I was equally impressed with the others. Clearwater Restaurant was a veritable gem on the Newport, OR waterfront. Our meal was so memorable I asked to meet Chef Soriano afterwards to thank him for the amazing meal. He was humble, grateful, and his passion for celebrating the bountiful fruits of the ocean really came out. Congratulations Chef on an AMAZING place!

I had a reservation at 7:45 pm on Valentines Day, when my girlfriend and I got there about that time I announced who I was and observed the hostess scanning the reservation list to find my name crossed out. I could tell a bit of a holly crap moment from the hostess but she kept it to herself trying to figure out what to do next. She asked questions about my reservation and informed her that I originally wanted an upstairs window seat near the fireplace. At that point the staff casually did what they could to accommodate and keep quiet that I had lost my table to someone else named Christopher who came in around my reservation time. I later found that out because I just had to ask what happened to my table. After a while wait we got the exact table I wanted. I thought everyone did a good job keeping us welcomed. My girlfriend and I are pretty laid back so we just went with the flow. There was one girl working there with short blonde hair that I would probably tell her to find another job , for the look on her face when we went outside to smoke a cig and said on the way out "we had enough we are out of here" but then laughed and said just kidding we are smoking a cigarette; that girl with the short blonde hair had the ugliest face and eye cutting look that would be something that compliments a toilet bowl of floating deuces. All in all we had a great time with everything that happened from beginning to end. My girlfriend and I came up with this......The food was so good, we didnt have time to enjoy the view. Defiantly going to go back.

Ive read other reviews that gave 4 stars because they compared it to other coast restaurants. Mine will be based on all of my experiences as a whole. The food saved our experience. The restaurant is clean and new, seems recently updated. The hostess didnt keep things straight and had to go check upstairs and downstairs each time someone came in (it wasnt busy...) and the service was sub par. Within 5 minutes of being there I watched a food runner spill an entire drink on a table then just stand there awkwardly, heard staff members call each other names (and not in a joking way), and saw a full staff find a way to ignore the few tables that were there. We ordered only to find out 10 minutes later they were out of the entree - how is that not figured out faster? We heard 5 or more glasses break behind the bar with subsequent swearing or jeering which is not what we came for. The food was the saving grace. It was cooked and seasoned well and was perfect temperature; compliments to the chef. When the server came back to the table she had a full mouth of food - the entire staff left the floor and were clearly eating in a back room. Im all for them eating too, but probably not everyone all at once when they are clearly not washing their hands when they go back to tables - she wiped her mouth with her fingers, licked them clean, then served another table calamari. Gross. Overall this place had a long way to go to operate effectively, and if I were the manager I would have some serious conversations with my staff about a professional environment.

Clearwater Restaurant is a decided step up from all the places mainly offering chowder and fish & chips. We were in a bit of hurry, on a true lunch hour, and had an initial problem of having no one to wait on us after getting seated. When staff finally determined who was to wait on us, we skipped ordering appetizers (which look fabulous) to save time and went right to ordering entrees. We went with one each of our waitpersons favorite menu items, the Crab Mac& Cheese and the burger to share. The burger was BIG, but more well done than the medium we ordered. Still, it was juicy and seasoned wonderfully. I think, if cooked to order, Clearwaters burger could be the best burger in Newport. The Crab Mac& Cheese was equally delicious, simply decadent with creamy, cheesy goodness and a good amount of crab. The fries, crispy outside with perfectly cooked centers, were probably the best Ive had anyplace. I want to give this place five stars so that it stays around, but cant ignore the initial service glitch or over done burger. Were going to make it a point to come back for dinner very soon to work our way through the appetizers and try a few of the beers on tap with our entrees. Ill update then.

We were spending three days on the Oregon coast, the first day we ate at Kylos, an old favorite. The second day we were in Newport and we decided to try the Clearwater . We stopped in for a late lunch and have definitely found our new favorite spot on the coast. The fish tacos were very good, the fish moist and sauteed to perfection. The Alscea burger served on a brioche roll and accompanied by garlic truffle fries qualifies hands down as the best burger I have eaten in all my 54 years. Our last day at the coast we looked at each other asking where to go and all three of us in unison said the Clearwater. We had the same server as the day before, Jennifer and she was absolutely delightful. Attentive, polite, informed, all around A Plus to their wait staff. The food on our second visit was as good if not better than the previous visit. The appetizer of calamari was cooked to perfection, the entrees excellent, but save room for dessert, the bread pudding was to die for. My only complaint is that I had to go back to Seattle and cant come here tomorrow as well.
