Normally I do not write reviews but as a manager of a restaurant in Ashley, Ohio I felt I had to write this one. I was with a few friends in Delaware and decided to take them to the Hamburger Inn for lunch. They had never been, so I was excited to take them for some old school diner food. Especially the onion rings and cinnamon rolls which I have every time I go there with their good ole bacon cheese burger. We walked in and asked if we could sit outside on the patio because it was a nice day and we could all sit together since there were not 5 seats available inside at the same counter. After a few minutes of standing there a waitress said we could just have a seat wherever we wanted. I asked if we could sit on the patio and she said no, that the patio was not open. I asked to speak to a manager hoping that they could open it for us so we could all sit together, we would not have minded waiting. The manager came and I explained that we would all like to sit together and asked if he would mind opening the patio since there was no place for all of us to sit at the same counter inside. The manager, Mike, said he had sent the patio waitress home and he was busy and wasnt going to open the patio for just 5 people, that it was more trouble than he wanted to "deal with" at the time, but we could ask other customers if they would mind moving so we could all sit together, then just walked away. I found this extremely unprofessional and appalling that he would even suggest that we ask other customers to interrupt their lunch and move. And the restaurant wasnt that busy, people were just spread out or I would never have asked. I did not expect this from the Hamburger Inn. I have always had great service and good food so this came as a shock. I stood there for a moment in disbelief and embarrassment hoping it was a joke and that he was in fact going to open the patio, he did not. Needles to say I did not get the chance to share the great food and homeyness of the Hambo. I only wish that I had come later in the day with my guests when Karen, Jeff, or Jamie were working as I know they would have had no issues with opening the patio for us. We ended up next door at Typhoon , where not only were they pleased to have us, but happily added another table to the patio to seat us all together. I would rather have spent the $113 on onion rings, burgers, beer, and cinnamon rolls than oriental food but it just didnt happen. At my restaurant customers are never "more trouble than I want to deal with".

I rarely write reviews, but in this case I am. I was in The Hamburger Inn and the food was very good as always, and the service was excellent. However I was appalled at the way I saw a server being treated a few days ago and it has bothered me ever since because my daughter is a server at another restaurant in Delaware and had this happened to her I would hope someone would do the same for her as I am for your server. The server was asking about an order she had made a mistake on and the person she was speaking to about it yelled at her in front of the whole dining area and called her a moron and asked her if she were stupid. It made us all feel very uncomfortable to say the least. I have been coming to The Hambo for 8 years and I have never had a bad experience except on this occasion. The man I am speaking of, whose name is Mike Cram, and come to find out he is the General Manager, was the one who treated that poor girl so terribly. I have seen him on a few occasions and have actually had him approach us at the counter asking if everything was ok with our meal and was not impressed by him then, especially when I had asked for more syrup and, instead of getting it for me, he said he would "look for my waitress and get her to bring it". And I am even less impressed now after seeing his treatment of employees. I can not believe Bill and Anita would tolerate such behavior even if they do not own it anymore outright. I hope that this information will be passed on to the person above him and that measures will be taken. Again, The Hambo is a Delaware iconic restaurant that has served some of the best food in town and has always had a good staff, those who have been there for long periods like Santiago, Jeff, Karen, Ashley, Mikey, and Jamie have always made it a pleasure to come back again and again. It is a shame one person is ruining the Hambo name. In talking with the other customers I was told that this is not the first time this has happened. I just had to write this because of my daughter and for that poor, embarrassed waitress who was upset but still did her job.

We often drive from Columbus to eat at the Hamburger Inn because the food is always fast and good and we always ask for Karen as our waitress, she is always fun and very attentive. We had never had the onion rings because we always get the mushrooms but they were out. But Jeff the Manager was correct when he said that the onion rings were the best in 5 states ! Steve was very helpful in suggesting we get a dozen cinnamon rolls instead of 3 and they barely made it back to Columbus ! My husband ate 4 before we got home! There was only one issue we had in an otherwise perfect experience. Karen was busy and we asked a man that was wearing a black chefs coat (we later found out he was the general manager named Mike) if he would mind getting us some cups so we could take our tea with us, he asked who our waitress was and we said Karen but that she was busy and we saw her go to the back, he said he would try to find her and my husband said we were about to leave, we had already paid our ticket, and could he please just get cups to put our tea , that was when Mike said that he didnt wait on people he wasnt a waitress. To say the least we were shocked and upset especially when he went to find Karen and came back to say she was in the restroom and would be out in a minute. My husband got slightly angry and said he could have got cups for us for the time it took him to find her ! Mike said again, he wasnt a waitress he was the general manager and didnt wait on people. If this is the way the general manager treats customers, I doubt you will be getting many returning if they come in contact with Mike. As I said we often drive from Columbus just to eat at the Hamburger Inn , but we will call ahead, not only to make sure Karen and Jeff are working, but to make sure Mike is not. I really hated that I had to write about this but it upset my husband and I greatly and ruined our experience and would hate for other customers to be treated this way. We never got our cups either ! Sincerely, Edna McCord
