Milanese seems to be one of the older remaining establishments in Poughkeepsies Little Italy. It is still family owned and operated, and given the scarcity of old school Italian--let alone decent Italian--up in the Hudson Valley. Coming in, their was a big private party covering 2 dining rooms, with the nicer back dining rooms being used for regular patrons. There were a few other tables to start with several more as we left, so they were fairly busy. Our waitress was fine except for disappearing when we wanted the check at the end. There were kids darting between the private party rooms making a racket, but that doesnt really bother me. To start, we got a cold antipasto platter, which was alright. It had some good salami and some peppers too, but was weaker on the cheese side with only a little bit of fresh mozzarella and some cold cuts. I wanted to try their chicken parmigiana, which they labeled on the menu as "the best youll have in your life". Unfortunately, they were out of it because of a private party that was going on. This was really annoying, as you cant reasonably say that about a dish on the menu and then just run out, let alone having that dish be chicken parm! My Mom wanted to try it too. Instead, I got the cavatelli bolognese. It was merely okay. The bolognese sauce wasnt bad but wasnt anything remarkable: it tasted muted. The cavatelli were mushy and I didnt enjoy them at all. The dollop of ricotta on top was a nice touch but it also helped contribute to a lack of salt in the dish. My familys dishes ranged from mediocre to decent otherwise; nobody was impressed.

As soon as my husband started on his main dish, both he and I saw a long blond hair intertwined through the cheese. He pulled it out, hoping that it might have been something else, but no, it indeed was a long blond hair. The waitress who was also watching immediately said she will take it back and have them make another one. The do over dish arrived 15 minutes later. As soon as my husband used his knife to cut into the food, he knew that it was the SAME food that the waitress had taken back to be replaced. He knew it because, before he had realized that there was a hair in the first dish, he had made a cut with his knife, which sliced through the piece, but had not spread the piece apart. And, that cut was still there in the "replaced" dish. Rather than make a fuss about it, we quietly asked the waitress to pack it up, and threw it out as soon as we got out of the restaurant. They did not charge us for his dish. My entree was not bad, although somewhat undercooked, and it was nothing special to crow about. A little overpriced for the quality even discounting the hair episode.

Me and my boyfriend came here for our anniversary as a last minute change in plans and it was a mistake.. first off we got seated in a terrible spot between two doors so the draft for both of us was bad. He got pepsi and I got pink lemonade and both drinks were very watered down. Our waitress wasnt knowledgeable about the dishes and gave us false information. We ordered baked clams and we got six of the tiniest clams Ive ever seen. If she had told us we only get six instead of assuming the order portion was a dozen then we would have ordered something else because we were splitting an appetizer. I got the crab cake stuffed shrimp and it was surprisingly delicious ! He got the frutti de mare and it had so many HUGE chunks of garlic, it was extremely bland and lacked flavor just like everything else. The garlic bread was soaked in oil and leaked through our table cloth leaving a huge oil stain. My boyfriend is Italian so hes a bit of a critic when it comes to the places we eat, especially authentic gourmet Italian food. We will not be coming back here.. EVERR

Wow, the food was delicious, starting with real garlic bread! Plates were full and we gave ourselves two hours to enjoy a meal with appetizers and dessert. Our waitress was super attentive until our meals came out, then it went downhill fast. We had to interrupt her LONG conversation with the table behind ours to get more drinks, and then she never came back to clear our plates for dessert. Unfortunately, for us and her, we just didnt have enough time to enjoy coffee and dessert at the restaurant (we got cannollis to go). This seems to be a big complaint from many patrons. I hope the manager/host of the restaurant puts some effort into improving the service. We also noticed what others have remarked on, that the restaurant is a little worn around the edges. It is, but the food is worthwhile. 3 stars for decor/condition of restaurant, 5 stars for the food, and 3 stars for the waitress.

I went there yesterday just to see a black mouse next to me. When I told the staff they said dont worry it is more afraid of you then you are of it. When i called the manager his response was "so what do you want me to do about it". When i said i was going to call the board of health he said "so". I definitely would never go back. I shouldve listened to my aunt that seen a roach when she was there.

On our "special occasion" visit last year we had fruit flies all over the grated cheese bowl and on the wall next to our table. I still have the photos I took and show them to anyone thinking of going there. Now I see another review here stating the same experience. I am not surprised! We couldnt wait to get out of there! Of course, no extra charge for the fruit flies. NEVER AGAIN.

The food seems to be not as high quality as it used to be. We had a gathering there last week. The food was okay. The service was not that good. There fruit flies all over the place. This to me means there is rotten food. Working in restaurants for 20 years as a chef. I know fruit flies means the kitchen is not clean. To me that is disgusting.

The genuine article. A family business thats been a reliable local favorite for many decades. While others might be more "trendy", few are as dependable, and even fewer offer as much bang for your buck. All of your favorite dishes and famously generous portions awaiting.

Great food as always. Decor a bit old and slightly cramped. Good people and very friendly. The great food makes up for all of the downside. Great old style Italian food and feel.

We come here a lot. The food is always great. Great home cooked Italian food. Reasonably priced for lunch.
