“Yes, I Would Like Coffee with my Milk and Sugar, Thank You” By Eric Odynocki So this is not a book report, but a review of a café I and other members of the Library Club went to the other day after work. Ever since I have come back from Spain, I have had an insistent craving for coffee and to sip it amongst friends in a cozy café. Living out in the middle of suburbia affords only the McDonalds of coffee joints, Starbucks, to enjoy such a social activity. I absolutely despise Starbucks coffee for its horrible taste. I really think their brand should not be even called coffee at all and I am doubtful as to the validity of their coffee beans actually being coffee beans and not some other foul substance which looks like them (I’ll allow your imaginations to conjure up what I insinuate…) Getting back on topic, my search for a good café where I could drink warm beverages like the cappuccinos I enjoyed in Europe have been met with much disappointment. Even the coffee joints in the ritzy town near the university were disillusioning since their drinks did not satisfy my expectations and their stores close too early for my friends and I to hang out there after work or let alone on a Saturday night. I complained of my failed quests to Victor, the Library Club advisor, who then suggested the “Milk and Sugar Café” in Bayshore. The name sounded magical and due to his enthusiasm, I was eager to try this place out. Hence, a Library Club field trip was born. While it is on the complete opposite shore of Long Island in relation to Stony Brook, I would have to say the forty-minute-or-so trip was well worth it. The café was more of a restaurant, but not very big. Though not bohemian, the setting was not snobbishly aristocratic either, being very warm and inviting, with comfortable furniture placed throughout the dining room, though perhaps a bit too formal for my taste. The service was very helpful and immediate, though not rushed like in a diner or other eatery. The cappuccino I had was delicious and exactly what I had been looking for. My companions were also more than satisfied with their teas and coffee that they chose. The variety of beverages is remarkable and not redundantly fancy like in other coffee joints where the combination of flavors and ingredients becomes another language or secret code that only the most frequent of customers can crack (None of this fake corporate jargon: “Yeah, could I get a double frappe-mocha-choco-choco-chai-latte-frizzle…) Though a tad bit on the pricey side, I would recommend the “Milk and Sugar Café” over Starbucks any day. The café’s quality is superbly better and might actually be cheaper. Who can resist that? After a crazy week at work, or a long time of not seeing old friends, or enjoying time with a significant other, the “Milk and Sugar Café” is sure to please you in any circumstance.

I laughed out loud when I read an old review from someone who said the brunch was overpriced at $15. Well, its now $20, and its still the same poor value. Cold bacon. Cold, stale waffles (so cold the butter wouldnt melt). Some bagels, cereal, fruit, and a small omelette station. When I ordered a tea, I got lipton, not a choice of teas, which you usually get at other quaint cafes. I was passed over while waiting online for brunch. Its not self-serve and one guy had to serve the omlettes and the other supposedly "hot" food (which wasnt even warm). I had to ask him if I had to serve myself to get him to notice that he passed me by. Plenty of staff around but for some reason, it took them quite some time to realize they were not staffing the food station right as the line backed up. The place was pretty empty for brunch. It shouldnt have been that difficult. Ive had free buffets at hotels that were far better food wise. Decor is very quaint. I wont be back unless the value improves with quality of food and consistency of service. The quality of food for the brunch is sadly laughable for $20. If youre looking for Sunday brunch, you can find far better elsewhere on LI.

Good food, pistachio crusted chicken, skirt steak and roast chicken are favorite meals along with lemon coconut cake for dessert. Portions are generous and Ive never left without bringing home leftovers. If they have roasted brussel sprouts on menu as special, order it, theyre delicious and should be a regular item on menu. However, while the quality of their entrees seem high they serve a margarine spread with the bread. Really gross. Have no idea why butter isnt served, it leads me to question the ingredients in their food. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with couches and comfortable looking chairs but the chair cushions need to be re-stuffed as theyre as hard as boards and the heights are off compared to tables to eat comfortably. All in all an enjoyable meal, with slight improvements would have rated it higher.

I just hosted my daughters baby shower this weekend at Milk & Sugars "Victorian Room." It was an amazing day for all, especially my daughter. With the attentive, accommodating, courteous, & friendly staff, the service was impeccable. Many guests commented not only on the staff but on the room itself and its lovely (&different) decor. Comfortable, cozy, yet roomy. Not the usual restaurant or catering hall. The Food was just amazing from the appetizers, to the brunch, to the cake & desserts. Everyone commented. So many said, they couldnt stop eating. The choices, the home cooking, again, amazing! Just Delicious! And we had so much to bring home as well. Yay! Thanks to Lenny & his staff, my daughters little boys baby shower was even more special.

Went in for 2 caps. Decided to get a sandwich. Was told there was a share fee.we decided to just get the coffees. Waitress went to see if she could wave it (we didnt ask her to) she said she could not so again we stuck with the coffes. The manager decided to have a conversation about how he didnt give a damn about how mad we seemed or if we were upset they didnt need our business.( we are the only customers there and we werent upset) so we left. Didnt try the food cause the wait staff were so nasty ( even the "nice" waitress was chiming in on how she wasnt losing her job over it. (No one asked!!!) They didnt even try to hide their convo. Like they were dying for us to leave. Would give less if I didnt have to give a star to leave a review. Shame.

I knew the original owners and they would be very disheartened to know that the new owner is extremely rude and very short with patrons whenever there is a matter of question or dissatisfaction. The prices on a whole I find to be rather exorbitant for what is served and the portion sizes provided. The dine-in coffee cups have definitely gotten smaller in size but inflated in price. The atmosphere is a hodgepodge of estate sale furniture promoting grandeur with a pop of eccentricity. I do keep going back once every year hoping the establishment changed hands.

Me and my two friends went there for dessert. We were a little thrown off by couches and the lighting was unsettling, but I would definitely go back. I ordered a chocolate chip sundae and it was delicious! Dont think my friends were overly pleased by their dishes, but thats what they get for not sticking to their ways. Anyway, the service was great and not too long of a wait for our orders. It was very cozy yet proper, I cant wait to try the brownie sundae next visit!
