Box Hill Pizzeria looks like a typical pizzeria, but upon walking in you see its packed with customers. Sure, theres a takeout counter on one side and a separate dining room on the other side. Like many pizzerias, if you want a drink refill, you take you cup up to the machine and refill it. Whats not typical about this pizzeria is that I dont think anyone goes there for the pizza. Their specialty is crab cakes. In eastern Maryland, a crab cake place isnt especially uncommon, but Ive yet to find one that has crab cakes as good as Box Hill. They give you a good sized portion served either baked or fried with almost no filler and huge pieces of lump crabmeat. They also have uncooked crab cakes available for takeout along with instructions to cook them at home and will even ship frozen ones. To put into perspective how good their crab cakes are, I live 90 minutes away and Ive done the 3 hour round trip to get them. Im sure their other menu items that are more typical for a pizza place are good too, but Ive never tried them. I heard about the crab cakes, tried them and havent looked at the rest of the menu since!

This place is popular! We were there on a Friday night and it was hopping. The staff was completely on top of it though. From the quick order counter, to the dinning room, the staff here were fast and friendly. The restaurant is also well kept up for that type of traffic, and I think this shows that the employees and owners love the place. The reason for three stars is the food. Crab cake is good, but it isnt knock the door down amazing. The fish and shrimp that came with it were terrible. The shrimp were way over done rubber balls, and the fish tasted like it went directly from the freezer to the pan. The half pound Special of the night burger was a flattened, unseasoned, McDs qtr pounder w/cheese look-a-like but twice as round. It tasted like a cheese burger sub sandwich, which is a bad thing. We didnt try the pizza and I think that was a mistake, because it looks really good. Next time we go we will try some pizza. Staff and atmosphere here are great. Problem was the food didnt really do it for us.

Its like stepping back into the 80s. The atmosphere has just enough kitsch to evoke nostalgia, but it doesnt seem like its trying to be anything its not. The food is top notch. This place and another restaurant called Pappas have a rivalry here in Maryland as to who can make the best crab cake. Ive had both, and I believe they stand as equals. But whereas Pappas is a dining room where you have to make reservations, Box Hill Pizzeria is a neighborhood joint you could imagine a kid stopping in after biking over from the comic book shop. I daresay the comfy, 1980s chain restaurant feel of Box Hill Pizzeria belies the five star quality of their food. Restaurants like this are rare nowadays, and the quality of the food alone merits the enjoyment of this atmospheric dining experience.

I go to Box Hill every time I have to travel to Aberdeen Proving Grounds for work. The Crab Cakes make the trip cross country from San Diego worthwhile. When I walk in and the aroma of fresh baked pizza surrounds me it takes me back to when I worked at a pizza joint in high school and I always think I will try the pizza. If it tastes half as good as it smells, it is going to be great. Then I look at the menu and I cant resist the Crab Cakes the size of softballs and I am never disappointed in the lumps of crab meat and the delicate flavor. One of these days I will try the pizza.......... if they stop serving the Crab Cakes or run out that day. My next trip is scheduled for September, 2017 and Box Hill Pizzeria is on my list of "must go" when get there.

I am 31 yrs old and literally grew up walking here to eat....back when they only had a few booths ;) We love the guys at Box Hill. Pizza is great with a unique "new england" crust. You either like it or you dont. Crab cakes are amazing...moist with huge lumps of meat. Get them broiled. I love love love the spinach pie & the platter which includes a Greek salad & garlic bread is an amazing deal. Their greek dressing is the best dressing Ive ever had...& I usually only eat ranch, Blue cheese, etc. My only issue is with their cheesesteaks which kills me because I grew up eating their cheesesteak subs & they uses to be THE BEST in town until about 10+years ago. Something happened and now they are very dry with not much meat. But we still love the place☺

First time there.Guess Im in the minority but i wasnt crazy about this place. Crab cakes just seemed eggy and so-so. They were a nice good size, I will give them that. I was also kinda turned off that i was paying a good price for the platter and was served at my table with a paper plate and white plastic utensils??????. Top that off with having to go to a soda machine to get my own paper cup drink and I am fully turned off. Sorry ... I know it is a pizzeria kind of place but when you are charging me restaurant prices and then having me add a 20% gratuity Im expecting more then paper goods and getting my own drinks. I will give them kudos for some good fries.

This crabcake, if you had known it from birth, would have seemed anextraordinary. And yet now my mouth is slack with incredulity at the wonder of its creation. And yet behold the adulterate seafood, in the declining years of blesséd harvest from the very belly of mother ocean, and weep, weep for what your children will not taste but through the façade of impossible wealth and privilege and know that you are the last generation and the last for whom history shall not be a nightmare. You shall not have to yet awaken.

AWESOME!! After living in Maryland for over 20 years (specifically Jopppatowne/Eddgewood), a co-worker asked me to recommend where she can order "real" Maryland crab cakes for her husbands birthday. I now live in GA. I suggested Box Hill because my husband visited the area (Bel Air) on business. His customer took him in there to eat pizza. To his surprise they had crab cakes on the menu. After eating a couple, he purchased more and asked them to pack them up to bring home!

I am originally from Bel Air, MD, so I know my crab cakes. Every time I drive from NYC to the DC area, I cant resist jumping quickly off US95 and stopping at Box Hill to buy the best crab cakes on the East Coast. For take out they come uncooked, in styrofoam cups. They go into the freezer at home until I want them. That is usually a dinner for special friends. No better way to impress people or give them a special thank-you. The cakes never fail to wow my guests.

Love the crab cakes... and the cheesesteaks are pretty darn good too! I did not live to far away for many of my years in Churchville/Bel Air MD area. Ate there a lot in the late eighties till mid 2000s. I was so happy to discover they deliver crab cakes after I moved to NC. Not exactly cheap to get cakes overnighted but honestly, probably worth more than the charge. Try them you will not be disappointed!
