This restaurant is very unassuming on the outside and not much to look at. I did not expect much when my mother and sister invited me here for lunch on a recent Sunday. But as soon as I walked in through the door, I knew I was in for a treat. It was the aroma and the sight of the food: authentic. It was also another observation: every customer that noon -- aside from members of my party -- was Asian. As Brad Hellers review points out: this is not your typical Americanized Chinese take-out. This is the real deal. The best Szechuan style Chinese Ive had in New Jersey and its been hiding nearby for all this time! Lets just get this out of the way: the decor is very sub-par. The seats are old. The cushions are worn. The outside looks...cheap. But if you can look past the visuals, you will be in for a treat of fantastic, spicy, authentic Szechuan style cuisine. The older reviews seem to indicate that there was a change the kitchen that lead to a downgrade. But the current rotation seems to be back to a crew of very skilled chefs in the kitchen. Everything we ordered was delicious and delectable. Every dish that came out was fresh and cooked to order. And while some of the food looked oily and greasy, we all commented afterwards that none of us felt "heavy" after gorging ourselves. I would not recommend this place for those that like their Americanized Chinese food. I would not recommend this place for those that cant look past the atmosphere. I would not recommend this place if you dont like authentic, *spicy*, Szechuan style Chinese food. However, I would recommend this place to anyone that wants to appreciate a truly authentic offering of Szechuan style cuisine hidden in a tiny nook in an unassuming building in Hamilton, NJ (or all places!). Serious foodies will absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place.

I have had some chances to have pretty serious authentic Chinese food, although within the blanket term Chinese food there are many varieties, but this place has very good Sichuan / Szechuan food for this area. Maybe its not quite a Chinatown restaurant. Its on the edge of Trenton, so its not 100% fancy. It looks small from the street, although it is quite nice inside, nice lighting. But for Jersey outside of Edison and Jersey City, its pretty legit food. Do know that Szechuan food is spicy by definition. But its really good. Try dandan mian noodles, the crispy chicken is reeeallly good and really spicy, mapo doufu tofu dish, all really good stuff. Stick to the Szechuan food here, dont look on the menu for typical Chinese takeout dishes which I cant vouch for here because we come to Szechuan House for Szechuan food. If you can take the heat, its the best Chinese food in the area. I and a group of friends often go here, were usually a big group and we order family style and share the dishes which is much better. The waiters are quite nice to us, they remember us when we come in. It has been a little quiet last couple times we have gone here, so I hope they dont close... Seriously this is one of the best good Chinese food places around here, so go try it out and support local businesses and try the best spicy Chinese food youve probably ever had!

After reading the reviews and seeing it was mostly positive, I decided to give this place a try. The food is expensive and tasted horrible. I normally do not rated placed but this experience was so bad I feel like i had to write this. The crispy chicken was dry and extremely spicy after I requested it not be too spicy. I love spicy food but the other people eating with me do not so thats why I asked for it to be only a little spicy. The shrimp lo mein smelled like it had gone bad, the shrimp fried rice had no flavor and the scallops with vegetable was extremely over cooked. Unfortunately, nothing I ordered was good and it was a waste of $60.

Authentic chinese food. Kidney Szechwan sauce and Double Bacon Szechwan sauce just a must. Last visit was lil disappointed. Group of 5, around 3pm having late lunch; rest empty we were rushed with the soup and really how can u eat super hot soup fast (Seafood HOT AND Sour Soup, really good). Appetizers brought out, still eating soup, they took away the chop sticks, req them to be brought back, then main dishes all 6 out. Full table of plates, soup bowls, appetizers..... Server lil annoyed when I asked for Fried noodles and fresh Suck sauce for desert. Food still GOOD.

This place deserves an updated review, I have been going there for about a year now, and I must say the service is wonderful. My glass of water gets topped off before its empty, and the food is wonderful. Its as close to Authentic Chinese food as you can get in this area, and they serve some real exotic stuff. This is not your American Chinese take out joint on the corner, I take my family here monthly and we all love it. This is a good place to go if you want to adventure into a more cultural cuisine, you wont be disappointed

This place is just wonderful. Never thought I could find this kind of food quality around here. This place is truly unique. And believe me, Ive seen a lot, I travelled through the world, and work in NYC for a long time, and Im constantly on search for good places where I can take people to enjoy some food. This is tremendously outstanding place. Wont even try and make any suggestions, everything on the menu is no mistake on your order. Service: Attentive, friendly, and caring, and going beyound whats formally required.

The food is very good!! Some of the hot dishes would make you numb. Some of the flavors would make you feel like eating more and more. The spices and flavors are authentic Chinese. The cold appetizers are awesome. Only drawback they dont take American Express (???)Take a visa card with you and a lot of appetite. And yes ... some of the waiters dont speak very good English but nevertheless the service is courteous. Portions are quite large, and leftovers taste even better the next day.

Definitely good food, although not top class. Some dishes are not freshly prepared, but pre-cooked. They have a big parking lot. The dining rooms are spacial too. They could serve groups and event in a somewhat separate area, although not a private room. The service varies. The place was originally nicely decorated, but gets dirty and a little fallen apart over time. The bathroom also looks dirty. It could be a romantic or fancy Chinese restaurant if properly renovated and managed.

If youve had trouble finding authentic Chinese food in the area, look no further. This place is legit. Ma Po Tofu is amazing. Also try the sour fish and cabbage stew (definitely not the right name but thats how I remember it), and the spicy chicken. Staff is very friendly and make great recommendations if you dont know what you want but can tell them what youre into. Ive made this place a regular spot for a social group in the area that I organize social events for. Love it!

I went with my family to Szechuan House restaurant in this weekend. We ordered a lot of foods. The plates are clean, and the restroom is fixed with fresh flowers. The differerence is the same chef under the new managerment. That means totally different. there is amazing service and the best spicy dishes in NJ. My family will never forget. I would recommend people who like spicy foods should try this restaurant with your friends or family.
