Chef Michael Corvino creates multi-textured, complex tastes that seem inspired by the fertile farmland, fields of wheat grain, desert sage, and lush vineyards of his home territory...the Walla Walla Valley of the Columbia River. A three course dinner starts with an amuse-bouche that arouses the palate before the first course; seed, grain, and sunchoke blanketed in the rich yellow yolk of a poached egg. Crisp-edged, roasted brussel sprout meld with the softness of a smoked potato, and tucked in are plump, perfect mussels. The Steelhead trout is prepared so seductively you linger over it, as your endorphins release. The sauce is bread-worthy and you mop it up. Dessert is an artful tonal palette of vanilla and white chocolate tinged with citrus fruit from yuzu and bitter orange. The waitstaff are perfectly synchronized to deliver at the right moment, articulate in describing the various selections. Every detail compliments the presentation of the food; the lovely, rustic china, the glasses for the well-paired wines, the small vase of bittersweet. Wafting down from the upstairs lounge, are strains of jazz from Kansas City’s most talented jazz musicians. The stunning dining room with its broad windows overlooking Crown Center, the warmth of the wood, the brass touches, and the imaginative wood-vaulted ceiling from the architect of Windows of the World, is still as elegant and comfortable as it was at The American’s opening in 1974.

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was truly an experience well never forget. When he had made the reservations originally, we were only vegetarian. We got our menus (that said, "Happy Birthday Lexi!") and we realized the menus werent vegan. - oh no. were not going to be able to eat. After a manager rushing to our table to discuss with us, and communicate between us and the chef, the chef offered to make us a completely vegan dinner.. including the last, desert. Thank you God. So, we put our menus behind us and trust this chef. And Im so glad we did. In all of my life, I have never eaten better food. I dont think I could put words into how wonderful and delicate and tasteful everything was. My boyfriend and I dont go out to eat at nice places very often, we love going out, but in more relaxed atmospheres, so, at first, we were nervous. If thats you, wanting to try for a special event, and are scared to try, DO IT! Service was on point. Lastly, on our way out, our car was pulled up and waiting for us by the valet. Truly wonderful.

My wife and I had visited the American for our tenth anniversary. The service could not have been any better from the time we had walked in the doors up until the time we left. All of our questions had answers; no, "I dont know, let me check." The view of the city was beautiful, as well. All drinks paired with each course were perfect. My wife and Is food was both better than expected. She order the sea food, I the steak. Our only one issue was taken care of immediately once we had brought it to our waiters attention. No complaints, cant wait to return!

Excellent. Ive enjoyed this place since the 80s... an all time favorite when we lived there, EXCEPT--my husband always leaves still hungry (actually starving)--but I insist he just order two meals. He does so, but then the bill is extremely high. So much for "less is more" Ha!! Not a good thing right now in this poor economy--but I do plan to go again when in KC next.I like it! And for Kansas City, its about as good as it gets. Seriously! I cant think of any place better---Plaza III is nice, too, but a whole different ballgame, too.

The atmosphere was impressive and classic, and service impeccible, if not pretentious. The food had fantastic flavors. We were impressed from the amuse bouche to the bite site treats at the end. Portions however were tiny, even by gourmet restaurant standards - not so much the protein but the side dishes. 3 courses were not enough. The restaurant is a bit hard to find, especially parking in the Crown Center garage. Overall, however, excellent.

My wife and I had the pleasure of spending last Saturday evening dining at the American Restaurant. This was perhaps our tenth time there. We had the tasting menu with the wine tasting and can honestly say it was the best food we have ever had there. Chef Corvino outdid himself. From the first appetizer to the last sip of wine everything was perfect. The service was also excellent . This was on May 30th and we cant wait to get back.

Some dishes were good but we did not care for some at all. Service nothing more than average. The decor really need some work .Seriously. The best is view, one of the best in the city. Suggested attire is ties but dont believe it. Some people were wearing jeans To recapitalize whole dinning experience: the restaurant does not have atmosphere at all. It looks like more a management problem.

Like other reviewers have said, the food in taste wasnt mind blowing like I was expecting for the price. The view was great, but the waitstaff could have been more uniform. If everyone served the same way it would be one thing. Only one server was 5 star elegant and eloquent. The others were 3 star at best. Otherwise, excellent service, and a great place to take your bougie friends. :)

A very enjoyable night out, and an all-around very solid high-end dining experience. I wouldnt say I was blown away with the food, to be honest. It was very good, dont get me wrong, but not mind-blowing, as I was expecting from the reputation and cost. Great service, very nice atmosphere, enjoyable evening, good food. Worth it now and then.

An elegant dining experience. The food was superb and service was impeccable. The chicken liver mousse was delicious and the scallops delicately seared they just melt in your mouth! Hefty tab at the end of the night but thats what you get for some of the best culinary art.

Took my wife to the American Restaurant for her birthday on 2/15/13. The dining experience could not have been better. The food was excellent, the view of the city was magnificent and the staff was knowledgeable and cordial. It is expensive but well worth it!

We have our annual dinner here every year and the service and staff are always excellent. Our committee was very impressed with the variety of ideas that the marketing reps introduced to our group and the evening was a big success again this year.
