Walnut Hills Restaurant has the best food in Vicksburg. I have travelled through Vicksburg for years and plan my stops there to enjoy the wonderful food and ambience of the beautiful Victorian venue. On occasion I have tried other recommended restaurants there but none compare. Lunch is served either at a round table (lazy-susan) or individual tables. All dishes are available on the roundtable, where I eat when i am really hungry. If I have an opportuniy to be there for dinner, the ala carte menu has excellent steaks, seafood and local dishes. Often the chef has specials which are marvelous. I am particularly fond of wines and Walnut Hills has a quite good selection available. I have gotten to know "Miss Joyce," the owner for at least the last fifteen years that I have been going there One of the reasons I submitted the review was because I clicked on the couple of "bad" reviews the restaurant has received. I do not think the reviewers had been there. No dish is served at the restaurant that hasnt been prepared from individual recipes. Nothing is served from a can as one reviewer mentioned. One mentioned "poor service." I can imagine, perhaps, an occasional infraction of good manners, but I am sure it must have been a rare exception. The atmosphere is jovial and many of the guests seem to know one another. Its really worth a visit. By the way there is no better fried chicken in the world.

I drove 3.5 hours away to have a dinner at this place. With a closing time of 9 pm, I got there just before 8 pm. Excited to try the place out, I walk up and see people eating inside. Boy is my excitement peaking at this point. I walk up to the entrance, and the door is locked. Weird. I walk towards the back entrance, and I see two workers walk into the restaurant. Awesome, maybe this is the actual entrance. I try walking in 10 seconds behind them.. door is locked. Wait, what. So I call at 8:05, asking if the restaurant is open. The worker stutters and says hold on one second. The manager gets on and speaks. I ask when they are open, and she said no theyre closed, and the cook started shutting things down. I then say that Im waiting outside and drove 3.5 hours to visit, seeing the parking lot filled with cars, and people eating inside. Rudely, she said "Yeah, were sorry". What a warm welcome Ive had to Mississippi. Im hoping the rest of the state isnt filled with unwelcoming self-interested businesses like this one. If your website says that the closing time is 9 pm, isnt it a bit ridiculous to lock the doors of your restaurant starting at 8:05 pm? Never had I encountered a business that preferentially locks its doors to certain people. This was a first.

This was truly one of the most below mediocre meals Ive ever eaten. For close to $25 a plate I should have been more than satisfied with my meal, if not blown away. The grits were swimming in water, the catfish was fishy and the pasta that my catfish was served over was bland to say the least. You almost had to dig through the pasta to find the crawfish that it was supposed to be served with. Plus the crawfish, at the height of the season, were bitter and small. I think the reason I was so upset is because for two people to eat and have desert we had a bill of close to $90. I came here years ago and the food was fine. Perhaps the owner is not doing a Thorough or regular quality control check on the meals. If you want good southern cooking look elsewhere. However, on a side note, the cakes were very good. They were quite cold but I cannot complain about the temp of a product when it is the end of the day and I realize they need to be fresh. I would come back for the cakes but most likely never return for a full meal.

We wanted an authentic Southern cuisine while on vacation and chose Walnut Hills based on reputation and location. We came to the early dinner seating just before 5 pm and were the only ones in the restaurant. I think our waitress was good without being overly attentive. My entree was the fried chicken which was excellent. My wife had the pork tenderloin in cranberry pecan sauce with sauteed spinach. While the sauce was flavorful, it definitely overpowered the tenderloin mainly because of the volume of sauce used. The spinach was not separate but mixed in with the sauce. That was disappointing. My son had the seafood pasta which he said was good. The sides of mashed sweet potato and asparagus was very good. The drinks were reasonably priced. The final bill for three, though, was in my opinion, a bit high for what we received.

We wanted to try so traditional southern food while passing through Mississippi and we were not disappointed. We got the corn & crab bisque which was so creamy and had chunks of crab in it. We also go the seafood gumbo epinette with garlic bitter toast. It was very flavourful and clean. For our main meal my husband had the fried chicken. Man loves his fried chicken. It was lightly battered and wasnt too oily. This was pure juiciness. It had a buttery flavour too it. I had the Mardi Gras Seafood Grits. It was seasoned very well with a little kick of spice. It came with shrimp on top which were delicious! It was very filling but an excellent choice.

All the food I had was great...chicken gumbo, fried chicken, grits, green beans. I was really hungry and it was all so good. So why not 5 stars? Its those things that stand out. I said everything was great, except for the pecan pie. I believe pecan pie should NOT be served cold on a cold plate. That screams that it has been sitting around somewhere. And ice water should not taste like it comes from Flint Michigan. Most places have decent tasting water. Not here. And I ordered 2 beers (reasonable priced at $3.50 ea). And it should not take 15 mins to get a cup of gumbo, if it is not a packed house. All in all, its good.

My husband took me here for a Valentines dinner on our way to Natchez. He thought it was going to be a great place because it had great ratings and a USA today rating and was on some list of places to go before you die. Lets just say I died a little bit being there. There was a band there that was really loud. Our waiter was able to disappear in the little house. The food had no seasoning whatsoever. I ordered the ribeye and it tasted like a pot roast. No steak seasoning or anything. My husband ordered pork ribs and they were very dry. Lets just say it was not worth the 60 dollars we had to pay.

Went there for lunch. Had the Blue Plate Special- Fried Chicken, Yam Pone and Purple Hull Peas. Food was great but not large portions. The Atmosphere was laid back but rather crowded. Value was fine. Service was terrible. The waiter was rude. He nearly hit me with his notepad as he was taking orders. He gave us our food, told us he was bringing bread... and we were finished with the food before he brought the bread out. After giving us our drinks, we didnt get any refills until we had finished eating and had to flag him down from across the room. Never checked on us at all.
