Let me say that I have eaten at this El Azteca many, many times. I have had superb meals here, as well as excellent service. I have also seen them at their worst. Have had a few meals where the food tasted as though it had been frozen and merely heated up. Have also had slow service. HOWEVER, this is not their norm. What I can tell you is that my experiences at El Azteca are mostly positive and I am very happy that they came to my neighborhood. Finally, we have a decent Tex-Mex restaurant in the burbs. This is also the first restaurant in its location which has been anything resembling a success, so that must tell you something about the food. Not all of their servers are fluent in English, so some may have problems with drink orders, but they have always made it right whenever they have messed up one of my orders at the bar. Dont be "Minnesota nice" and say nothing if there is a problem. Let them know so they can fix it. They have had the same manager for several years and I can tell you that he cares about the product and service as if he were an owner. As far as the people who went there on Cinco, I say, wake up! I sure as hell wouldnt try out an Irish restaurant on St. Pattys day, and I certainly wouldnt expect to get good service then either.

First of all, let me preface this by saying I grew up with Southern California Mexican restaurants, which really know how to make good food. With that being said, I know itll be difficult to find a restaurant in Minnesota to live up to my experiences. El Azteca failed. I got there, and I wanted to order a blended margarita with Patron. My only option for blended was the premade option stirring in an icee machine. If I wanted Patron, it had to be on the rocks and flavored...strike 1. I decided to order a simple meal, two beef tacos with rice & beans. I waited an exorbitant amount of time waiting for someone to actually take my order...strike 2. When my food came, it didnt even look that good. The flavor and appearance were compatible. The taco shells were probably from the local Cub Foods, nothing "authentic" about them. The beef was too sweet in the tacos, and the rice was bland at best...strike 3. I get it, Im in Minnesota, not California, and maybe Im just not gonna find a really good Mexican restaurant in the frozen north. Youre not foolin me though, when you say you have "fresh authentic Mexican food". There didnt seem to be anything fresh about it, and there definitely wasnt anything authentic about it. Oh well, onto the next I suppose.

I ordered a Burrito Loco which has steak, chicken, chorizo, shrimp with rice and beans inside topped with melted cheese (and some mild red sauce that was not listed in the description). The burrito was HUGE and the only thing on the plate. The flavors were fine but I was expecting spicy chorizo but it was very very mild and parts of it were char-burnt and the steak was very tough and chewy. I had asked them to sub the pico de gallo for tomato and didnt get any tomato. My dining partner also asked for the guac and nacho sauce to be on the side of her burrito and got the guac on the side but no nacho was given at all. Server was nice and prompt. I am thinking the mistakes were due to language barriers. The chips are a nice thick chip, the salsa was mild and the white sauce was thick and creamy. Delicious. I would have given four stars if the steak wasnt so incredibly tough to chew and there was less char on the underspiced chorizo. A little fresh side of lettuce, tomato, and sour cream would also have been nice. I would go there again but verify they understand any change requests.

Worst service EVER We had 4 adults and 5 kids with us under the age of 7, when we walked in the host said he only had 1 kids menu and he would need it back, we said "oh thats fine" but then he never gave it to us to look at. It took 15 minutes before we were greeted by our waiter. We ordered water, one soda and two margaritas (that had almost no alcohol in them), he forgot to bring my soda to the table and I had to ask him for it 3 times. We were never offered refills on chips or beverages. It took 50 minutes between ordering and receiving our food. At about 45 minutes my husband asked to speak to a manager, when he came to the table and my husband said "do you know what is taking so long for our food, weve been waiting 45 minutes" his response was "this is not McDonalds, we do the best we can, Ill buy you a round of drinks" to which I responded "we dont want drinks, we have a table of hungry kids we arent really drinking much" he said "I see, I will give you a discount" WHICH HE DIDNT DO. I have NEVER been treated so poorly at a restaurant before and I will NEVER return.

Horrible service. Waited forever for our very rude waitress to fetch a clean mug from the kitchen to serve my husband. I had finished my margarita by the time she showed up with his drink. I guess that was quite exhausting for her because she looked very angry and then never returned again to ask if we needed anything. Good thing we werent hungry as this place is disorganized and slow. We did not eat anything other than the chips (which tasted bland/stale) and salsa given to us by a bus boy. We will not go back due to this servers attitude. There are PLENTY of Mexican restaurants nearby that have far better margaritas, nicer atmosphere and friendlier staff. Keep driving...

Absolutely inedible food due to salt content. We ordered two different lunch specials and the jalapeno poppers. The poppers came without sauce and were watery inside---clearly frozen and reheated. They were impossible to chew. The restaurant comped the price of the appetizer without our asking, which was nice. Our lunch specials were flavorless (unless you consider SALT a flavor). The waitress couldnt understand us and had to get a second waitress to ask why we didnt want a box for our food as we ate very little. They never refilled our water glasses. Will never return here--paid $20 for about five bites of food and a glass of water.

It probably wont kill you, but I see little other reason to go here, unless your idea of Mexican food is exceedingly bland. I never knew one could make a beef taco with no cumin, nor an enchilada without onions. The cheese they use, seemingly on everything, was reminiscent of Velveeta, but with less flavor. It tasted like everything was just Now, I grew up in Texas, so my tastes were formed there - but, even forgetting the lack of heat, the lack of flavor in almost everything was amazing. Well not be back.

I dont know of any amazing Mexican restaurants outside of Southern California or Mexico. El Azteca is good... not amazing, simply good. Their chips could be better but, other than that, I havent had a bad item from the menu in the 10+ times Ive visited this establishment, and I always order something new. The environment is nice for a Mexican joint, as it does not smell like cleaning solution and they have a fireplace. I recommend the Chiles Verdes and/or the Combo Fajitas.
