I am part Asian and eat at Chinese restaurants all the time, and this is honestly the first time I have EVER had such bad customer service and bad attitude from a Chinese restaurant as my family and I did on Nov 11th! We were passing through Traverse city and decided to have dinner before continuing on, and the Hunan looked cozy enough and was not too crowded. The menu specified that the sweet/sour chicken was deep friend, but did not for the sweet/sour pork. We happily ordered the pork because though it is more commonly served in a deep fried batter like the chicken, we favorite style is the pork strips cooked in the sauce. Since the menu did not specify the pork was deep fried as it did with the chicken, we thought the pork would be our favorite style, and due to a gluten free diet in the family we can not have any deep fried batter. As soon as the dish was brought to us we realized we could not have it, and I had to flag down the teen waitress to come back. I apologized and pointed out that we could not have the sweet/sour pork due to the deep fried batter and asked that we exchange the dish. This is where it goes bad, because that teen waitress got very defensive, looking at me like I was crazy and saying "We dont make exchanges, you ordered that food and we made it for you". I point out that yes we had ordered it but in error due to their menu not being clear to us, and she takes off and comes right back with a menu, thumbing through it as if she is going to show us wrong, but then she sees what I am talking about and so she looks at me and says that they cant specify everything in the menu and that sweet/sour pork is served deep fried all the time any way. I tell her that yes it is more commonly known to be served in a deep fried batter but we are aware of other styles and servings or we wouldnt have asked. She then strongly suggests that I just box it and take it home and she can bring another dish. Taken aback by the attitude I said okay, and a few moments after boxing it I asked another waitress, an older female, to bring us the manager. Within seconds the teen snippy waitress was back at our table wanting to know what the problem was, and then she exchanges a few words in Chinese with a subject who came out of the kitchen who I guess was the manager/owner and HE was gesturing angrily and demanding to know "what the problem is" and that we had already ate the food. I point out that we ate what we could, but that the deep fried pork was untouched, I went over our reasons again, and HE also said that we had ordered it and that it was made and that was that. 3 of them stood over us at the booth gesturing and commenting, and creating a scene. I asked him if that was what he was trying to tell me, that he was going to make me pay for something I tried to correct and change from the very beginning, and after a few moments and he looking around and realizing everyone was looking at HIM and his staff he said I didnt have to pay for the pork but "you have to pay for your dinner"... which I was now also very reluctant to do in the first place... Now that aside, the food was not all that good either, being rather bland and flavorless. I had to give back my hot/sour soup because it really had no flavor other than the broth flavor. The teen waitress seemed to have an attitude about that but I ignored it, should have been my warning to what was coming. Again, this is the very first time I have experienced such poor customer service and attitude, because even at other Chinese places where the food is not that great you usually cant say anything bad about the customer service or attitude!

As for the people saying that this resturaunt is "disgusting, horrible, gross, and rude", Im glad you will never come back. This is literally the only REAL chinese resturaunts in TC where they surve traditional Chinese food. (excluding Panda North) The service is very nice and I love getting my check early in the meal because then I dont have to sit around and wait when I want to leave. Someone also wrote here saying that their sushi looked packaged. When in fact, their sushi is made at their bar area by the owner himself everyday. I have seen him make it many times. Everything is fresh and always hot and ready to eat. There is no resturaunt in TC that I would recommend more then Hunans. Their staff is very kind and greets you at the door with a smile. They sit you down where there is room but if where they place you is not to your liking you may inquire about a diffrent one. They always clear your plates and fill your drinks so your ready to head back to the buffet.

At first when entering this establishment, the host is very excited for you to come in. However, this excitement continues thru to the waitress and throughout the entire time you are eating - its very uncomfortable. Additionally, pushing the check at you with their free fortune cookies while you still are eating is very rude. It seems more like a fast food McDonalds than a sit restaurant. As for the food, I have gone to this place a few times now, giving it another chance because maybe my timing was wrong , however, that statement would be extremely untrue. There was someones chewed up gum in one of the desserts the entire time I was there!!! I even went back before I left to see if any of the staff had corrected this disgusting issue, and surprise!!! most of the buffet had fresh food except that one with the turquoise gum in plain sight... I absolutely do not recommend wasting your time or money here, its just not worth it.

Ok, I had to make a delivery, here in Traverse City, so I stopped by here late in the evening around 9pm. I ordered a dish called Neptunes Blessing, which Ive never seen on a Chinese takeout menu. It was $15.95, so I sort of thought I probably overpaid. When I went to eat this, I was in awe. It is the best Chinese food dish Ive probably ever eaten. It had a lobster tail, scallops, shrimp, and crab meat, with broccoli, celery, mushrooms, carrots, and baby corn, served with white rice. The people inside were nice. They have a buffet, but it was $10.99, although it looked pretty big. I just dont like the blandness of buffets, so I sort of quit with them for the most part. The menu didnt describe the dishes, but the waitress did. Ill go back.

Been going here since Ive been 10 years old and I am 20 now. All the staff is amazing and a lot of them are relatives. They are genuinely from the other side of the world and have flown their relatives to the US to start the american dream, so if you have trouble getting to know them or having conversation it is because of the language barrier not because they arent amazing people. They have amazing service and every employee works hard, this is why they have been open for so long. I cannot name a better buffet in town. Hunans is a family establishment from what I know and also a family friendly place to enjoy a great meal. I can always count on them.
