Outstanding!!! On a whim, I stopped by on a recent Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised. This place reminded me of the Texas BBQ shacks that my family stopped at when we visited family in the Valley. I actually thought Mary may have worked at one of them; what an awesome lady! Woodpile, didnt appear to be the Hipster locale, its layout was easy and very comfortable. Once you placed your order, you walked out and was greeted by Mary and your choice of Bourbon, Beer or a cocktail. There was ample seating and also a few picnic tables that were not under the awning. As for the food, the folks in the City will be very impressed when the Team from Clawson, makes its way Downtown to set up shop. We ordered a sampler plate and as late as it was the food was fresh, tender and very moist. The brisket that came out was tender soft and succulent, just as was the pulled pork. The rib meat fell off the bone and had just the right amount of spices. Sausage and chicken was also very good. You cant go wrong with any of the meats, but the brisket is definitely something to come back for. The sides we had consisted of macaroni and cheese, cornbread and coleslaw. I suspect, they have folks come in just for the sides; theyre that good. Finally at the recommendation of Mary, we topped it off with some bread pudding and bourbon pecan pie ice cream. The folks at Woodpile have something Great going on! I cant wait to visit with Bubba and the Team when the get downtown. In the meantime, Ill venture up to 14 mile to enjoy BBQ, like its supposed be made. P.S.: while I did taste the sauce they have and was fond of the spicy hot; the way the meat is made, sauce is not required!

I love the atmosphere, and I love how quick it was to get the food, it took 5 minutes!! The staff is very friendly as well. What I got is the $15 for 2 meats and 2 sides, the price isnt bad overall. This is a great "fast casual" BBQ restaurant. You go in, take your order, and you eat outside, you serve yourself water and there is a bar outside. There is no inside place to eat, basically you order your food inside, pay for your food and eat outside, or you can get the food to go. Woodpile also have desserts, mainly ice cream and shakes (their ice cream is amazing, get the Cookie Monster one). There is also a bar, the bar is outside as well. The con of this place (beside the fact there isnt an inside place to eat at) is the lack of BBQ sauces. This restaurant has only two BBQ sauces. These choices are sweet and "spicy." I put spicy in quotes because the spicy BBQ sauce was barely spicy, there is even barely a small kick. You also had Honey Mustard and I forget the other option. When I go to a barbecue restaurant I usually want a variety of barbecue sauces. So what is my final verdict? I would definitely come here again. Although if you want a sit down setting (like a traditional restaurant) then go to Lockharts in Downtown Royal Oak, or some other barbecue restaurant (like Famous Daves, Bad Brads BBQ, etc).

With everything being a la carte, its just too expensive for such a lackluster experience. My group arrived at 5 pm and crowded into the tiny counter area to order, retrieved barely cool drinks from the cooler, ordered, and paid the grumpy cashier. They were out of burnt ends and mashed sweet potatoes. The 8 oz of brisket was $10, the 1/2 cup of beans and 1/2 cup of cole slaw were $1.50 each, and we paid $6 for a bottle of water and bottle of Coke. The brisket and Shack sauce were good, the beans were tasty but excessively spicy and a wee bit slimy in parts, the cole slaw wasnt good enough to finish even a half cup. Yellow jackets kept hovering around and landing on our plates, which was disgusting and annoying. There was a roll of paper towels attached to a beam that served as napkins. For this, we paid over $30 and left unsatisfied. I recommend you head on over to Sharks BBQ on Rochester Road instead where you will find a much greater variety of sides that includes red rice and beans. You get more food and better food for less money, and the servers actually smile.

This place is so mediocre, but now i know why... the guy came from Lockharts and that place sucked also. Im barely giving it 2 stars, since it should only get 1.5. BBQ in Detroit is as lame as can get. People try to emulate what they see or taste elsewhere but thats all they can do. The ribs here were scrawny and dry... way too freaking chewy. The brisket was ok when i wasnt eating a gob full of fat that i didnt notice. The cornbread is a joke, its dry and crumbly and has zero taste to it.. jiffy out of the box tastes better than this dreck. The sauces were just that.. sauces.. not complexity, nothing exciting... BBQ should be good without the sauce, but when it isnt even with the sauce, you know it sucks. People who give this 5 stars obviously havent left Michigan and went to the real deal stuff, not the tourist trap places that they end up going to. Just avoid this place and go on vacation to get real BBQ, since this isnt it.

Where do I start , oh lets start on the side ,cuz if you want some you have to pay for them they do not come with anything you order , I ordered "the holy trinity " ribs, brisket and sausage $14 no sides, ribs (3 bones)were dry, salty and Chewy one of the bones was that fatty ass end part, brisket (2 slices ) was tender but the fat line was way too big making them greasy, sausage 3 small slices was OK, wife got ribs 1/2 slab same story as mine we spent $ 28 and again no sides , wanted to try the burnt ends but they were out and after my wifes rib order they were out of ribs, what out of ribs? How does a rib joint run out of ribs, now Im a fat bastard so I consider myself a pretty good judge of rib joints and have visited many across this great land of ours , maybe it was a bad day for them (it certainly was for us) but with so many things wrong I doubt if we will be back.
