My life is often a tumultuous escapade, centered as it is around our 11-month-old whirling dervish of a daughter, but any residual stress and discombobulation melt away whenever my husband* arrives from Salem with a tasty treat from A & J King. This happens about once every 2.5 months, always brings a smile to my mouth, and is somehow enough to keep me going. *A member of Salems storied commercial class, he is quoted as saying "Ive never had anything bad from A & J King. In fact, everything has been quite good. Coffee...bread...pastries...sandwiches. I exempt none of these from the list of ever-pleasant offerings from this fine establishment."

This artisanal bakery in downtown Salem is a favorite on the North Shore. It even published its own cookbook with a major publisher. Dont come here looking for decorated sheet cakes. The focus is on bread loaves, rolls, cookies, pastries, and specialty baked desserts. You can eat in or carry out, but its always so crowded that I dont like to get a table there. Incidentally, the bakery is only a block from a fantastic wine & cheese shop so youre in foodie heaven. Its also a block from Reds Diner, another, much older Salem institution well worth checking out.

Espresso was fabulous but CAPPUCCINO was HORRIBLE COFFEE LIQUID AT BOTTOM MORE THAN 1/2 OF 8 OZ CUP WAS LARGE FOAM BUBBLESSTIRRED IT ALL TOGETHER LESS THAN 1/2 CUP OF PRODUCT NOT A CAPPUCCINO DONE RIGHT LATTES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME NO DIFFERENCE, IF THIS PLACE HAD A REAL TRAINED BARISTA IT WOULD BE FAMOUS FOR REAL NEEDS PROPER STEAMING OF MILK NOT ENOUGH COFFEE IN CAPPUCCINO MAKING

One of my favorite places ever! Everything is made fresh every single day. Many ingredients, like berries, oats, milk etc are from local farms or growers. They have seasonal specials and you can preorder items for holidays or gatherings. They have a solid coffee and tea selection. Its a great place to sit and chat with friends or just people watch. The decor is unique and definitely Instagram worthy. If youre in Salem you must visit this place!

There is literally no better place to get bread, or baked goods of any kind... not to mention their incredible coffee! The quality and artistry that goes into the product here are unmatched anywhere else in this region. The staff is skilful, friendly, and prompt. The owners are visionary and down-to-earth. Everything about A&J King Artisan Bakers is the best.

I went to Paris recently, and was really looking forward to eating croissants, quiches, and the like for every meal. (and I did) But I wasnt blown away by the quality like I thought I would be. Know why? Because Ive been going to the King for 5 years now, and Ive already had the best available. Seriously, if this place ever moved, Id follow them.

Great selection of pastry - the croissant and Danish we got were up there with great pastry Ive had in Boulder, Boston, and San Francisco. So many more items I wish I could have tried. Also has a solid drinks menu, highly recommend the tea lattes. Their artisan breads looked great.

This is how bread is supposed to be. Run by a wife-husband team, they are bakers to the depths of their very souls (the intro to their baking book shows just how committed they are). The bread is fantastic and the parties divine. The service was kind and efficient.

Amazing! Delicious walnut cinnamon rolls...the best weve ever had! and the spiced pear turnover was to die for...sumptuous butter pastry and the perfect amount of filling. The coffee was perfect. Definitely will be back to try the other offerings.

Amazing product, weak service. What great bread, what a lackluster front of house operation (slow, inaccurate, did I mention slow!). Totally worth going as long as you focus on what you are there for, the bread.

Amazing quality food and fantastic coffee. Its a small location, so when it gets busy, you might not always have a seat. Good news is that theres a park close by, so you can enjoy your food in the sun.

The best bread and baked goods you will ever find in the north shore and probably anywhere. Everything is always fresh, and it is a great place for a quick breakfast. Also the coffee is great to boot.
