I have been to CarterQue BBQ a number of times and always found it a really good experience . Except until May 20th (why i only gave it one star). I decided that this is where i wanted to go with my family for my 50th birthday and really looked forward to it. They were having a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society which was great! I had just lost my dad to leukemia on May 5th. Anyway, it was quite busy but, we got seated immediately. Our server, Madison (from the check) came and took our orders. 50 minutes later, we finally got our appetizers after we saw two identical apps go to a table that came a good while after us. We continued to ask Madison but all she said was "I put them in" with no offer of an apology. I said well, they should be comped then. Later, Zack, the manager for that night came by and said hed give us 10% off the tab which was...ok. He said they had some new people in the kitchen. Another excuse without any type of "were really sorry". And by the way, when the apps came, they were luke warm at best. Very disappointing. Our meals finally came about 80 minutes after we sat down and again, the meals were luke warm. My daughters mashed potatoes were congealed like they had been sitting under a warming lamp for eternity. My youngest daughters meal never arrived. Madison again only said "I put it in" no apology just another excuse. The BBQ as always was very good but this was a horrific experience. To top it off when we were leaving, Zack brought my daughters meal and said heres your pulled pork platter to go. No Zack, it was a pulled pork platter that never came. I shared my meal with my daughter! Anyway, restaurants have bad days, i get that. What made this extremely bad was the lack of caring showed by the staff. Madison was a weak server at best and it was apparent in the whole place that Zack really wasnt managing things well at all. With Chubbys, Black Hog, and other options around, unfortunately it will be a good while before we go back to CarterQue for anything other than a bottle of sauce.

Been here twice. Both times packed but had no issues getting a seat right away. Food was pretty good but not award winning by any means but thats not a terrible thing. Some things I wish were improved to make it better would be to use a higher quality apple sauce, corn bread not corn enough but I still liked it..was moist. And it feels like they are a little hesitant to give you lots of sauce...not sure why. Other than that the pork was smokey tender and I liked it once I had enough sauce (I like my pork smothered in sauce). My friend had ribs and they were fall off the bone...no issue there. The potato salad was ehh.....ok. Some of the reviews here have echoed what I am saying...overall I would rate the experience a 7 or 8 as for overall quality etc. Id still go back.....not sure I understand the really low reviews...its not THAT bad....just dont set expectations extremely high and youll be fine. .....the staff have been friendly and they hustle.

I went there on a Friday evening, there was a decent amount of people there, but no wait. We ordered our food and drinks at the same time, because after receiving the menu, the waitress did not make it around to us for about 15 minutes. She quickly took our orders and about 10 minutes later our food came out. I kindly reminded her about our drinks she apologized and said that she would go grab them. 20 minutes past and our food is eaten, I run to the bathroom to wash my hands of the BBQ sauce remnants, catch her eye and remind her how thirsty we are. She comes by and asks if we are ready for the check and brings us our drinks. Totally unacceptable will never visit again.

The pulled pork and brisket were very dry and despite a noticeable smoke ring, they didnt have the smoky flavor I expected. This was barbeque that needed a heavy sauce, and for that alone I can only give 2 stars. Fortunately, the Black Raspberry Barbeque Sauce is every bit as good as they describe it, even though it is rather thick for my preference. The fried okra and sweet potato fries were the highlights of my platter. The service was also very good and the food was delivered quite quickly, so the overall experience was good. Regardless, I would not recommend you go out of your way for this que.

Food wasnt bad, had 2 pulled pork sliders, 2 brisket sliders, some O rings, and a sweet tea. The only I was missing was a sweater, felt like they had the AC on in the middle of winter. I asked to get the heat turned up (2 folks sitting next to us complained as well when they first sat down) and Im not really sure it was done...was still very cold til the time we left. So back to the food, yeah it was good, I will definitely go again and try some other dishes.

The BBQ is just ok. Black Hog is definitely better but for Mt Airy, this is as good as it gets. I cant believe that they charge for sauce on take out orders. I picked up a pound of pulled pork @$10.50/lb and they charged $3.99 for 8oz of sauce to go with it. Once home, I made a sandwich and pork had zero smoke flavor. I smoke pork, chicken and beef a lot and this tasted like it never saw the inside of a smoker. At least not one with any wood chips in it.

Staff was great except for the manager whom didnt like the feedback in the dry meats. Food was ok. The best was the green beans as well as all the BBQ sauces. Corn bread was moist but didnt have any corn in the bread. Brisket was over cooked, and nothing like real Texas brisket. Had them replace the dry brisket with chicken, which was very dry as well and I just ate the sides. Price was high for the dry tasteless food.

Our familys go-to restaurant. Excellent BBQ with choice of 4 speciality sauces (my fav is black raspberry, husbands is ol red, both sons like hot & tany) and bar with rotating local craft beer selection. Friendly service. Expect wait at dinner and weekends since popular with locals. Large portions. In fact I usually get a Quaban sandwich which is right amount of meat for me since dinners are so generous.

Carterque is a welcome treat in Mount Airy. Excellent pork barbecue, beef brisket, and more. I would give them 5 stars, if they improved their sides a bit, and lowered the price of their sauce. The sides are good, but not as good as the BBQ. Their BBQ sauce is very good, but pricey. All in all, a very good bbq restaurant.
