This is usually my all time favorite Chinese restaurant. My family and I have been coming here for YEARS!! We love Hunan, and know the owners and servers...Always ask for Thomas or his wife, they will treat you to the best customer service all day! 5 Stars! We do highly recommend this place. ....BUT.... Fast forward to today. 3 Stars :-( I hadnt been to Hunan for several months we walked in for lunch (until 3pm) and sat at Peters table. We ordered our meals (lunch combo fried rice, no beef, Gen chicken, egg drop soup, egg rolls), then I ordered a lunch combo fried rice (chicken/veg only) for mom to go at 2:48pm. When I got the receipt, I see that Ive been charged full dinner price for the fried rice. ..that dish it seems wasnt entered until after 3pm...hmmmm and I even mentioned the time when I ordered 2:48pm...no it wasnt busy, and def no accommodation. IMO I feel that it was done real slick. ... so of course Im not going to tip 20% on the inflated amount. I tipped 11% of the inflated amount even though I thought Peter was undeserving. The fried rIce was fresh. The General chickenwas a tad overcooked? Or maybe Friday in refried before tossed in the sauce? The egg rolls refried. ..from earlier, and the egg drop soup was so thick it fell like jam off the spoon. When it was time to leave we said thank you, with a smile and goodbye to Peter and the staff but was greeted with cold silence by him. I guess he did not like the $3.06 tip on a $29 (inflated) check. At leastwe tipped and were not difficult/bothersom at all! How rude!! Needs a bit of re-training. Hunan what has happened to you?? Im hoping this was just an off day as I will still be back...to sit at Thomass section and receive the great service and tasty food that my family has come to know and love. Customer service- 2 ☆ down from 3 for rude Behavior when we were walking out. Food- 3☆ fried rice tasty! Other items not so much today, sorry!

Got there and the bus boy was real quick to get us the water and hot tea. Then looked at the menu and decided what we wanted and still didnt get any service. Then finally after waiting a good 20 min a waiter comes walking by and I said "excuse me!?".. his response was "One Minute". Not Ill be with you in one minute. Then when he comes back he has an attitude and says " what can I get you". Not sorry for the wait are you ready to order, what may I get you? I asked for Kung Pao Chicken with no nuts and asked if he could substitute mushrooms instead of nuts. His response was "thats $1 extra and it would be too hard for him to do because he doesnt have a button for it on the register for that". we were never given the fried noodles, to dip in the sauces, like I saw other patrons were given (I didnt ask for them since I dont really need them)..Then when our egg rolls come he slams the plates down with the two egg rolls on it and splits the plates ..then takes a knife and puts the egg rolls on each separate plate and just walks away. When the food came my mom was drinking hot tea and he literally put the plate on the table and slide her tea out of the way with the plate he was rudely putting onto the table. He never once asked how is everything,? can I get you anything? Nothing at all. The whole time I felt like i was inconvienincing him. I was so offended and annoyed when I left. Id give this place less then a 1 star but thats the lowest rating i can give them. For the prices they charge for the food you would think the service would be a lot better but thats not the case. I wouldnt recommend this place to my worst enemy.

This is the first time Iam writing a review for a restaurant. We had a party of 11 for my fathers birthday party, 1)Host-Female host was friendly but male host was kind of rude(TONE OF WHY ARE YOU HERE?). 2)Waiter-We had to wait 15 minuits for waiter to come and take our drink order. I asked waiter about recommendation and he acted like hurry up and order. We asked for napkins and they handed me one piece of napkin for eleven people. Drinks didnt even get served until we were in the middle of dinner. 3)Food- Nothing special about food here. Infact food used to be alot better 5-6 years ago. Rather order from local chinese delivery. 4)Price-Yes, it is cheaper than most of chinese restaurants but portions are very small. Almost half size. Ordered two lobsters and It came out to be $132 dollars plus tax. Waiter didnt explained anything or showed the sizes of lobsters and charged $132 dollars. I was very disppointed after looking at the lobster dish. It did not look like two 3lb lobsters(suppose to be $22 dollars per lb). I felt RIPPED OFF BIG TIME. THIS IS THE HIGH LIGHT OF THE DINNER~~~~~ TIPS-----WAITER WHO PERFORMED BELOWED SERVICE BROUGHT THE CHECK AND SAID I WOULD LIKE 18% TIP, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? HE EVEN CIRCLED THE BOTTOM OF THE CHECK WHERE IT SAYS 18% AND SAID GIVE ME 18% TO MY FACE(I LEFT MORE THAN 18% ANYWAYS). TIPS ARE SUPPOSE TO BE GRATITUTE. DIDNT WANT TO SAY ANYTHING TO THE MANAGEMENT AT THE TIME BECAUSE DIDNT WANT TO RUIN THE BIRTHDAY. KEEP THINKING ABOUT THE SITUATION AND IT PISSES ME OFF. IT WAS NOT WORTH $450 DOLLAR DINNER AT ALL. I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE.

I frequented Hunan Manor once every 2 months for many years, but my past 2 meals there have been lackluster. Wait, lackluster would be generous. The one time was one week after the storm, and both of our seafood selection tasted funny and spoiled. Another dish with tofu, had very firm tofu, with an unusually tough skin; the dish had an unexpectedly sour undertone. I invited out-of-town friends and didnt want to complain during the dinner. Afterwards, i called and spoke with the manager by phone. To my surprise, the manager was not surprised that the seafood wasnt up-to-par. He indicated that there was electricity outage during the storm, and it must have been the squid. When I told him that the tofu dish was out-of-the-ordinarily, in the negative sense, the manager once again immediately pointed out the foul ingredient. His words made sense. I was glad the manager admitted that there was a problem. I thought this was an isolated incidence, so I went back in 1-2 months with another group of friends. The soup was burnt -- it smelled like barbecue. The fresh fish that was swimming in the tank tasted like frozen fish. The relative expensive meal, a bill of $170, before gratuity, for a party of 4, left us very disappointed. Years ago, I would have given this restaurant 4 stars. After these experiences, I erased 3 of the stars, regretfully so.

This place used to be a 3.5 star restaurant when it competed with China Chef off Ceder Lane. China Chef was by far the better Chinese Restaurant. Easily 5 stars for dining experience, food quality and food variety, its "retired" chefs could produce spectacular food! The basic menu offered a Chicken Homestyle served in a glazed pot that was always just right. Its a shame, but after a few years as the choice as the Best in Columbia, Columbia Magazine curiously changed, voting every year for the inferior Hunan Manor. If the food critic had a palate, Columbia would still have both. Surprisingly, Hunan Manor can not produce an acceptable fried rice. Sticky, oily and bland to dry and bland, the chefs are hopelessly lost when confronted with such an elemental dish. However, the times I ordered the whole fish (Market Priced, served head on.) with sweet and sour sauce and with special Hunan sauce, they were excellent. Moist and flaky flesh. Because the classics like Hunan Beef, Pot Stickers, Spring Rolls and the soups are at best average, I rarely dine there anymore. I mourn the loss of China Chef, and do not understand why Columbia did not support the one Chinese restaurant that would stand out against all competition.
