Great food, great people, great price! The owner is very involved in the daily operations of the restaurant: he was behind the sushi bar, bussing tables, and chatting with customers. Exactly what I like to see when I go to a privately owned place. Drew and Chris were the sushi chefs, and they know what they are doing behind the glass. Dont pass up a chance to sit at the sushi bar and hang out! The sushi and sashimi was excellent. They had a few fish in straight from Japan that were suggested by the chefs (another reason to sit at the sushi bar!) Ordered 2 of the 3 and would have regretted missing out. Side note: their happy hour is legit. If you want to dip your toe in the pool, thats the way to do it. Mixed crowd of older and younger, so its a great place to take the parents when they come in town. Overall, we had a fantastic experience. Really happy to see Hello Sushi usurped and that this place has come in its place. Definitely going to make it our go-to sushi place from now on.

This week I was watching Scandal where Olivia served this beautiful 20-layer crepe cake with the perfect amount of creme in the middle. It looked divine and I wondered... where on earth can I find that!? Then I used Yelp! to find a great sushi place and found Umami. Amazingly, there were reviews for a crepe/creme layered cake like the one that I saw on TV! It did not disappoint! I had the Brussels sprouts that everyone on Yelp! mentioned, they were delicious and well presented. Our delightful server recommended their Japanese Mojito - an absolute must have. My main course was the sashimi - Yellow Tail, Tuna and Salmon are always my staple. I splurged with the Toro - Folks, worth every penny. It tasted as though it was just flown in this morning. Chef Cong stopped by the table and was lovely getting to know! When you walk in, you may be greeted by his wife Thom who is equally as wonderful!

The Sushi Chef and owner Chef Cong is really passionate about his food and specializes in Omakase. He offers a very unique and interesting menu with lots of ingredients not found anywhere else in Baton Rouge. Sitting at the Sushi bar he truly wants to get to know his customers in order to serve them better. I had an amazing meal there that including spiny lobster sashimi, fresh ebi, uni, king salmon, Japanese sea bream and more! If you are a adventurous eater or you simply love and appreciate Japanese cuisine, you owe it to yourself to give Umami a try. It is so refreshing to have a place like this that doesnt just specialize in fried tempura rolls loaded with spicy tuna and cream cheese. Umami is one of the best Baton Rouge has to offer!

Tried this place recently as my husband and I had heard good things about it. Amazing sushi - tried the tiger and sunshine rolls, both were rich and flavorful. Unfortunately the service was not as good. Our waitress took our order and brought the food, then disappeared. She did not introduce herself and did not check on us at any point - in fact we had finished dishes, and ran out of drinks for quite awhile until another waiter noticed and stopped by. It took even longer to get the check. The place wasnt very busy as we were having dinner in the middle of the week, so not sure what the cause was. Overall easily the best sushi weve had, but due to the subpar service we will choose other places in the future.

The atmosphere is tranquil and relaxing. The service would get 6 stars if I could. To see servers cover for one another and work together for the business is a lost art in this day. Our server Addison was par excellance. The drink was never empty, the dirty plates did not sit more than a minute. The other servers checked on us when they passed by and would pick up dishes as they passed. The food? The best sushi I have had in years. It rivals Tsunami, Nogoya, and anyone else in a 100 mile radius easy. If Japanese honor were to exist today as in days of old, it still lives on here. To top it off, the Green Tea Crepe Cake was superb and light, and of course delicious. Hijo no yoku yarimashita!!!

Best japanese food in BR. A little expensive for the area it is in, but thats because everything is incredibly high quality, down to the dinner salads. The chefs put out incredibly complex, delicious food, and every dish is an experience. Even the drinks go above and beyond and the green tea crepe cake is how I want to end every meal I have for the rest of my life. It is miles above the cheap japanese restaurants surrounding campus, and even takes down the famed Tsunami, outclassing the downtown joint in creativity, food, and service. 5 star experience, every time.

I eat at this restaurant pretty regularly. The happy hour is such a great deal. I love their sushi. I love the atmosphere of this restaurant as well. The food is amazing and probably the best sushi/Japanese restaurant in baton Rouge as far as Im concerned. The staff are quick and efficient. I recommend anyone to try this place. And while youre there make sure you also try the hangover soup. I type this all while Im about to place an order to pick up! Cant get enough!

Best sushi ever. The chef has some great specialty rolls that do not disappoint. Have the "Sexiest Man Alive" if you have anything, and the "Geisha" is very clean. Loved the service, loved the chef, loved the atmosphere. Absolutely the best sushi I have ever had. I ate at Tsunami last night because everyone said that is the place to eat. All Tsunami has is a view...that is it. Cannot even compare to Umami.

Super super good! The only thing I could complain about was that our server was seriously trying to rush us out of there which was a little annoying. For example, we ordered dessert and she ran into the kitchen and back out in the next minute and plopped the cake in the middle of our entrees while saying "I dont know if this is too early, but here you go" and ran off.

My wife and I have eaten here twice now and really enjoy it. The happy hour is a great deal and something worth trying. We enjoy the salmon roll, yellowtail roll, and California roll. A pleasant surprise are the brussel sprouts. Weve also had very friendly and quick service when we ate here. Highly recommend...

I am sorry to say this but... the food is plain and tasteless, definitely is not worth the price. I had some rolls for lunch, the rice was falling apart and the flavor was not there. I will rather spend my time and money somewhere else . The only excellent thing was the service, our waitress was very nice.

Dont think twice. If you can eat here, you would be crazy not to. Hands down best sushi of my life. Such a talented team of chefs and incredibly friendly. Theyre always coming up with new menu items for appetizers. This place is fantastic. If I could give 10 stars, I would.

We have been going here for a year and a half when it was still named "Hello Sushi". Chef Kong has always taken great care of us. We try to go here at least twice before I go back offshore. We always sit at the sushi bar and let them freestyle.
