Went in for lunch today because we had a coupon from the Entertainment book for buy one entree, get one free which stated in bold text, VALID ANYTIME When I went to check out, I was told it would only be honored for dinner, it says valid ANYTIME. I think that the waiter may have been trying to say it stated "dine in only". We went in for dine in at lunch and when our plates arrived, the news stated a tornado was on its way. Considering I had 2 young children with me, I asked to have 2 boxes due to the storm, so we boxed our food to head for safety. However, that is no different than dining in and then taking home leftovers. Maybe they are worried without the dine in experience, they will not receive a tip? However, even with my dissatisfaction, the waiter received more than 20% because they did prepare my food and I did not have time to discuss the matter and wait for change due to the possible tornado. Just very upset that considering the unusual circumstances I was told I could not save a whopping $5.50. Sad that I will no longer return there over a $5 issue. I just wish Mexico Tipico/La Botana never closed!!!!!!

The very first of Louisvilles "gateway Mex" joints--arguably the one where most of the others descended from--and still one of the best. ("Gateway Mex" is my term for Mexican places that--while Americanized enough that you wont be getting lengua burritos as a menu option--are less "Anglo-ified" than the average texmex place like Tumbleweed or Chevys. Youll be able to fairly reliably get carnitas and pillow ranchero (and huevos con chorizo on the breakfast menu) and the beer list will probably have Negra Modelo somewhere ;). Texmex is actually difficult to find locally--the "gateway Mex" places took over the "chimichanga and margarita dinner" market, with a string of "for the home crowd" places in Okolona that are more authentic and are more "hole in the wall".) This place has been around for around the past 30 years or so (spending its first 25 or so on the Okolona strip) and the move here is recent...food is still good though.

I wanted to write a review endorsing the quality and favor of the food, their cleanliness, and the friendliness and of the management and staff of the restaurant. I eat Mexican food several times a week and I have eaten at all of the Mexican restaurants in Louisville over the years. El Caporal is consistently the very best and because of this my family and I have been customers of the restaurant for over 8 years. I have taken large groups from different business relationship many times and they always please our groups along with everyone raving about the food and service. I encourage you to visit the restaurant and ask for Luis, their manager/owner, and prepare yourself for great food and a great atmosphere.

We shared the double fajitas with everything. Even with a beer and a margarita and Guac on the side, it was less than 30 dollars for the meal. Great value for a TON of food! If you want value for your money, get the double fajitas! You will have left overs for days! And thats saying a lot in my house where food disappears quickly! :). Waiter could have been more attentive. Took a about 10 minutes before he noticed we were needing some more tortillas, and it wasnt even our server. The place was fairly empty so I think they were just relaxing before the dinner rush. But still, all your customers deserve your attention. In short. Great food! Good value, but the service could have been better.

We absolutely love this restaurant. Of all of the Mexican restaurants in town, and there are a bunch, this is by far our favorite. The food is great, the portions are fantastic, and the staff is friendly beyond words. I love that so many of the staff are fixtures and we feel like weve really gotten to know them over the years. Our family loves to eat Mexican food, and weve been to them all: El this, el that, and el no. El Caporal remains our favorite

Better than expected. This place is amazingly good and the staff is fast and friendly. I heard this place (El Caporal) was good. I tried it out and now El Caporal is on my favorite list. The food and drinks are full of flavor and the portions are very large. The Margaritas are strong and full of flavor. Please try it for yourself.

We got the dinner combos at $9 apiece. They are large portions with plenty leftovers to take home. I got the chili relleno that I am not used to having it deep-fried filled with cheese covered in red sauce. If I go again, Ill get something different.

This is great authentic Mexican Food. Everything was made fresh and the flavor of the food was great. I am very picky eater and I was very satisfied with my food. I had a steak and the burrito asado. Guacamole salad is awesome.

The bottled beer was past expiration date and the hamburger meat was bland, tasteless - shouldnt it taste like it contains taco seasoning? Seasoned meat in a taco salad isnt far fetched, is it?

The food was good and seemed more authentic than El Nopal, however the restaurant seemed dated and the booths were very small. If you weigh more than 200 lbs you wont fit comfortably.

Grilled chicken tacos have great flavor, but the salsa isnt as spicy as it should be, and the meat portions on the tacos arent as big as other local competitors.

We visited this place for a late lunch (around 3pm). The food was not bad, but the server keeps disappearing. A more attentive server would have been nice...

I prefer this to the other nearby options. The food is better, and the complimentary chips seem fresher and a hair thinner and crispier than the others.

Fast friendly service, good sized meal portions and a nice stylized environment. Even though it is a bar and restaurant, they are pretty much separated.

Love this place! The food comes out before you even touch the chips. The margaritas are strong and the staff is awesome! I always recommend this place.

Good food, family friendly atmosphere. I dont recommend anything with shredded beef though. It just doesnt taste as good as their other meat offerings.
