I was in the area with a friend who had been saying for days how much she wanted Korean food so we made a stop here on Sunday around 2pm. As of now, there only seems to be three Korean restaurants of note and all of them in the Shawnee Mission/Overland Park area. We wanted to try Sobahn, but theyre not opened on Sundays and I just envision Mrs. Kim from Gilmore Girls saying - NO. Go away. So we tried Chosun instead. Only Chosun and Choga seem to have actual grill tables. From what I can tell Sobahn cooks all the food in the back, which for me takes some of the fun out of Korean BBQ. Although, if youre doing lunch and dont want your clothes to smell of pork and beef that might be a decent option. When we arrived there were only 4 other tables seated. There are about 4-5 six seaters along the wall when you enter and another 8 four seater grill tables along the far wall. There are also booths and tables without grills. When you enter theres no host stand so you kind of just have to wait until someone sees you to be acknowledged and seated which on a busy night could be awkward. We decided to order the Combo 4 with bulgogi, beef brisket, pork belly and pork shoulder. The bulgogi and shoulder were marinated, the brisket and belly were not. It came with romaine lettuce, garlic, a gojujuang sauce and jalapenos. A basic but tasty lettuce salad started it off and when the meat arrived so did the banchan. I have to say the banchan was a little disapointing. There were only 5 options. When I do Korean BBQ in LA or Chicago theres at least 8 or more different dishes. This is Kansas City, but still a bit of kale, 3 small broccoli florets, daikon kimchi, cabbage kimichi and some kind of hot dog kimchi dont really cut it. Where are the pickles? Wheres the tofu? A missed opportunity I think. The meat, however, was a good quality and the grills worked really well, giving a nice char to all the meat. I had to turn it up though as they only set it to 1 of 3 "flames" when they lit it. There were two sauces, a very salty sesame one and another one I couldnt remember tasting of anything really. Service was interesting. Our waitress was new and let us know that. Not a problem, she was attentive and tried, but whenever she came by to check on us she would clear something from the table. Not a bad thing, except when she would reach across us while we were eating to pick up a straw wrapper or empty dish. A bit intrusive but better attentive than dismissive, I guess. A decent experience overall. Im excited to try Choga to compare the two.

Me and my brother went to Hawaii a few years ago and stumbled into a Korean BBQ (I assume that is the right phrase) restaurant. To this day I still think that was the best meal Ive ever eaten. The flavors were so alive, Id never had anything like it before. We had it cooked as opposed to cooking it ourselves. We also found a Korean BBQ buffet in Hawaii, but we didnt know what we were doing and it didnt turn out as nice as the first place. Today was my birthday, and I wanted to try Korean BBQ again. Nothing on the menu today really looked like what we ate in Hawaii. The beef that we got was more like a pulled or shredded beef instead of thin slices. There were onions instead of sprouts, ext. But, it was still very tasty. And, they had all kinds of little side dishes that we all really enjoyed trying. And, if you ran out of side dishes, they would refill them for you. Again we didnt cook it ourselves. Better that we have a meal prepared by someone that knows what they are doing. We didnt even sit at one of the tables with a cooker. I find them uncomfortable and always banged my knees against them. It was a nice little spot. Id like to go back again and try something else.

Ive been hearing a lot of hype about this Chosun BBQ restaurant, so.....me liking to explore a variety of ethnic dishes, I took my girlfriend to this place last night. Coming in to the restaurant, it felt very welcoming! Right from the get go, our host seated us and our server was with us in a matter of seconds! After bringing our refreshments, the server explained the menu very thoroughly, explaining what type of bbq meat they had and that was very popular, to all the traditional Korean dishes they had to offer. My girlfriend ordered the Yangneum galbi with nangmeun( korean cold noodle dish that is PHENOMENAL!!) and I went with the ooguji galbi ttang( korean spicy stew with rib meat it it that is also an amazing dish!!) Throughout the meal, our server was very attentive and refilled our drinks whenever it was half full and asked if we needed anything when our side dishes were running low. I can write a book on how well our experience was at Chosun BBQ. To cut it short, the food was excellent and the service was paramount! Loved it and will come again soon!

I have been to several Korean BBQ restaurant. They all are a little expensive but justifiable. My wife got some noddles and I got bulgogi. They had horrible service, ordered an ice tea to drink and it was horrible, ended up trading it in on a Dr. Pepper. My bulgogi tasted like it had been tossed in a ash tray before they served it. Wife is Korean and she didnt care much for her meal either. For the both of us to eat was 70.00 without a tip. I really felt as if I was cheated out of my money without knowing it. Save yourself the hassle and just go to the one at 105th and Metcalf, half the price and great service too. If the owner ever reads this please contact me. You stole my hard earned money. I want it back. You square up with me and Ill take my review down.

My wife and I just came into town for the first time and decided on Korean for early dinner. We ordered two take out entrees at the beginning of our meal so we could enjoy a late meal or breakfast the next day. Toward the end of our meal, the server told us that they ran out of items to make one and that their Chef left. Server said the Chef would be back in 10-15 mins if we still wanted the other take out order! We could not believe that they waited till the end if the meal to tell us this... and why would the Chef leave after we placed our take out order? Maybe the server forgot to place the order? The food was overpriced and did not taste authentic... Never coming back. Highly recommend going to Sobahn instead. We had a great experience at Sobahn.

Im not one to try something new so when our Grandson took us there, I was quite skeptical. However, when we walked in the door, we were treated so well that we almost felt like we were part of a very large family. SOO was our server and was absolutely fantastic! Be sure to ask for him. He was very polite, respectful, and very knowledgeable! We loved him from the start. When we told him we had never been there before, he immediately went into guide mode. He explained every aspect of the food and cooked the food for us. As for the food, he cooked it to perfection! We will definitely be going back and I hope we can do so in the near future. We give this restaurant 10 stars! And if the owner reads this, please give Soo a raise, he earned it!
