@TheWigPenPizzaP is decent if you like cheese on your pizza. The main entry area and front room of the place smelled sour, as if it were a rest area restroom with that not so quiet bleach odor mixed with sewer smell mixed with wood. That set the tone. The décor was nice. The staff people friendly. I noticed several waitresses wearing sandals/open toed shoes. While I adore a good bright pink pedicure, I just find it unsanitary if wait staff wear such shoes. My 10 inch pizza pie was substantial. It was The Flying Tomato pan crust with Italian sausage and bacon. It was off putting I ordered Italian Sausage and bacon as the toppings but there were tomato slices on top when it was delivered to the table. It must be their signature thing. I dont care for tomatoes. The pizza was heaped with cheese. I found it difficult to find any toppings on the pizza and there just wasnt enough sauce to my liking. But there was cheese. Cheese galore. Lots of cheese. Maybe all the toppings shifted to one corner of the pizza during baking? My dining experience was mouthfuls of crust and cheese with a small smattering taste of sauce with occasional sausage pieces thrown it. It really was quite cheesy tasteless. I didnt ever taste the bacon. Unsatisfied. It was cheesy though. I had fun cutting through the cheesiness. I dont diss on cheese. There just wasnt much flavor at all to this pizza. Appetizers were ok. The chicken wings (wings zings) were meaty and zesty. The spinach and artichoke dip was served with corn chips. It was good at first but cooled quickly and became hard and difficult to dip in the chips, becoming a mass of material after finally cooling. The breaded mushrooms were very hot and good. The staff were accommodating and helpful and nice. I am glad I tried this business out. You might as well give it a try. Youll be glad you did.

The Wig and Pen is your typical game day pub just down the hill from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The design is a classic pub with a British theme. I stopped in while working a game at Carver Hawkeye and we were lucky enough to just beat the pre game rush. The pub is divided into three rooms. The crew I was with took up pretty much the whole back room and we did this so we could watch basketball and kind of be away from every one. The tables were kind of wierd...not really the tables, but the chairs actually. They were plastic patio furniture that didnt fint under the table, so it was actaully very uncomfortable trying to eat. Our waitress came back and took orders. We were divided amongst three tables because they wont split the check for parties over 6, so we sat no more than 6 to a table so we could get checks split. The menu consisted of sandwhiches and pizzas. They had both a thin crust and a Chicago style pizza and the Chicago style actually looked like a true Chicago style pizza. Due to time constraints, I went with the Italian beef and fries. The beef is served dry, but comes with a side of au jus. The bun is just a sub bun, not the hoagie bun I prefer, but they did butterfly it instead of split it. I dumped the au jus to soak the sandwhich and it tasted just fine. The fries were out of the bag thin and crispy. They actually tacked on a buck for the fries...the sandwhich was supposed to come with chips. Most of the others around me go the sandwhiches also. There were burgers, grinders, chicken sandwhiches etc., so there was a big selection. At the end, the waitress got a little frazzled getting everyones check right, but in a big group that is understandable. I got out for $11 including tip and we even got a ride back to the arena on the pubs party bus.

Kind of a strange way to treat customers...I called and ordered onion rings; I heard they were good and thought Id give them a try. No problem placing the order. I asked how long until the order was done and she said 10 minutes. I said good - I will see you then. I got there and the guy said they would be about 10 minutes. Why was the order not ready as she said? Oh, that was for my convenience. So the food would be hot. So, for my convenience, I went somewhere else and shall not ever spend money there. For their convenience.

If we were just talking pizza, Id give it 5 stars. I believe these guys are probably the best pizza place in town. Not as impressed with the rest of their menu. Its not bad at all but its just not on the same level as their pizza. One note however is Im a thin crust pizza kind of guy. I think their flying tomato is just way too much cheese...like way too much...but a lot of people seem to love it. Ive never had their chicago style so take my rating I guess for thin crusts. Its a fun bar too with lots of cubs fans.

We ate there based on the reviews as it looked like most of the reviews were 4 stars or better. The service was quick and friendly. It was busy but we were seated almost right away and had service immediately. The thing we didnt like was the pizza. We had the Flying Tomato Pizza. The pizza had way too much cheese. The sauce had no flavor and it could have been cooked just a little bit more. It wasnt horrible, but could have been better. I would maybe give them another chance based on the good service.

Their Chicago-style pizza is fairly comparable to Giordanos... At least the plain cheese one was, I havent tried the others yet. Friendly service, and when I went they had multiple people walking around filling drinks and asking tables if they needed anything else so you didnt have to wait for your specific busy server to come check up on you. The parking situation at this location is a disaster though, with narrow spots and very little room to maneuver.

Excellent service and neat atmosphere. The Cobb Salad was great, and the pizza was alright but it didnt live up to the hipe. It was a level of spicy that I find unpleasant, and the overall construction of it was such that the components fell apart and tumbled into a pile. It felt less like eating pizza and more like a tossed "pizza salad". Try the fried avocado slices or get yourself a salad to share.

Their battered onion strips were exactly what we were looking for, but the fish & chips clearly came from a frozen product and their grilled cheese sandwich on marbled rye bread was flavorless and miserable. However, I have been told that this is what you get for going to a pizza joint and choosing not to order their pizza. Everything sat in a small pool of grease.

Incredible pizza! Great pub style spot with some delicious pies! The flying tomato version of anything is the way to go. Great beer selection and really good appetizers to go along with the best pizza in the area! The flying tomato takes a bit of time to make so order when you get in. Great outdoor seating area for when its nice outside.

Away from Iowa City for 9 months and upon my return the first meal I had was at the Wig&Pen. WHY? The best pizza! I usually get the 10" Chicago Style Meatball w/green bell peppers, and it is easily a 2 person meal. Trust me on the portions; I am 6ft 300lb guy and can only eat 1/2. Honestly dont think its gets better. Luv me some Wig&Pen.
