K to be frank. The specialty drinks are 10-12 dollars a piece and not very strong. We had the same roll made two different ways at our table. I ordered Kettle One vodka martini. The waitress came back, said they were out of Kettle. I said Absolut is fine. She came back and said they were able to get a Kettle One. I taste it. It was clearly sweet as though it had been topped off with simple syrup or sprite. My self and my Uncle agreed, we both drink martinis dry. I told the waitress. She rolled her eyes and said sorry the owner is bartending. The owner then complained to her that we were being too picky. The drink was obviously made wrong and prob should have been compd after that debacle. Instead we pay full Kettle One price for the martini and 280 dollars for the rest and leave. My family and i were all adults at the table and came to celebrate my uncles b-day at takanami. The waitress got her 20% as she deserved. The owner is an problem. Sorry to say i helped pay his rent that month.

I ordered over the phone, stating that I wanted to eat in the restaurant (just needed to cut the wait time). When I got there, the food was in a styrofoam box. Okay, so I went outside to eat it. The tuna from the bento lunch I ordered was sour. I wasnt sure if that was okay or not, so I asked one of the waitresses. She told me it wasnt supposed to be sour, and then walked away. I ended up not eating the rest of the tuna, but did not get any sort of apology or any offer to add something else to the meal. Disappointing. I have visited Takanami several times in the past though, and though the food is a bit pricey, I liked it enough to return. Perhaps this was a one-time thing, which is why I rated 2 instead of 1 star. If this had not happened, I probably would have rated a 3 or a 4.

Would never take a large group there. Took a 24 person bachelor party and service was slow, food delivered cold, guests had to ask multiple times for the same drink order cause it was forgotten. Recommend this place to the groom because of a prior good experience. Was completely disappointed with this place and embarrassed to bring this group there. Ordered the $27 Kobe beef meal which might have been good had it not sat on another table in the room for ten minutes while the waitress figured things out, my red wine reduction sauce? Stuck to the plate it had dried out so much. The potatoes held a little warmness cause its a starch item, thatt it. This place is too expensive to be delivering cold food to tables. Its typical of Iowa City downtown food though, big ideas, crap service.

Signed up for "the club" while I was at this restaurant because the sign up sheet stated that if we signed up we would receive $10 off the next purchase of $50 or more. This was great since we ate there all the time. Upon the next visit we presented the membership card and expected our $10 off. When we did not receive the discount we asked to speak to a manager. We were then approached by a server who was also supposedly the manager who simply stated that they were not the providers of "the club". Regardless of whether they are the providers or not of the service, they still advertise it and use it as advertising. They would rather lose me as a customer that spent $60+ per week than give me the $10 off one time that I was promised. Food is amazing though, I suggest take-out.

I have been there at 4:55 P.M and the restaurant is not open until 5, so we have to wait for 5 minute. The decoration of the restaurant is not similar with the sushi restaurant in China, and you can’t tell it is a Japanese restaurant if only look from outside. The other thing surprises me that they don’t have a conveyer which you can found in almost every sushi restaurant in Japan and China. We have ordered several different sushis, and it taste awesome, not much different which what I have in China expect for I have a hard time to understand the Menu…..

Ive eaten at Takanami a few time before and was really pleased. Their bento boxes are usually exceptional. But the last time I ate there the service was awful.. not just bad but awful. My soup spoon was dirty and I acctuually had to hunt somone down to get another spoon. But the worst part was when they brough out my entree and there were bugs in my rice, more than one. I asked to speak with the manager and he basicaly treated it like it was no big deal. So I wont be eating there again.

Bad service, took a long time to just get the drink orders when there were only two other tables. Took a long time to get our food ordered, then a long time for the food. Quality was below average for the price. The table was sticky... felt like I was at a cheap restaurant. Servers do not even pour customers water. Flies were flying in the restaurant... Overall, I dont recommend it, especially considering Iowa City has other sushi places we can go to.

Takanami used to be realiable, but not the other day. I ordered the Kobe Beef Tenderloin medium rare and it came well done. The balsamic reduction was awful, not just awulf but inedible. The accompanying red wine concoction tasted of nothing. However the potatoes were tasty and the mushrooms were good. They also messed up a roll on completely. It was disappointing to say the least. I wouldnt go back.

Takanami has a cool ambiance and their entrees are delicious, but their sushi quality is going downhill. Dont know what happened, it used to be one of the better places in town, but recently Ive found fish bones in my rolls and known people who have gotten sick from the food. Plus, their service is consistenly getting worse. College students need to work on being friendly and attentive.

Our food took forever even though we ordered off their special happy hour menu. The sushi is mostly rice. We were never provided napkins, not even for our appetizer. My martini was a warm purée both times and the draft beer was flat. Service could be more friendly, especially when visiting from out of town. Will definitely be visiting Formosa for sushi next time.

Takanami was the first place Ive ever tried sushi in my life. And I must say, for the first time, the impression was EXCELLENT. They have the most delicious sushi I have ever tried. I love the Salmon tempura rolls, spice crab, Godzilla rolls, Bento box scallops, shrimp and Salmon etc. Oh their salad with the brown dressing mmmm good. :)

After two experiences here, I would rather get sushi somewhere else. Takanami is wonderfully decorated and usually has good service. However the sushi is just slightly above average and very pricy. Probably the best option for sushi in downtown Iowa City, sadly.

Whether you stop by for a quick lunch break or dine in on a Saturday night for fun you will enjoy the calm atmosphere and appealing food. I recommend trying the steak or chicken Teppan but you might want to get some sushi on the side also.
