I was in the mood for catfish nuggets and wings so I looked up what’s local in Evanston while visiting a client. The Evanston Chicken Shack came up so I thought I would give it a try after reading several great reviews that outweighed the negative. I’ve had some great catfish nugget and wing dinners so I couldn’t wait to compare. Unfortunately I have to give a low review because the ECS was just mediocre at best. I’ll start with the positives. Luckily during my visit it wasn’t packed so the food came out fast and hot. The staff wasn’t rude but I wouldn’t exactly call them super friendly either. So now we move on to the negatives. The menu seemed to be all over the place so unless you know exactly what you want it could take a minute. I usually don’t pay more than $9 to $11 for a catfish and wing dinner. Today I paid $13.57. That would have been ok but my portion was less than any of the other places I frequent. The fries had ZERO seasoning so just pretty flavorless. Your food is packed in a box with the fries on top so that is the first thing you will taste. I grabbed a catfish nugget and the taste wasn’t bad, just not mouthwatering. I ordered mild sauce on the side for my wings. All I can say is that I have never tasted a sauce this bad. It was thick like BBQ but with a very strange taste. Most people won’t eat the bread but if you do like yours it will be smashed and buried at the bottom of the pile. To sum things up, this is NOT the best chicken in Chicago and if it is in Evanston then they better pray nobody opens up a JJ’s Fish or Babba’s nearby.

I had this place once before maybe twice after having drinks. I had the chicken and it was pretty good but now I am a pescetarian and gave them another shot. Bad idea. First let me state this place is falsely advertising their seafood portions I bought their combo which consisted of 2pc tilapia and shrimp. So u was expecting 2 pieces of Tilapia fillets and shrimp. What they do is take 1 tilapia fillet and cut it in half and call it a 2pc tilapia fillet. That is definitely false advertisement. Will be reporting them to the city of Evanston tomorrow because I drove from Chicago and by the time I saw what theyd done they were already closed. Their sauce taste like it is poured from a bottle maybe kc masterpiece or something along those lines very salty. The biscuits were not good, a waste of another 2.18. Fries are soggy and now that I think about it the fish was kind of undercooked as well. I would recommend a Chicago place like sharks or whatever you can find on Howard street including the fish keg before I recommend the place for seafood and the fish keg is the worst place to get seafood from in Chicago in my opinion.

These are some of the best fried chicken in Evanston. Always piping hot and crispy. Their biscuits and gravy and mashed potatoes are pretty good too, though I wished they gave more gravy. Theyre open late into the night, making it a good choice after a night of debauchery. This place is popular at night and there can be long lines and wait times but I think its worth it. There isnt a lot of seating to dine in, so be prepared to do takeout.

Not a huge fan, chicken is juicy, but tends to lack flavor. The breading tends to have pockets that contain lumps of salt and pepper - this makes the flavoring inconsistent. Fries are okay, the lack of coleslaw included in an order is disappointing. I know others that make this a weekly trip across Evanston to partake in they enjoy it so much. So you may end up a fan like them.

Best food in Town! I dont understand why people can complain about having to wait for food thats specifically being made for you! Its not already sitting there under a hot lamp when you walk in. Made to order, you cant go wrong with that! Sure its a wait but you can obviously call ahead of time and itll all be ready when you pick it up or get it delivered! LOVE this place!

Really tasty, freshly cooked fried chicken. Big portions of chicken and super juicy! The sauces are amazing. -1 star for the fries; i think they are just frozen fries, nothing special. Some chicken salt on the fries would also be great. Overall, a homely vibe and easily the best fried chicken in Evanston!

Chicken Shack has the best fried chicken in Evanston and probably in all of the Chicago area. Call ahead or order on arrival to get it to go. There are even a couple tables inside if you want to eat immediately. The catfish and cod are also outstanding, and you can get wings, giblets, or shrimp, too.

When I get married, I want to order a couple thousand of your perfectly delicious chicken tenders and sweet heat tossed boneless wings. I feel like the luckiest guy in the world having you guys right across the street from my house. NEVER CHANGE! YALL ARE THE BEST!!

Not the best interior, but just call ahead of time and get it to go. The chicken is awesome, but the fries that come with the meals by default arent. Best to spend the extra $1 for mashed potatoes and a biscuit.

This is a no nonsense, no frills chicken place; the name is perfect. They serve more than just chicken, but the chickenis where they shine. Not the friendliest of staff, but not rude either.

Delicious home style fried chicken. Perfect amounts of grease, crispiness, and flavor. A hint of pepper really puts these over the top. Probably the best fried chicken Ive ever had.

The chicken and fries are missing flavor. The wait is typically pretty long when no one is in there. I try to support small businesses but this place just wasnt worth it.

Chicken is always cooked Fresh and taste good. They give you a lot with the combos. Just wish they were open later on the weekend. My second best favorite after Harolds.

Food was great. doesnt take long to get, though Id still recommend ordering in advance. Very little seating only because, as the name implies, Its a shack.

This is a gem of Evanston when you want some late night takeout. You get enough food for 2 with the meal for a low price.

Terrible customer service. Rude and angry cashiers. Not sure how safe the food is. Ive seen the attendants spit in orders.
