I think Im a victim of this place being over-hyped. There are some strong points, but there are definitely some better BBQ options in the city. We drove up here on a Saturday evening for dinner and were able to find parking in the neighborhood. We had a party of four and faced about a thirty minute wait, which wasnt terrible. Rubs is BYOB, so we went to the liquor store across the street and sipped on some beers while we waited. Upon being seated, we quickly glanced at the menu and decided to order a variety of items to share. The pulled pork out-shined the brisket, it luckily wasnt dry and had a nice smoky flavor. The brisket was a little tough and chewy, which was disappointing. The custard cornbread was uniquely delicious, and Id recommend trying this. The truffle mac and cheese was overpoweringly truffle, which was off putting to our group. The beans and coleslaw were good, but nothing was super memorable. I wouldnt go out of my way to go back here, as there are better options in the city (Green Street Meats, Smoque, Smoke Daddy), but its a great addition to the Rogers Park neighborhood.

This review is for a take-out order on a Saturday night. When we got home with two salads (plus $2 added chicken), a half-rack of ribs, two truffled mac n cheese orders and a root beer, I realized how generous the portions were. Especially for the chicken that came (on the side) for the salad, seemed like a quarter pound in its own right. The owner really knows his BBQ! Our smoked items (chicken and ribs) were superb in flavor and moistness. But so were the salad and the mac n cheese - this joint is about all the food, not just the smoked items. The house-brewed root beer is strong and rich too. However, Im knocking off a star for these reasons: 1) Two hours before closing on a Saturday, they were already out of pulled pork and brisket. Ill have to try those another time. 2) The online menus prices have not been adjusted to match the stores prices, so the bill was slightly higher than I expected. 3) After we got home, I realized that we did not get the two custard-stuffed cornbreads that I had ordered (and paid for).

I went there today and it was ok. 3 stars to balance it all out is fair. The brisket is great and they give it to you sans barbaque sauce. The 3 sauces that they have are mediocre. They have a ketchup based sauce, mustard based sauce and a black strap molasses based sauce. I would definitely recommend bringing your own barbaque sauce. They dont serve fries but chips instead. They get the chips delivered from another place but then they smoke the chips. Smoking potato chips added a weird taste to it. I didnt like them nor did my kids like the potato chips. To have kids not liking potato chips is a big thing. Now the deserts are another story. They are of great quality. I had a huge oven baked cookie with ice cream on it. My wife had a nice sized peach cobbler and my son had ice cream. A side note on the ice cream. They dont scoop it out of a container. They plop it out of a sandwich bag. Very different. Over management/ micro management on on serving size I would guess. I would go again but I would bring my own sauce.

I try and be positive in my reviews. But since Rub has opened, they have been nothing but a bad tenant. This place has no consideration for the neighborhood. Please Do NOT patronize. Their food is fine. That cornbread is AMAZING. The Mac and Cheese - out of this world. However, Rub, and its employees use the back alley as a dumping ground for their grease. They will empty their sauces into the alley and just hose it down, leaving a foul vinegar scent in the air. They block the alley for extended times with their wood supply trucks, making it impossible to get to your garage or even your entrance door. Currently, they are running a smoker, in their garage, stinking up the neighborhood and everyones home. Calling them, they do not even answer their phone. They are inconsiderate, rude, and not worthy of even 1 star. (I upped this review to 2 stars because the owner responded quickly to the smoker issue. Hopefully it will get better.)

Just ordered after I got really excited seeing this place delivering to me on grubhub. way way way over hyped. I was so excited after reading great reviews but now i have to question how well people know good bbq. Brisket and Pulled pork did not taste fresh . more like they wre microwaved from the night before or something. For a place called Rubs I expected some amazing flavor but both meats were flavorless and obviously not seasoned at all (back to the microwaved theory) the brisket was about 65% fat ... and i know brisket needs some but it should be edible same with ribs. better flavor but almost no meat all fat. some generic chips . Overall very sad excuse for bbq. Will not waste money here again... Save yourself the money and check out Smoque or Qbbq both well worth the money and truly outstanding places to grab DELICIOUS bbq

Michelin! Michelin! Michelin! Clearly Rubs is in the running for a Michelin bib gourmand award. The chef shows commitment to every authentic homemade component, every detail, and adds an original spin. The meat is so succulent, so moist and juicy, so liberally adorned with burnt-end char, its transcendent. Knock down, drag out, the best barbecue Ive ever eaten. The service is Michelin quality, with the servers and staff who are knowledgable and primed about each dish, its origin and unique spin. The servers will even talk about their original sodas including a sasparilla or ginger root infused sparkling sweet soda made from a local herb purveyor. I was so blown away with the quality that I held my napkin up to cover my face as I wept. Myron Mixon, take note.

Went here last night because my girlfriend loves her some bbq. Its inconveniently located for me, but we went anyway. Southern state flags hang on the walls, and there are cute benches to sit on. BYOB, so that was a big plus. We ordered the full rack of ribs and cornbread and mac n cheese. The cornbread is my FAVORITE cornbread in the world. Its full of a custard thing. SO GOOD. The ribs were also excellent, but oddly very straight and manicured looking,. Still delicious. The mac n cheese was good too, but not as good as the cornbread. The service was good, and theres outdoor seating. Overall, Id go back if I had access to a car and Id recommend it.

Legit bbq. ribs are some of the best around, maybe the best on the north side. Tender, flavorful, and dont need any sauce. The smoked sausages are also excellent, moist, snappy, and with a black pepper kick. Pulled pork and chicken are also surprisingly good, lots of flavor and a good texture. Sides are a bit sparse but the baked beans are solid and the cornbread has a unique, corn pudding texture. Plates come with smoked potato chips, which werent my favorite thing, but they were also free. The smell when you walk in the door tells the whole story, this place is a true bbq destination and should be on everyones short list.

This is the best BBQ in Chicago. The food is great, the sides are great, its inexpensive; its all just great. But be on the lookout for their LivingSocial / Groupon deals on BBQ classes. So awesome! You get the story of how the owner went from "just a guy" who loved making BBQ to the funny story of first opening the store to the great store they have today. You get very interesting firsthand lessons on how to properly prepare, monitor, smoke and cook different cuts of meat. AND its a BYOB class so you can be sipping on suds the who time...and you eat the BBQ that the class makes afterwards. Its so good!
