I am so embarrassed for suggesting South City Kitchen to host my sisters birthday dinner. It was an unpleasant experience and they completely ruined her birthday. To make a long story short, we brought in a cake to celebrate my sisters birthday and they charged us a cake cutting fee, which was absolutely fine. But what was not fine was the staff helping themselves to the rest of the cake my sister actually made for herself, she bakes amazing cakes. For South City Kitchen to consider themselves a fine dining restaurant their staff is not up to that standard. Rather, they are greedy and unprofessional. The best the manager said he could do was wave the $20 cake cutting fee. I asked our waitress was it normal for them to take it upon their selves to partake in their customers cakes like this, and her reply was we usually wait until they leave it behind. We wouldnt have mind sharing at all if they would have just asked, especially because my sister already promised the leftover cake to a friend. People not only go to restaurants for good food but also an enjoyable experience, and South City did not deliver this evening. Hopefully, they can get it together for your visit if you decide to dine there.

My husband and I had our Valentines brunch at SCK this morning and we were both very impressed. The ambiance was great and, while they were very busy, we were seated right when we walked in (we did have reservations and I would highly recommend having them, even when its not Valentines). Gerard, our waiter, was so friendly and welcoming, but at the same time, very professional. We ordered the fried green tomatoes to start and they were phenomenal! The tomato slices are fried with goat cheese and that little extra touch really took it to the next level. My husband asked Gerard to help him decide between the chicken and waffles and the crab cake hash. While he acknowledged that both were excellent, he suggested getting the crab cake hash because it wasnt guaranteed to be on the menu forever, whereas the chicken and waffles was a staple. As a former waitress, I was highly impressed at his skills - he just insured that we would be back at least one more time! So my husband ordered the hash and was not disappointed. I ordered the shrimp and grits and they were out of this world. We will definitely go back for brunch and were hoping to make it for dinner one night too! Very impressed.

We had some out of town guests nearby and decided to introduce them to some good southern food. One had come all the way from Russia, and after being in a conference room all day we knew we needed something special to impress him. We started in on the pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, and the gouda fritters in a honey sauce. All were excellent, and our Russian friend scarfed down the fritters like they were gumdrops. The crispy fritters with that not-too-sweet sauce are really addictive. (mouth watering as I type...) At the suggestion of our waitress, who was really attentive and informative when we needed her and unobtrusive when we didnt, we ordered the pork chop special across the board, except for one order of the trout. The chops were meltingly tender and perfectly cooked--all juicy inside and charred on the outside. It was so big I had to box some up for home, and I rarely do that. Especially when its as good as that. Our Russian friend finished his chop and gnawed on the bone. Im now convinced that SSCs chops could be instrumental in improving Russian-American relations. We had no room for dessert, but Im sure it would have been great. I love this place.

Have a look at the 2 person booths next time youre here. Plenty of room except for your feet b/c of the large metal table base which makes for an uncmfortable brunch. I bet the owners have never sat at these tables....ok enough about that...fried green tomato dish was below avergae, masked in too much cheese, and sauce...wheres the tomato? Starter basket of muffins/ bisc.,, a dab of jelly wouldve been nice, Crab cake with a mention of pepper jelly on the menu.....pepper jelly nowhere to be found in the whole dish.....gave me the feeling the menu writer did the best job of anyone there...the actual food was seriously lacking though....eggs benedict came out with the poached eggs tasting like hard boiled aggs, and i mean hard....no effort, poor execution...on top of a butter soaked muffin, what a poorly done brunch. The staff was fine other than the manager who came over and said "brunch is great right?" before quickly moving on to the next table before we had a chance to comment. After a few visits, this restaurant must be surviving on name alone, b/c food is not worth a retun visit in my opinion.

Food was good and our server, Kevin, was excellent. Really passionate, knowledgeable about the menu and made some great recommendations. Sadly, I have to drop two stars for the following two reasons: 1) Noise. I was expecting a quieter place. The noise levels were very high, and it wasnt the music (which was playing at low volume). It was the chatter, the people. Possibly caused by the architectural layout. I had to shout to talk with my dinner guest at a small table in a corner and once home I noticed that my ears were ringing. 2) Price. The prices at this establishment were close to those found in places like Canoe. I am ok with spending $100+ on dinner (without even drinking) on special occasions, but this was no "Canoe" experience. Dont let the two above points discourage you. After all, food and service were good.

We were welcomed and seated quickly per our reservations. A lovely young lady took our drink order and gave us suggestions for the varied entrees and appetizers. She told me the best thing in the place was the fried chicken. She wasnt lying. It was so good I didnt want to stop eating.. From appetizer to dessert the meal was a great success. Besides the fried chicken, we tried the scallops and the deep fried gouda. My son had the shrimp and grits, no complaints. My daughter in law had the duck special and it was indeed special enough to take home what she couldnt finish. My husband had the catfish and it was coked to perfection. The service was outstanding and we had a very enjoyable dinner.

It was a birthday party for 30 people service was not good and the servers were so rude one had the nerve to try and call out one of our guest, by saying there card was declined, very loud and rude but he swiped her card three times then he was adding other tickets to her card and then he would cancel the transaction then it started declining card. The service was very bad. And then on top of it all gratuity was added on so we tipped them to be treated like we were not important and the best thing of all it took them a hour and a half to get the checks right. Worst service food OK took long time.

The food, drinks, and service are fantastic. The menu changes frequently but always has interesting options. The only downside is that its nearly impossible to have a conversation in the dining room because of all of the noise. All of the hard surfaces make conversations carry to everywhere else in the dining area creating a very loud white noise that drowns out the ability to hear the other people you are with. This in turn raises the volume that you must speak to be heard, which compounds the problem.
