So, Im going to start off by saying that Ive been in a restaurant setting since I was a little girl. I am also a local waitress at a neighboring restaurant and fully believe that the customer comes first, (even though all who have been in the service industry know that this is not always the case, especially when its complaints about petty problems). My boyfriend and I used to be regulars at the bar, because of one bartender that we absolutely LOVED, he was phenomenal each and every visit and we usually only swing around when he was working just because he was on top of everything each and every visit. However, about a month ago was our LAST visit to the establishment and it will remain that way. It was a Saturday night and the bar area was full, although loving the food we decided to try inside for a change. Our waitress was nice upstairs but we were seated right next to the staircase and felt claustrophobic so we moved outside to a table. The service we received was HORRIBLE my boyfriend had ordered a double whiskey neat when we were re-seated. He finished the drink, and we both watched as our server clearly not very busy stared at us from the computer with my lemonade and his alchohol empty. For 20 minutes our glasses remained empty. We understood that it was busy Saturday night and we are both experienced in the food industry as we are both servers with a few years of it under our belts at that. My lemonade was replenished while it took roughly another 10 for her to even offer him another drink. Our food then came out, and halfway through I got up to use the bathroom while my boyfriend had given up on our server for drinks and started a tab at the bar.knowing that we both would be gone for MAYBE four minutes, We left a note on the table explaining wed be back shortly and that we were still here. and returned to find our table cleared of all food, the server without a word handed my boyfriend the check and walked away. We then called over a manager and explained the scenario that we had just endured, stating that no, we werent looking for a discount or refund, but instead wanted to inform him of the nights events so that these issues, for other customers sakes werent repeated in the future, he half heartedly apologized, as we both knew it went in one ear and out the other. We have NEVER complained to a manager because we both know how much that sucks as a server, but the service was so bad we felt almost obligated to. Then we traveled to the outdoor bar where we sat and were talking to another cool bartender about the nights events, when a shorter man in a fedora approached us (by the name of memo I think?) and interjected obnoxiously to us,"well yeah? If you hate this place so much why the hell do you keep coming back?" Baffled and slightly amused at this point we looked at him, shocked, thinking that this guy cant be serious. He continued to them direct his atrocious attitude to me and said ,"so where do you work?" I replied with the name of my restaurant and this man, a manager said "never f**** heard of it." We had had enough of the entire restaurant at this point, and we have never been talked to so rudely, nor would I ever have a service industry job again if I EVER talked to a customer this way. We picked our stuff up to leave, not wanting to fuel his attitude further as he called after me, 20 feet away from the bar, "let me know when you want to leave that restaurant of yours". Enraged, we walked home never to return again. NEVER will I recommend any of my tables to this restaurant again as I did before, I fact I share my experience quite often. Ive even talked to locals who have had similar experiences, absolutely no locals I know come here, and obviously for good reason.

I was very disappointed from the beginning to the end. There were many favorable reviews, so I thought we had a safe bet and couldnt go wrong. On entering the establishment, I saw that it was a beautiful old house, I was excited for a pleasant experience. The problems started with being supplied the breakfast menus at 3:30PM. It looked as if they just had a very small menu, but I overheard people ordering items that werent on our menu. I asked the server if there was another menu, and she seemed put-out to have to get us the lunch menus. As the meal progressed, I learned that she was put-out about most things (request for water, splitting the check in two for a party of 6, etc). Every request came with an attitude. One of my favorite issues the server had was when we wanted to share an order of Tacos, she insisted that it was a minimum of three tacos per person (at $7.00 each). I explained that I wanted to order three tacos, but my daughter only wanted an appraiser. She seemed frustrated that we each werent going to order $21.00 worth of Tacos. The prices for were very high for the mediocre food, and a 20% tip was included (Hence the issue with sharing a meal). I always tip at least 20%, but this service was very sub-par. Sadly, not one part of the experience was enjoyable.

I have never negatively reviewed a restaurant before, but this is the first time I really feel its necessary. I was with a party of seven. Three were already at Casa Maya and the four of us were meeting there. Since the tables were only 4-tops, we sat down at the table with them and were planning on splitting multiple pitchers of Sangria. When the server came out she told us with major attitude, "youre only supposed to sit at the bar if you need going to order drinks and appetizers". Our friends who arrived prior to us with drinks and apps already on the table told her that they were only going to order drinks and apps. The server said "well that different, you were already here." I should preface this by saying were not from St. Augustine, so we werent aware of their "rules", however there was no need for the nasty behavior of the waitress. We all used to be servers back in our college days. She would have been tipped about 40%, but instead the second half of our party walked out before even ordering. In retrospect I really wish we would have asked for the manager, but we decided not to ruin the rest of our day. There are many great restaurants in this area, so we will not be going back to the Casa Maya.

We went on 1/1/2016 for dinner with a party of 7. One of few places there had no wait so we went right in. Let me start out with the atmosphere, we sat outside in the back and it was a as expected, a great area to eat, though the actual seats werent too comfortable. Secondly the service was about average filled our drinks only once even though a few of us sat with empty glasses the second time around. The food was ok. We eat Mexican all the time and my wife grew up in Southern California and her family makes a lot of Mexican dishes, so I would say it was about average for a cheap Mexican restaurant. Lastly is the pricing, the main reason I would not recommend this place to anyone going to St Augustine. Most dishes were over $20, with the portions being small. The kids meals were even small as they brought the rice and beans in a tiny plastic container that you would put ketchup in, not justified for $10. We had the same quality food for a lot cheaper the day before, just around the corner at Fridas.
