I dont know why all the bad reviews. Ive lived in Germany as a child, visited all over there several times and eat German cooking at home regularly. I thought it was excellent. The schnitzel sandwich was a novel dish for me, but it was tasty. The potato salad was delicious. And the bread was wonderful. I took a Frankenlaib home with me and my German mother raved about it. The pastries were perfect... just like German pastries, not too sweet. All in all a wonderful experience and I would return there whenever I am in Orlando again and have the opportunity. For those German critics (and isnt that typically German?) I would ask how many German bakeries they know of in Florida? Or how easy it is to find authentic German food in their city? For me it was a refreshing spot for a delicious lunch. I would highly recommend it. And dont be so critical, unless you yourself are a German baker and run a deli.

As a German that is always looking to try some authentic food, I was happy to see the reviews for this bakery and had to try it out. We got the Schnitzel roll platter, the schnitzel was warmed up in the microwave (it was still very cold in some spots) and the german potato salad was overpowered by onions and had no hint of vinegar. The poppy seed streusel was not baked all the way, there was a spot on there that looked like raw egg white. The pretzel bun was tasteless. The only thing that was decent was the landjaeger (sausage) and the onion loaf. But the prices are definitely way too high. I cant recommend this for anyone that is truly looking for authentic food. And will definitely not go back there.

Pastry Heaven! Real Hearty Breads. Select German meats, sausages, and Deli items. The German Potato Salad is SOOOOO Delicious. No seating, but the park across the street has some benches, and the view of Lake Ivanhoe is Spectacular. The very Pleasant Staff here is knowledgeable about all the breads and pastries, and have even taught me a few words of German! This Shop is located In Swanson’s Ivanhoe Row, which includes an Art Gallery, Custom Jeweler, Womans Clothing shop, Mens clothing shop, Wine shop, Beauty Shop, Specialty Stationary/Gift shop, and a new Kombucha Brewery. I come on most Saturdays and enjoy strolling along this stretch of The City Beautiful, its really a "Hidden Gem"!

Im still being hopeful that quality will return. However, we now had TWO separate occasions of stale and bad pastries. 1st one occurred in May of this year, we bought 10-15 different pastries, on most of them almonds had a stale taste. 2nd occasion took place this week: tiramisu cake: the icing was tasteful but lady fingers cookies were bad (mold&stale, discussing), almost pastry was great unlike last time, but almonds on square-puffy pastry were also stale. In the past weve had purchased pastries and whole cakes and they were great, but this year the bakery has only given us disappointment :(

Backhaus is a fantastic find that surpasses any other domestic German bakery that I have visited for variety - quallity and taste. When I take my treasures home my husband and I always reminisce about our visits to Austria and Germany because we just truly love the taste of these baked goods. While I am basically a Manhattanite - I can tell you that New York German bakeries have nothing on Backhaus and they even created a baked treat for our dogs - how good is that?

I enjoy coming here, I always have a veggie sandwich. It is nothing fancy but good and takes care of my hunger. The desserts are quite delicious so I make sure I sneak in one of those too. I also simply enjoy the fact that Im inside another European comrades cafe . You can sense the cultural differences in terms of hospitality but as a European, it doesnt bother me. Americans though could find it a bit stiff in here

Being a German immigrant, I appreciate good German food. German Backhaus has the best Bratwurst, meat spreads, and baked goods. I love it. Especially enjoy the fine Bratwurst and the Jagerwurst as well as the Tea spreads and Liverwurst. Dont forget to pick up Brotchen to have with the Bratwurst like they do in Germany.

First time here. For the bologna, mustard, pickle, and pretzel roll sandwich. Super tasty! Bought a couple small loaves of bread from the day before. They happened to be half off, which I could only guess is the norm for this place. Drove right past it and the flag caught my eye and I knew I had to stop. Will return!

I bought a Rye Batard and a Frankenlaib. It has a really good look and it tasts quite well, much better than what you can buy in most super markets. But the firmness in particular is still far away from a real german bread. It is still kind of fluffy. It didnt fulfill my goal to be an alternative to self baking.

Im a pretty picky about bakeries, and i havent been pleased with all of the other bakeries in central Florida that Ive tried, so I was surprised to finally find a bakery to make me happy. Its an hour drive from me, but well worth the treat when Im close to Orlando or someone else can buy it and being it to me.

Wem eine Sehnsucht nach den Deutschen Brötchen/Broten hat, soll auf jeden Fall hierher finden. Sehr nette Leute, wir kommen irgendwann wieder!

Great little local spot. Perfect place to grab a coffee and home-made pastry on the way into downtown in the AM. Cool location right on Lake Ivanhoe with lots of charm. Owner is usually there and always has a smile on her face and happy to see you. Always nice to have spots like these around!

Always a lovely experience! Large selection of pastries and breads. There are several meat / sausage options as well. They offer sandwiches to-go and day old bread selections. Be ware that they often sell out of breads, especially on the weekend. I recommend going earlier in the day.

Very small German deli BUT very nice. This place has 2 bakery cases with German desserts , fresh made breads, a deli case with German meats and some German grocery foods. I will be back again. Not like Epcot.

Staff is very nice. Bread is stale and should be sold as day old. Even freezing doesnt change the day old staleness. Seems like an Orlando tourist trap. Ill make the extra trip to the real German Bakery.

I havent tried their pastries, but it looks yummy. Small shop. The workers here arent too friendly unless I you buy something I am sure. They also have some specialty German stuff that they didnt bake.
