Wow! If I had to finally say that there was a restaurant that shocked me (and it takes a lot) on being the rudest and worst guest service in history, I located them tonight in Shell Beach, California. RESTAURANT NAME: Spyglass Restaurant! For 13 years now, my partner and I celbrate his birthday by me surprising him with dinner at a restaurant near where we live. Weve had some wonderful dinners, The Cliffs, Seaventure, Cafe Roma, just to name a few. Tonight I chose a place I had never been, Spyglass. What a huge mistake. I called and made a reservation and the young lady was very pleasant. Reservation was at 7:30 pm. I was running late after work so I told my partner to go in and have a glass of wine. I got there at 7:45 pm and he came out to me and said he wanted to warn me that the service wasnt great as he over heard someone telling another guest that they were short staffed and that they were busy. Another huge mistake. You never tell the guest why youre excusing your poor service. You make it work. I walked in right passed the paramedics as it seemed a lady was having issues breathing. The staff was working and it seemed they had turned this issue over to the paramedics. So I stood with my guy at the "wait to be seated area" and waited and waited and my man tells me at this point that they hadnt acknowledged him the entire 15 minutes he waiting for me. I saw a Hispanic manager and gal with purple hair in a heated discussion and I finally spoke up and said, "Hello?" No one answered. Im thinking Im being punked at this point. So I said it again, "Hello?" (This is where I get my rating as the worst guest service of my life.). The manager guy turned and glanced for less than a second then turned back away from us and to top it off, the purple haired waitress turns to me and I quote, as she literally yelled at me in disgust, "You know what sir, will be with you shortly!" No smile, no apology , nothing! I told her to forget it we were going else where. Without a thought her and the manager carried on in conversation as we left.... To the Cliffs. Heres the part I am in still trying to figure out. I called at 10 pm and guess who answers? The male manager in blue. Im now giving him the opportunity to turn this into a positive. Ya think it happened? I told him who I was and what happened. At first he couldnt remember me. Im thinking, I walked out angry and you cant recall that event happening tonight? Wow! After I jogged his memory, he went on and told me he had only been there two weeks and that he had no clue what was going on and that he had paperwork to do for the paramedics the he blamed someone for scheduling and said they were understaffed ... I stopped him and said to him,"Sir not to be rude, but thats not my problem and I honestly dont care. All it would have taken was a simple, I will be with you in a moment... and we would have understood. But you ignored is And let your employee yell at me and let me walk out the door. ". He kept making excuses. He never once said Im sorry, we dropped the ball, what can I do to make this right, didnt even ask for my name to have some one call me to make it right. He was lost! He had a moment to make something awful into a prized guest whose never even been to your restaurant a happy person. To be honest, I could care how good the food is, how staffed you are, if the paramedics are there or the President for that matter, you made me feel like I was a piece of crap for walking in your door to spend a special occasion in our lives as something that was a nuisance to you because you couldnt do your job. That waitress had no business waiting on guests. Who yells at guests that had a reservation and 20 minutes later is still standing there waiting for a simple hello. Its a small town and a ton of other restaurants to choose from. You dont treat people like that. Its just not ok. I went somewhere else and was treated like royalty. I will never recommend your establishment, step foot in your restaurant and certainly will not speak highly of it.

I have been a customer of Spyglass Restaurant for the past 40 years. I have a group of about 20 friends who use Spyglass as a default place for lunch when they dont have appointments for someplace else. My friends include bankers, stockbrokers, retail store managers, retired military officers, anthropologists, farmers, lawyers, city managers, real estate developers and airline stewardesses. The point I am making here is that these are fairly prosperous people who have many options for where they go. My observation over the years is that, in addition to several of us who have regular lunches and cocktails here, I have observed many, many people who are regular customers that, in addition, plan their weddings, birthday parties and even memorial services here. This is a combination of decent food plus a staff that the regulars love and a location above the ocean that is hard to beat. We usually eat at the bar so service is outstanding. The food is O.K. but the total experience appeals to me and my friends.

Spyglass has one of the best views of the Pacific in Shell Beach and offers a decent amount of good breakfast and lunch options. If you want to dine outside and breathe the fresh salty ocean air (negative ions that are good for your body!), there is a patio with many tables where you are basically less than a hundred feet away from the ocean. For breakfast the omelettes are pretty good. The club sandwiches at lunch are my usual choice- chicken or turkey and they come layered in avocado, lettuce, tomato and three to four slices of bread which makes it impossible to eat at once. There is usually a substantial accompaniment of potatoes or fries- and at lunch I upgrade to garlic fries which are delicious. Its best to come here on a sunny day and bask in vitamin D- they also provide umbrellas if you need shade. But its hard to object to simple American comfort fare and a great view of the ocean!
