I dont understand how this restaurant could be getting such mediocre reviews. I LOVE the Mandarin Gourmet. It is hands down my favorite Chinese Food destination. It does tend to be a little pricier than other Chinese restaurants offering a similar level of service, but the food is exceptional, and well worth it. Their hot & sour soup is the standard by which I judge all others, and their sesame beef could induce a flavor revolution. It is, quite simply, perfect. Every time. I will grant that their wait staff may be a bit perfunctory, but then, English is not their first language (its always a good sign when the accents match the ethnicity of the cuisine) so I dont anticipate a stream of small talk, and they certainly arent rude, as others have suggested. In fact, I would probably go so far as to say that English cant even be their second language, because their first language is clearly TASTE, and they speak it fluently. I would highly recommend trying some of their more exotic dishes for a new flavor experience, like the dragon & phoenix (lobster and chicken in two different tangy sauces) or perhaps one of their upscale deserts, like the deep fried bananas. You probably wont find those in your neighborhood chow mein joint! If you are at all a fan of Chinese food, you would be doing yourself a disservice to pass up an easy chance to try the Mandarin.

Terrible food and terrible service. My husband and I came here for the first time after we saw the 4/5 stars review. If there was an option for negative stars I would choose that. The food beef brought out to us was raw, and there was no indication that the fried rice has peas or carrots in them on the menu, which my husband is allergic to. When we told the waiter, he has b reluctantly taking back the food to get it done right. When the bill came we decided not to leave a top since we were so poorly served and the hostess was rude to begin with. As we left politely , the waiter chased out after us saying that the $60 bill was not including top and that he demanded that we tipped him. My husband and I were appalled by the demand. He was shouting at ya in the middle of the parking lot saying that he would have taken what we didnt like off the bill. Mine you he had many opportunities to do so when he saw we barely touched the food because it was so disgusting. When my husband came back in to talk to the manager, she was rude and just said ok Ill talk to him later, and basically shooed my husband it the door. NEVER AGAIN.

I love the food here! Omg,seriously, its so good! Gorgeous gaisha painting at entrance Wall, but everything else from tables to chairs, theyre old (80s old, but thats "retro") FYI, no orange chicken but theyll try thier best to accomadate you. It wasnt great OC but my guest liked it. >>Just dont try any of their "lunch specials"(yucky cheap stuff made in huge batches and those sides are made Hours Prior). But go ahead and order any dinner items! Very good! Freshly made! Theyll give you a waiting time. But! Remember this! Order to go! They charge you a rediculous 8.00$ per person, FEE TO SIT/EAT IN THE RESTAURANT! Remember to tip too! ;) Hope this was informative and helpful.

This place never seems to disappoint, the food was delicious, the service friendly. I love to have General Tsos pan friend noodles, this dish makes a great sizzling sound when they add the sauce, meat, and vegetables. This is done right at your table, and tends to get the attention of other guests. You can be selective on what vegetables are in the dish, works out great if you dislike mushrooms like I do. I always add a serving of rice to the meal, as I feel its a necessity and is not included. The hot and sour soup is also a great addition on a rainy day. They serve a complimentary hot tea, with every meal.

Amazing restaurant. went here all the time when i was younger, and it was my go to place for my B-day. they have a nice selection of food (however i do miss the candy banana. think it might have been removed of the menu) i usually stick to my favorites but all of it tasted good. the hot and sour soup is really good, not to cluttered with stuff like other restaurants iv been to. you get free tea (or at least i always believed it was free) when you order. sometimes the rice can be a little dry, but id prefer that over sticky and its not something that would bother me that much.

Last night we had my birthday dinner here, (third time coming here) and it was amazing as always. This is, by far, the absolute best Chinese food Ive ever had! And it could quite possibly be the best food overall Ive had. I can hardly talk while I eat because each bite is so incredible. And I have yet to try anything I didnt love there. Sesame chicken, shrimp with honey glazed walnuts, green beans, fried rice, pan fried noodles, Mongolian beef, etc are all highly recommended. The only negative I have found is that they dont have Dr. Pepper. Thats it!

I used to love coming here as a kid. The food was always very good and the restaurant looked nice. However, the owners have failed to make any changes to the business. The decor is painfully dated and the menu doesnt seem to have ever been updated. I feel like a lot of the food now is just a meat or vegetable fried or roasted and tossed with a sauce. Its just not enjoyable even though I wish this place still was.

I dont know why there are so many negative reviews--some of which rather nonsensical. This place is great. I highly recommend their string beans, theyre the best Ive had at a Chinese restaurant. It is a touch on the pricy side, but its high quality food. And the restaurant, while the decor is very 80s, is well kept with friendly and efficient staff.

Our family loves this family-owned restaurant, and the speed at which dishes arrive after ordering is amazing! Our favorite dishes are the honey walnut prawns, Mandarin chow mein, prawn with black bean sauce, saute green beans and sesame beef. They also have a private room for large parties which we have used for many birthdays and anniversaries.

the moo shu pork was like burritos, large, heavy pancakes. The lemon chicken was floating in very yellow sauce little or no garnish. The walnuts in the prawns were black and the dish was not attractive. The steamed white rice left much to be desired. I had been there in the past and enjoyed the food. But I will not return.

Not worth it. We paid 37.00 for a lunch special, a plate of fried rice and string bean chicken. Oh and a soda. The string bean chicken was salty. The fried rice had a lot of egg, I like that but others didnt. I would pass on it for the price. The service was horrible. They just put the food down and go.

We have been going to the Mandarin Gourmet since the first day the opened (more than 20 years ago) and have never been disappointed. The food is the best Chinese food in San Jose and for many miles around. Scott (the owner) is always delightful and never forgets to welcome us with open arms.
