came here on christmas day and it was absolutely packed. we were vacationing in sf and didnt get a chance to make concrete plans/reservations for christmas, so we expected to have to wait. well the wait was 3 hours long... so we opted for take out from their to-go place. the options were a lot more limited, but it was better than nothing. i was surprised that xiao long bao wasnt on their menu, so when we saw the line at the bottom of the order sheet that said "special orders," we asked if we could get an order of the xlbs. the lady said sure and we paid for the order. while waiting, it occurred to me that the order seemed way more expensive than it should have been. we looked at the receipt and everything was slightly overpriced compared to what were used to in houstons chinatown, but still around $4-7 for each thing. however, the order of xlbs was $14! whatttt. dim sum orders are never more than $10. they should really be less than $5. we asked if it was a mistake and the lady said no. we figured maybe it was because we placed a special order, but no one had said anything about an additional fee. well, about 20 min later, we got our order. although there were no open tables in the actual restaurant or the few tables immediately outside the door, there was a giant food court-like area right in front of the restaurant that was completely empty. so we grabbed our food and ate it there. everything was average. especially the xlbs. all SIX of them. no idea what the people on yelp are raving about. and apparently, $14 was actually the normal price, even for dining in at the restaurant. absurd. other ive been to charge $2-7 for an even larger order of way better xlbs. half of the ones from yank sing didnt even have soup in them because they had leaked out. soo disappointing. :( skip this place and opt for one of the hundreds of other amazing food options in sf!

IF youre really interested in honest rating - this is a very good restaurant, and its prices ARE in line with what you get. It is pricey. It also has remarkably good dim sum. It is neat and clean, it is flashy and fast. Its waiters and waitresses upsell. So what. You can ALWAYS say, "no, thank you". They dont care. YANK SINGs biggest not-so-secret accomplishment is diversity in flavor. The dim-sum pieces taste different, not the same. The soy sauce (if you need it) is flavorful, not some dusty 3 year old sale-by-the-box from somewhere-indistinctly-in-China. The garlic-blackbean-chile sauce is world class. They make it by hand, and it is delish. GO WITH A FRIEND, so that you can share. The cost wont come down, but the diversity increases. Tables for 4 are the best. Just enough room, just enough diversity, no one gets stuck. And dont worry about all the "1 star" rantings. Price is a function of the square-of-quality. Its never "fair", but the formula also rarely varies. Yank-sing is pricey, very good food, quick and efficient. If youve never had it, just suck-it-in (budget), and give it a whirl. Forget the expense. Enjoy the special dim sum. And have the black-bean-chile sauce.

Ambient was nice and service was good. Egg custard was fresh and homemade. It was quite delicious. Unlike some restaurants who choose to buy factory egg custard s and other typical dim sum items that consume preparation time better reserved for bigger dishes like Singapore style curry noodles. Sesame ball was alright, crunchy but too thick inside which indicates the oil was not hot enough to fry the dough properly to create the air ideally needed to separate the outer dough from the filling. Prices were on the high side. Bathroom was a single stall at the end of a Hallway downstairs that look like backstage at some old theater company. Found myself a better dim sum place called city view which I actually want to check out again since I was so impressed with the flavor profile and cooking techniques. I did not get to see many carts on my visit to yank sing so I couldnt try the rest of its dishes but the ones I ate didnt inspire me to come back again, especially at those prices.

This would be 5 stars but I feel its overpriced for what it is. It isnt excessively fancy, and the food, while delicious, isnt gourmet. Despite all this youre lucky to pay less than $50 a head. The ambiance is upscaleish with nice decor but cheap tables and chairs and it is a fairly authentic dim sum experience. Everything is loaded in carts and wheeled around between the tables. The servers can be pushy so you need to be resolute when youve had enough dumplings. And man what dumplings. They are all good but the soup dumplings take the cake. The dumplings are filled with soup and a little nibblet of pork. Then the server showed us to put the pickled ginger and red wine vinegar on top. This resulted in an impressive flavor explosion when the vinegar mixed with the savory broth. The one thing I would warn against is the duck. Its over priced and not cooked very well. Other than that this place is delicious.

Bland, average dim sum at over inflated (double or triple) prices. Dont believe the reviews! Its a non-Asian dim sum place only. Very limited selection mainly catering to non-Asian or English speaking Asian population. You wont find rice rolls, tripe, omasum, squid, tendon, or many other staples here. Husband and I tried 4 dumpling dishes but none of them were memorable and the bill was almost $40. What you are really paying for is the excellent service, not food quality. The price would have been justifiable for Hong Kong quality dim sum, however, Yank Sing doesnt live up to the hype. Best dim sum in San Francisco? I would be very surprised. We could have had better tasting dim sum with larger portions for half the price back home in Vancouver, BC. Overall, very disappointed.

Yank Sing is a hot spot downtown during the lunch hour. It is always packed and there is always a wait. The food is fantastic, upscale dim sum. Go on the off times in the hope of getting a table a little bit faster. If youre looking to satisfy your deem sum and/or Chinese food craving but not spend a pretty penny, walk around the side to Yank Sing 2 Go and order off their lunch menu. There are plenty of options to choose from but I usually stick with the Yank Sing Mini which includes a Chicken Salad, two pot sitckers and a Spring Roll for $5.75 ($6.25 out the door!). The Phoenix is also fantastic and cheap ($6.80) for a Spring Roll, Pot Stickers (2), Siu Mye, Chow Mein and Fried Rice. I can never finish this meal! Go now!

Three stars for the price, four stars for the food, and five stars for the hostess. I dont remember the name of the hostess, but I have to admit she was the nicest and more cheerful hostess I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. If I were to guess her name, Id say it was Lily, but thats just what I picture in my head. Yank Sing is new to OpenTable, but its a miracle that a Dim Sum restaurant offers reservations. The soup dumplings deserve special mention, but all of the other dishes were good as well. The price was a little ridiculous considering we, a group of three, left $100+ lighter at the end of the meal. I would come here every week if it wasnt for the extreme dim sum prices.
