We arrived at this place at 8:30 on a night they closed at 9 and pretty much ordered immediately. They said the kitchen was getting ready to close but they could make our food which was to be served on a sizzling platter. We had a drink and appetizer an then the server brought out a bag with food to go and said"sorry the kitchen is closed so they made your food to go." We didnt even know if that meant the food was cooked or not. She said it was cooked but couldnt be served the way the menu said because the grill was closed. If the kitchen was closed how was the food cooked and what did that have to do with us eating it. Another woman who worked there and was there having a drink told us that the kitchen would probably be closing and make the food to go. Why didnt the person waiting on us let us know that. What a scam. Another couple came in to pick up food they had ordered over the phone and the order was incorrect because the kitchen closed even though they had called in plenty of time. We come up here once a year and have enjoyed their food but they just lost a customer.

If you are expecting a plate of steaming Chinese food piled high for a reasonable price you will be disappointed at Chinese City. The combo plates were a minimum of $15.00 per person and the menu items like Mongolian beef started at $12.00 and this was all that you got, no rice, no egg roll, no lo mein. Want to add rice? That will be another eleven bucks, thank you. To top it all off the only item that was particularly good was the Mongolian beef as the other 3 items we ordered were of the kind of quality you would expect from an all you can eat Chinese for $2.99. The sweet and sour chicken consisted of tiny pieces of chicken covered with too much breading, it was a 25/75 ratio of chicken to breading; disappointing. Good thing this place has a captive island audience as it would not survive on the mainland.

Great place! One of the very few Chinese fine dining experiences available these days. My favorite appetizers are salt and pepper squid (calamari) and salt and pepper pork chop. Lots of main dishes to choose from, and the veggies are incredible- especially broccoli in garlic sauce. The bar is a wood lovers dream, with a creaky wood plank floor, a retired judges bench behind the bar and unique carved table that usually sits by the fireplace. Their beer taps are constantly rotating with a wide variety of craft styles from stouts and porters to unfiltered wheats and IPAs. Theres also a. Second China City restaurant on the north end of the island in Oak Harbor (same owners) with amazing Buddhist décor tastefully placed throughout. Same great food.

Stopped in there while on business trip. Choice = Fail. The not so crappy fail. * Food was bland, somewhat cold and extra greasy * The service gave me the feeling that I was imposing on them when I asked them to bring stuff they forgot. * The wait staff had an air of entitlement about tips. * Drinks seemed watered down. * Staff seemed to be on work release from prison. The extra crappy fail. * Had sharp stomach pains in the middle of the night. * Had horrible, excruciating diarrhea. Would gladly recommend to any petro-dictator, BP executive, crooked Wall Street Banker, or dealer of conflict diamonds with a war crimes hobby.

Good food and atmosphere, just a little more expensive that the competition. China City is a family restaurant that serves primarily Chinese Food, but throws a little Thai and American in for flavor. The Happy Hour specials are awesome. If eating alone, or as a pair, I would highly recommend eating in the bar, and the atmosphere is more intimate, and if alone, you can usually keep yourself entertained talking to the bartender(s). China City is the place to be on Saturday Nights, as it is one of only two places open after 9pm on Saturday.

Been to China City in Freeland 3 times now - have tried the potstickers, pork bbq, chicken lettuce wrap, and chicken wing appetizers, along with the vegetable chicken and teriyaki chicken entrees -- the lettuce wrap and pork bbq were the only thing we could come close to finishing. Quality of food is very low, dont expect anything near what you would get on the mainland.

Family platter was not even close to the description shown on the menu. There was no BBQ pork and the plate was 4x7 for a family? The food was ok but way over priced for the servings. Besides, the online menu has different pricing for same dish so be aware. Stay in Langley downtown and enjoy the lunch there is the best option next time we visit the island.

Im surprised at how negative some of these reviews are. I live off island, but have spent a lot of time there and have been to China City at least six times, some of those visits coming around the same time as some of the negative reviews. Ive always been happy with the food and service and did not find the prices too high.

As far as asian cuisine is concerned on south whidbey island we much prefer Basil Cafe. The food at China city wasnt that great and the atmosphere was stark and uninviting. If you want a good local, down to earth family feel with great asian food I would suggest going to Basil Cafe.

Beautiful building in a location that is easy to see from the highway and easy to get in and out of the parking lot. great food, great patio with a covered smoking area, and lots of space inside so you dont feel like people are right on top of you when you are at your table.

Great happy hour and a good selection of bottled and draught beers. Sit in the bar and watch your favorite team or a more intimate experience in a cozy booth in the dinning room and enjoy eating an enormous selection of good Chinese food at very reasonable prices.

Dinner for three -- BBQ pork, chicken & snow peas, curry chicken!!!; mushrooms, snow peas, and water chestnuts (all warm, but still crispy), coconut shrimp, steamed rice, and a courteous and attentive wait person --- a great way to end the day. Thank you.

Great food for the price. I was actually surprised to see the prices which are definitely on the lower side for such a great ambience and service. The chicken schezuan was excel and so were the desserts. Must go if you are in the area!

This old mansion hosts a round steeple that can be spotted above the surrounding greenery and eastern sculptures. It will enchant you with its wonder. This is a unique experience; years later, you will feel a longing deep within you

Clean, roomy comfy booths, or the deck in the summer if very nice. The food is always good, my favorite is no longer on the menu but I can still order it (Sweet & Spicy Shrimp). I love the Shrimp Walnut, and the War WonTom soup.

It was just lunch for me, and a memory of previous visits with Dan. But CC is better than I remember. Fresh! Tasty! And, very sweet staff, Emily was very attentive and pleasant. Good visit to an old favorite.
