While vacationing in Berkeley, I ventured out to see and drink at some local pubs. I love, I mean LOVE Belgian beers in a very unhealthy way. When I found info on this place I knew I had to see it (and drink it) with my own eyes. I was impressed during my visit and I still had money to my name after I left. They had at least 100 bottle beers to choose from and over 25 rotating taps to pick from. They dont do big corporations here, they promote local (California) and U.S. specialty micro brews. I really liked two beers that the bartender recommend which were the St. Feuillien Triple and St. Bernardus Abt 12. Besides being a beer lover, I really enjoy history and this location really speaks to you. The front section of the bars decor apparently was modeled from a favorite Belgium/ Netherlands Victorian pub. It may sound scary or odd, but it really makes your drinking experience a tad more enjoyable.

Where does one go to eat after a half marathon? Anywhere with beer and pub food. My wonderful friends Richard and Judy K picked me up in SF and ferried me around Oakland and its environs and we decided on this place as our first stop. Its a nice-looking place, with dark wood and a comfortable, old-fashioned pub feel. It was fairly empty on a sleepy Sunday afternoon so we didnt have any problems getting a table. Their patio looked nice but it happened to be closed that afternoon--too bad. It was hard to choose from their array of beers, but I settled on Prairie Artisan Ales 3rd Anniversary Ale and the grilled cheese sandwich and deviled eggs--all excellent. The service was just OK, I felt, with one woman working out front and the occasional person coming out of the kitchen to bring us the food. Nonetheless, we had a nice time before setting off to our next destination.

Heres why I love The Trappist: I can drink something other than an IPA. They have a great selection of Belgian, German, Czech, and other beers from around the world that arent just all about hops. They have light and dark, burnt and sour, citrus and chocolate, and everything in-between. The beer menu changes frequently, but I can always find something that I like, and usually something that surprises me, too. I really dont like the strong hopped-styles that are so popular and prevalent in the bay area, so places like The Trappist are a refuge for me. Low IBUs forever! The food is also surprisingly good. One of the best reubens Ive had. Dont count it out. Youll have a great lunch here.

As a woman im always a little weary of going into bars that seem "masculine" but Ive gone in before with no trouble. I walked in today and there was no one at the bar just guys sitting at it. I waited for a moment but no one said anything so I left. Are you guys reallly open in the afternoon or is therr a break time that I dont know about? I had walked out of my way for this bar guess im backtracking yand having my beer at the pacific brewing company today and from now on. Side Note: walked into pacific coast brewing company immediately got served did not feel unwelcome at all. Will be certainly coming back here instead of trappist

Great place with two bars, tons of inside places to sit and an outside patio with ferry lights. Good service and great beer with few bites to eat. Would have preferred better options - solid mixed cheese and charcuterie platter seemed the way to go although tad expensive for my taste. We settled on IPA and Russian River Redemption accompanied by hummus plate and the mozzarella cheddar grilled sandwich although what I really wanted was the Ruben sandwich. Have to come back in the fall for that ;). Ah, of course, dont miss their Saturday brunch scene with grilled burgers on the patio. Woohoo!!!

Quite simply, the best beer bar in the Bay Area (and Ive been to pretty much all of them). Between the front and back bars, they always have several dozen rotating taps to choose from. The food is mostly bar bites, and a little pricey for what it is. The initiated will be sure to come on Tuesday evenings, when the Mexican place next door sells tacos and bean burritos in the back patio (cash only). Seriously, if you love good beer, this is the place to come. Its also within walking distance of Beer Revolution and the BART station if you want to make a day of it and not worry about driving.

Lucky me, my friend and his wife got there early (but also started early) and we got a table in the very back room. There was a total of 5 of us and we split a few big bottles. Were always making plans for our very elite groups for food and drinks. Were always trying to find ways to include the Trappist as our starting point and then off to dinner. Besides the great beers, the cozy dark wood and homy feel makes it a great place to hang out with friends. You got to go with people who you dont mind spending a few leisurely hours drinking and chatting. CHEERS!

I was very excited coming to this place with a large party, but unfortunately the customer service was very poor. The bartender that helped my friends and I was very rude. The bartender literally threw my friends money on the ground for no reason after my friend simply said that he ordered a drink at the other bar in house and was told to go there to get it. To top it off, the same bartender gave me the wrong beer. I wanted to like this place since it seemed very classy, but unfortunately that wasnt the case. Maybe next time it will be a better experience.

Belgian beer on tap. Brats on the menu. Patio out back. Need I say more? Its like having a picnic in downtown Oakland. They have the awesome chalice-like beer glasses and a selection for everyone: IPAs, browns, Belgians, local, domestic, international. The menu is pretty extensive so you can definitely go for lunch or dinner and get a great meal. I usually go for the beer and end up getting hungry. Its really close to BART so its convenient after work or before an As game. Definitely an Oakland institution.

I came here for Oakland Restaurant Week with some coworkers. For $20, you get two pulled pork sandwiches, pickled vegetables, and a 750ml Bottle of Brasserie Dupont Moinette Brune. Great deal!!! The pulled pork sandwich was so good! The pork was cooked perfectly and it was spicy! I also really liked how they did not drench the sandwich with BBQ sauce (not a big fan of soggy sandwiches). Since you pay first, it can be hard to find a table to sit down at. Parking can also be difficult.

i live in west oakland and it is very nice to have a place to go for such nice beers. draughts range from 5 bucks to 8 or so. tiny place, kinda a beer geeks type bar, bartenders are okay, some a bit nicer, others more informed, whatever. a good place to talk with a friend. wish i could bring my kid for a beer, because its nice enough you would be tempted to ask, but the answer is no. i think i prefer toranado in sf by a hair, but so nice to have trappist in oakland.
