Speaking on old experience but the staff is incompetent, rude, and they dont really understand english (which is fine but i had to say "sweet potato fries" eight times and even pointed at it on the menu for the waitress to understand, but each time she just said "ah garlic fries??", time consuming and was kinda rude about it ) then once I got only two items and no one came to my table ever again, even when I ask for help again... its not the first time this has happened. (Every time i went there, the staff is just insanely rude or looks at you like youre an idiot for any simple request you can ask of them...) ... I dont wanna say they were straight up racist since everyone else there was asian and i was the only black girl, and seriously everyone else got served and helped, since several times i ended up there for hours without being checked in on or getting my food on time. (And then my sweet potato fries were overcooked and my other order was lame.) Beautiful place to see for yourself since the decor is amazing, the food choices there are great and they also have a food happy hour where you get a soup and salad for free i think. (I recommend the horoscope drinks they have!!! So good) I hope your experience is better than mine but the food portions are kinda either really small or oddly priced, and the staff is pretty rude. Probably just go to the place once or twice (or with a group since its beautiful as hell in there) but good luck. Its gonna be a bit more than 15 dollars for a good meal

for the most part, i LOVE this place and am so happy i discovered it. hours are late. definitely a plus! when i was there it was a littttle scary b/c there were tons of police outside. then we realized that they were ALL eating inside! LOL this place has a huge menu of desserts, i mean huge! there are SO many options. i thought the "horoscope" drinks was a cute menu idea! these are all asian desserts so i myself felt at home. but my friend isnt familiar with most of the items on the menu but was very happy with her waffle + ice cream, so theres def something for everyone. i walked away from this place thinking....why arent there more "dessert restaurants" around? its a great concept! now for the things i didnt like....there was a wait. like a ton of people here but there were def a ton of empty tables, so it didnt make sense to me? it started making sense when one of the waiters dropped dishes twice....maybe theyre worked too hard? either way, it was stressful to have dishes broken twice in the dining area. the only other reason i didnt give them five stars is because it was freezing in the restaurant, there was some draft coming in and we actually had to ask to move tables to be semi comfortable. despite those two things, i will def come back to try more of the menu.

In Oakland Chinatown you have all kinds of food, dim sum, to quick grab 2 item lunch boxes, sit down cheap Chinese food, and then you get a Hong Kong Cafe restaurant. The colors are bright and poppy with stuffed purple chairs. This place has become a very popular lunch spot, so when you walk in, put your name on the waiting list. There will be a line, but its people waiting for seats. The menu is really large with different selections of dishes such as sandwiches, rice lunch plates, to a la carte, to desserts, weird Asian drinks, to waffles and crepes. It becomes a bit overwhelming to pick something. My co-worker describes this place as Asian fusion, but it is Hong Kong style cafe straight up. We got the pineapple fried rice (served in a carved out pineapple) and the satay stir fried short rib. Both were decent dishes. You have to be adventurous and give things a try, some of the items are pretty fun. One drink my co-worker ordered was dubbed "Sea World" and it had small star shaped fruit, it was blue and topped with basil seeds.

I miss Hong Kong cafes! This one is pretty good. Has a huge menu with a variety of food and drinks. The only downside is that parking is hard to find since its located in Oakland Chinatown, but if you go late at night then its fine. I wanted some dessert, but my friend and I ended up getting beef stew lo mein, egg puffs with coconut pineapple ice cream, purple sticky rice with coconut milk and, I believe, the Virgo drink. The drink was a bit bland and Id rather stick with the usual milk tea order, but still worth a try. The lo mein was yummy and Id get that again. The egg puffs were cooked well, not overly crispy like some places. The sticky rice was good, but I think Ill get the one with mango on top next time for a bit more sweetness. The interior had plenty of plush purple velvet seats and booths.

Freaking love this place. If you ever think you want to have a casual meal, with a tv placing Hong Kong shows in the background and the hustle bustle of your typical chinese restaurant then this is going to be your place. During peak hours, there is quite a wait. There is a sign up list and several chairs are available but usually even those are taken too. Its cheap and its quick, closes so late you shouldnt be out after they close and it opens before a normal human being wakes up. I dont know when they sleep.

Honestly...LOL it was terrible. The Hoi Lan chicken and rice tasted weird. The curry for the fish balls were watery af. The watermelon juice was bland. I usually order it without sugar and it would still be sweet cause the watermelon had always been fine.... until now. (Please dont tell me its because I ordered it without sugar because Ive been doing it for over 3 years now) Maybe this was a one time thing that happens to random people :)

It was not a good experience for me Im afraid or my friend. The coffee we ordered was stewed, the jasmine tea I asked for arrived having been deluged with milk, the vegetable spring rolls, whilst crisply on the outside just tasted of vegetable mush on the inside, my tofu vegetable curry was bland, and tasted like it had lots of not so good for you additives. I can only say this place is at the bottom of the list of places Id choose to eat.

Walked by and decided to give this place a try not really for their food, but for their dessert. Unfortunately most of the dessert was a let down for me. Their mango pudding tasted too powdery and their Logan gelatin was way too sweet. Their silk tofu was not too silky; in fact it was more on the rough side. Theres not much option for these type of desserts in Oakland Chinatown , so I guess its better than nothing if you have a craving.

If you like large menus, youve come to the right place. Their menu is massive. I personally would have a hard time, which is why I have been here with friends who will go ahead and order for me. Everything I have eaten has been fantastic - usually noodles and some vegetable and tofu. For those that like to have an equal amount of beverage with their food, they have a long list of teas, coffee drinks, slushies, etc.
