Ive had Gum Kuo on my list for quite a while and happy to have finally tried it today with my habibi :) We came in at about 2pm on a Tuesday and place was pretty full - not too shabby! Only locals eat here so be ready to eat with chop sticks ;) Their menu includes pretty much any choice you could ever want starting from soups, their versin of porridge, rice and noodle plates, main entrees, apetizers, egg dishes, sandwiches, any type of meat [chicken, pork, duck, beef etc] and plenty of seafood options. What doesnt it have really? Prices are ah-ma-zzz-ing! So many great choices for under $10? WHOA! Dont miss their lunch specials for 7.5$ until 2:30pm!!! Between the two of us we [over]ordered: - beef mushroom rice roll - bbq pork rice roll - chicken fried rice - salt and pepper shrimp Gotta love their delicious rice rolls - just like the typical cheung fun but more rice rolls than usual and lots of meat stuffed inside. If youre ordering a main entre, 1 of these bad boys is more than enough if its just two people sharing. My hubby preferred the beef and i loved the bbq pork :). Fried rice was delicious, not too oily and had that old school smoky flavor - it went well with their chilli sauce. Salt and pepper shrimp was good and fresh but just like plain dry shrimp dish it just didnt go with what we were eating - hubbys fault :P Overall, service was fast and friendly, place is neat, food is delicious and prices are unbeatable. Highly recommend. Dying to come on a cold day to try their porridge :) PS. They accept card payments for bills over 20$. No bathroom inside.

We were in the area and wasnt sure where to go, so we picked the highest-rated, open chinese place at the time, which happened to be this place. All the reviews were raving about the house special congee so I had to order that. The small bowl was still pretty big and can feed maybe 3 other people if youre also eating other things, which we did. In addition, we ordered the dinner special, which was very cheap- it fed 5 peole for under $40, but the menu wasnt very clear nor was the service very great. We started out ordering a soup, then the waitress told us the dinner came with veggie soup so we asked to take the first soup order out. She still brought both soups and made us take it even though we didnt want an over-abundance. Also, she kept trying to talk to me in Chinese even though I told her I didnt speak Chinese. So come for some cheap food, but not much more.

The porridge/congee here is indeed great. That smooth consistency and perfectly salted rice gruel will do you right. Go for the pork and thousand year old egg. Im also a huge fan of rice rolls (cheung fun), and they are very well executed here with that just sweet soy sauce over the top. I like the fried doughnut one and the fresh shrimp rolls. The roast pork (char siu) they have here is the best in Oakland Chinatown and I always grab a half pound to go to throw in fried noodles I make at home or as a snack on its own. Gum Kuo roast duck is also very tasty and packs well to-go. One of the best things about the menu are the Chinese breakfast specials. The jook + noodles + fried doughnut + milk tea can be had for less than $5 before 10:30am. DO IT!

This is our cold weather Chinese comfort food place. This place is a popular lunch place. Sometimes youll end up sharing a large round table with a few other people. This place is popular for their congee sometimes referred to as porridge. They have different types of items they put inside the congee. With the congee we always get a side of BBQ something, sometimes its roast pig, other times its roast duck or BBQ pork. These are small portions so if you want to get a large order let them know.

Best clay pot rice in town. Be prepared to wait 40 minutes for it. Our favorite is chicken with shiitake mushrooms and for an additional $4 or thereabouts a sprinkle of Chinese "laap may". Well worth the wait. Otherwise, try their wonton noodles, "yong chow" fried rice (its got what the Cantonese called "wok hey"), all sorts of "cheong fun", and pickled ginger on "pay daan" ( preserved duck eggs). If youre a fan of chili sauce, try their flavorful home made hot sauce available on every table.

這店不近電梯,不占轉角的地方,東西特別好食。人客同旁邊的另一個金家比,這家客戶比較會多一點,非常奇怪的事情!客人排隊等這家,也不進比較客少,随時有位的另外一個金家?點解?

Best congee Ive had!! I know, I know. Whats the hype on such a simple dish? Well first off, its cheap. Second, the portion is a huge bowl. Third, the congee is really flavorful and thick! No watery soup here. The fried chinese donut was fresh and went nicely with the seafood congee. The rice roll with donut was ok, but Id prefer the shrimp ones. Service is non existent, but eh who cares? The food is cheap and good!

Gum Kuo is a great Cantonese spot for all your roasted meats and Asian eats. They are famous for their roasted pork and various roasted meats. This place is pricey, so bring lots of cash with you. Its frequented by the locals, so expect a wait if you dine in, or call ahead for your takeout orders, next door to the sit-down area. Its a hole in the wall kind of place, so be mentally prepared.

This restaurant is on the ground floor of the plaza underneath the Asian cultural center and the library. Great selection of Cantonese cafe food. We usually get the jook which comes in lots of different flavors. You get a big tasty bowl for a cheap price. Driving and parking downtown is crazy, but BART is easy.

Known for their thick and hearty porridge made in a cast iron pot. Now its more watery with less grains of rice sprouted open. Recently, it went through a two remodeling job. Portions are smaller with a price hike of 15% to meet the city minimum wage. Not a bad place, but the hey days are gone.

Had a worst experience of lunch here. Poor quality BBQ pork and roasted pork over rice. BBQ pork was so dry and the roasted pork was like those left over on the finished customers plate. Yet, it was price was not cheap at all, almost $11 after tax. Worst experience ever in Chinatown!!

Where can you get great wonton noodle soup? HERE!! Make sure to get the donuts too. You have to spend a certain amount ($20?) to use your credit card but you can easily do that with 2 wonton noodle soup and an appetizer. Its crowded during lunch but slows down around 7PM.

It was the opposite of what I was hoping to experience. The food was below mediocre and every food item we had contained exsessive amounts of oil. To me it didnt express the true geniusness of authentic Chinese cusine as it should have. The service wasnt the best as well.

Their congee is the best in the bay area and the prices are VERY affordable. You can feed a family from one large bowl of congee for less than $15! Ive also tried a few of their noodle dishes and their roasted duck and they are all very delicious.

Good jook/porridge here. Its the thicker kind, very flavorful. They have a big selection here, ranging from "really chinese" (e.g. innards), to "american chinese" (e.g. mongolian beef), to HK style bistro. The roast pork and cha-siu are good here.
