Normally, I consider eating at a hole-in-the-wall sushi place a death wish. This is a wonderful exception to my usual rule-of-thumb. Food: You seriously cant go wrong with anything here and their prices cant be beat. The freshness and selection of their fish is equal to, if not better than, some of the most upscale/expensive sushi restaurants in the SF Bay Area. The salmon sashimi appetizer (~$10) has become a standard part of my order. If youre into fancier rolls, my friends and I have sat there licking the plate after finishing the Lion King roll (~$7). If youre not feeling the fish items, they have tempura, bentos, donburis...etc that are also delicious. Honestly, I can go through the menu line-by-line in this review and rave about every single item....but thats just excessive. Atmosphere: This restaurant is TINY. I wasnt exaggerating when I called it a hole-in-the-wall. If youre not the first 5 parties there when they open, have fun standing in line. Dont even attempt to dine in if theres 5+ people in your group. Eating in gets pretty cramped and theyll often try to squeeze 2 parties of two in a small four person table. I highly recommend ordering out. Service: The staff definitely manages the craziness well. Takes a while to get a table but once youre in, the food comes quick. Similarly, its not a long wait when you order for takeout, and you can always call in your order ahead of time. The staff is always very friendly and will give you some free Pokki or other Japanese snacks whenever they think they served you too slowly. Geta is hands down my favorite sushi place in the Bay Area. No competition.

The reviews Ive read about this place were pretty good. Inexpensive good sushi = SCORE in my book. Unfortunately, it only lived up to the inexpensive part. Dont get me wrong, the sushi wasnt bad. It just wasnt as good as I thought it would be. We ordered a boat load of stuffs and the bill was pretty reasonable, so I cant complain there, but the sushi/shashimi was about what I would expect to received based on the price. We started off with toro. Toro...mmmm...[drool], but Ive had better...much better. In fact, the toro here wasnt THAT soft and buttery. It was more flavorful, but more in a ribeye way and not the kobe beef that you expect from toro and above grades. Ive had toro that melts in your mouth...mmmmm..[drool]. We also tried the salmon cheeks. It was good. It was the first time I tried fish cheeks so I dont have anything to compare it to, but it was good. Also had the uni. I thought it was ok. It wasnt funky like some uni can be, but it wasnt really soft either. It was a little firmer than I was expecting, so I dont know if it wasnt served during its prime (which contradicts the lack of funky smells) or if uni Ive had in the past was just mushy. In terms of rolls, we had the lion king, spicy tuna, dragon and rainbow. None were very outstanding. On other visits Ive had the chicken karaage. If you like twice and crispy fried chicken pieces then this is the item for you. Its like tonkatsu on steroids and very filling. Overall, the food was decent but not wow. For the price, it was pretty good. If it was priced similarly to other sushi joints, it would only get 3 stars

This place has the best beef teriyaki Ive ever had. The entree is pretty big and it comes with miso soup, side salad, a healthy portion of hot rice, and a small portion of these cold noodles that are freaking addicting. The beef is also delicious. Its tender and grilled medium rare to medium, which is amazing since it doesnt make it dry. And the sauce. I have no clue what teriyaki sauce they use but it is insanely yummy. Its not cloyingly sweet like most teriyaki sauces; it is perfectly balanced and it goes so well with the beef and the steaming rice. I wake up craving this shiz. The sushi is good too. The fried California roll is made with real crab, which is unique and really good. The fish is fresh and they have a wide verity of rolls. Theres an extra sushi/appetizer menu on the wall if you want more specialty rolls. The restaurant is pretty small and it is definitely an eat and get out kind of place. This isnt a problem because you get your food quickly once you sit down. If youre waiting for a table, youll find yourself mentally screaming at the diners to hurry up because the food inside smells so good.

Very small, casual, and affordable sushi restaurant. The grilled hamachi is a must; its delicious. Everything else was ok. I ordered white tuna, yellowtail, hamachi, and salmon nigiri. The seaweed salad and miso soup was pretty good too. Its well-priced, but the service here is sub-par. They gave us complimentary tea, but it was scorching hot; a temperature that should never be served to customers. They never gave us plates either. The worst was that we put our names down, they estimated 30 minutes so we walked around and came back before our 30 minutes was up. Instead of calling us after the next table, they made us go to the bottom of the list. Not sure I agree with that type of system.

When I want sushi, Im thinking of this kind of place. Hole in the wall restaurant, check; fresh raw fish and delicious cooked fare as well, check; great prices, check. The only problem is that this place is super small and also super busy. So its not exactly the place for a relaxing sit down dinner and tends to feel a bit rushed. Ive heard take out is the way to go, and thats probably how Ill experience this place next. If youre in the area and craving some great sushi, dont pass this place up ( even if you are call in your order and while waiting in line) .

This is pretty much the cheapest Japanese food youll be able to find around Berkeley and Oakland. Be aware that the line can be pretty long and the restaurant is VERY SMALL. Were talking about a 12 person seating capacity. When you order food from here, there are a few shops nearby where you can shop at, and theres a CVS right by the restaurant as well. Also, there is public parking right next to the restaurant, so dont worry about not finding street parking!

Geta manages to do sushi fast, cheap, and occasionally creative. After sampling all of the available options in the neighborhood, Ive become somewhat of a regular here. However, they do not make any effort to source sustainably, so I have stopped going as often as I used to. Almost no seating. operates primarily as takeout. staff may learn your face quickly and start throwing in extras on the house within a few visits.

Yes theres usually a wait, but if you come early (as in before they open) you should be able to score a seat. The place is tiny, but its ok. Youll soon forget once you order!! Sushi is fresh, kitchen food is delicious, and service is quick. Oh and did I mention you can feast on sushi and not break your wallet?! Yes, Im still amazed at that part. This has definitely become my favorite sushi place in the bay area.
