Gen Kai is AMAZING!! Even though I have only been once (sadly), I can still remember the freshness of the sushi!! Went for early dinner so they had some special menu. It was around $10-12 for some sort of sushi/sashimi set. Yes you get the typical tuna, salmon, yellowtail, etc. sashimi but the food quality and portion make this an incredible deal. Repeating what others and myself have said, the fish is probably the freshest Ive ever had. Service was friendly. Even though the restaurant was not particularly busy when we went but it looked a little understaffed. Hope to return soon so I can try their rolls and immerse myself in sushi heaven.

This has been our favorite Japanese restaurant for the past 28 years. Weve searched out Japanese restaurants whenever weve traveled throughout the USA and other countries but have never found another that we liked as well. The fish is always the freshest, their menu is both innovative and traditional and everything is delicious! The owner, manager, chefs and servers are all excellent, friendly and anxious to please. The customers are also great. Weve made many new friends while eating at the sushi bar. This is best place in town for a great meal and fun experience. Barbara & Jerry Anderson

I am so impressed with this restaurant! I am 4 months pregnant and am constantly cold. I came in and mentioned that it was a little chilly. The staff was nice enough to lower the air conditioning for a bit. They quickly brought me tea and miso soup. The sweet server even brought me her jacket to put on top of my lap. The food as well as the service was top quality! This restaurant should have more 5 star reviews. I had an absolutely great experience!! I will definitely recommend this place to anyone and will be here again!

Best Sushi restaurant on the west coast! Go hungry and trust Yoshi the master chef choose for you. Trust me! Every time Ive visited, Ive enjoyed something new and exciting. Perfect for small groups. They were even accommodating to my young son. I highly recommend this place. I also recommend not ordering your normal traditional plain rolls, but be adventurous. Yoshi will impress you with his design and care to the finest details that will make every bite delightful.

Waited for over an hour to have the server lie to us about the cook messing up our order. One of us did not get to eat. They also let their customers get hammered and scream and swear in front of families in the main dining area. Manager was not helpful. The right thing to do would be to the bill. This place went down hill over the last few years.

Their early bird dinner for $10 is a great value. Sushi options are very tasty as well. Boat dinners are popular. Parking is limited so be prepared to walk a bit. Go for a walk down at the marina afterwards. In summary, authentic. Good / pricey made to order sushi. Their early bird dinner special is a good deal. Worth trying

My sweetheart suggested eating at Gen Kai when we were out that way shopping. I was hesitant as we had sushi the night before. So glad he got his way for once!!! LOL!! Everything we ate was top notch!! Their calamari wad EXCELLENT!!, The best I ever had !! Staff couldnt be more kind !!

Just had the worst customer service ever. The sashimi has gone to crap. The quality of fish has gone massively downhill! The servers were high pressure. Ive never stiffed a tip before but we were hurried out mid lunch. Avoid this place at all cost if you dont like food poisoning.

I love the Big O dish. I like sitting at the bar and dealing directly with the sushi chefs. Shrimp tempura is also excellent. Sometimes the servers get really busy so you will have to flag them down for a refill on your beverage. Very creative recipes and high quality meat.

Visiting from out of town and super impressed with this restaurant. Top quality sushi, from top quality chefs using great local Californian ingredients. Some of the dishes have a distinctive Cali or Baja flavour which just makes it even better. Highly recommended!

This sushi restaurant serves traditional style sushi. Dont expect fancy rolls that have crazy names. I think they have a few random rolls but for the most part its all good quality, fresh rolls and sashimi. It averages $10 to $16 an item. Service is good.

Any amateur can make a California Roll. At Gen Kai, the quality of the fish and the artistry of the plating are outstanding. We have been fortunate to eat at some top sushi bars such as Ryokos in San Francisco and Nobu. This place is in that class.

Excellent food and prices! Fridays are the most fun, Helen, the hostess/ manager is very nice to all patrons that walk in. Yoshi, the head sushi chef is amazing! He has sake bombs with his clients sometimes, its fun to be there when hes working!
