We used to go to Clay Pit in Mill Creek (15418 Main St, Mill Creek, WA) occasionally for an average Indian buffet lunch, but there is no way we are going to return. We’ve always been aware that the owners of this place appeared kind of rough around the edges, but we never imagined that they would act so aggressive when it came to the experience we had. At the end of our lunch around 2:25pm on Saturday, July 16th, I brought our toddler son (3.5y/o) to the men’s room. After washing his hands, he reached up to wave his hand in front of the paper towel dispenser. After the paper towel came out, he pulled it off with both hands and the entire paper towel dispenser unexpectedly fell on his face! I was standing behind him and was absolutely shocked at how quickly it all happened and how unstable the dispenser was that it could just fall just by pulling on the paper towel! My son yelled in pain and was scared frozen and I checked his face and noticed that the area around his nose and mouth was turning red and swelling. We immediately informed the restaurant ownership. From the beginning, they were very dismissive and unconcerned about this! The first thing they did was accuse our son of pulling on the dispenser itself, despite him not even being tall enough to touch it! We told one of the owners (a balding, middle-aged Indian man) that they need to fix this immediately so that nobody else gets hurt, especially a child. At this point, we were absolutely astonished at the nonchalance regarding this whole situation, not to mention that they didnt seemed concerned at all about the fact that the dispenser had just fallen on a small child in their restaurant. My wife took pictures of the wall where the dispenser had fallen from, and when she tried to take a picture of the dispenser itself, they put it in their back office and yelled at my wife. The man again accused our son of pulling on the dispenser and was yelling at my wife for trying to take a picture of the dispenser. He then took out his cell phone and took a picture of our son’s face! We asked what he was doing, and he replied, “You tried to take a picture as evidence, so now I am taking a picture of your son!” We asked him to delete the picture and apologize, which he refused to do. Then the co-owner (his sister, a middle-aged Indian lady) stepped in from the front and started to yell as well. I told them that they needed to stop yelling and calm down, especially because we have a small child seeing all of this and my wife is pregnant. They didn’t care about this and continued to yell! Everyone in the restaurant was staring at all of this. The sister harshly said, “What do you want from us? If you really think your son got hurt, let’s go upstairs (the Everett Clinic) and do an x-ray! Otherwise, leave my restaurant!” We were simply asking for an apology and for them to delete our son’s picture, so we were absolutely shocked by their rudeness and unprofessionalism (especially because this is about a safety issue). At this point, we thought it was pointless to continue talking to them, so we just went straight to the front to pay and they said, "You just go, no need to pay. We are even." We told them, “We are paying for the meal because we ate here and you cannot use a free meal to even things out like this, they are two different issues.” The female co-owner continued to yell, “Just leave my restaurant! Just go away!” My wife couldn’t stand this anymore and started to record what was happening. The co-owner saw that and came to my wife and said, “Stop your recording! If you continue, I will call 911 for you not leaving my property!” My son was absolutely frightened from this experience. This was completely unbelievable and beyond anything we would have expected here. Going out for a lunch, we never would have expected our child to get hurt by an unsecured installment, his picture taken without our consent, and our family yelled at and threatened by a restaurant owner!

I wanted to give zero stars...and here is the reason why.... I used to like the taste of food served here for years...and recommended a lot of my friends to come here. Couple of my friends had bad experiences with the owner of the place regarding service and basic etiquette. Yesterday we went there at about 8:40 PM and requested to arrange a table for 8. The waiter took forever to get back to us and at bout 9 PM when i checked back , he said "you have to wait at the door until all people in your party arrive" ---WOW---policy 1 - was educated. I requested to be given a table as we would order some appetizers and tea while we wait for the other 4 people to arrive. We were shown a place to sit. That very moment all arrived...and we were served 2 Papaddam(complimentary) for 8 people....we requested few more....well then came Policy # 2...1.95$ for extra :). We wanted to order the main course asap as i knew they take the last order at 9:15 PM, but nobody showed up until 9:15 and so ordered food and snacks together as soon as we could. The Veggie pakodas we ordered were raw and uncooked from inside...pointed out taken away and then after 5 mins literally thrown on our face...as if this was a complimentary too...and mind you..these were the same we returned...i could see the piece that i had bitten when returned.. only a little darker with the re-frying. As soon as the food arrived....at 9:30PM, the DAL Makhani was pathetic....full of creme and nearly off white in color. Hailing from New Delhi and knowing the taste of Indian food better than anything else, this was no where close to dal makhani. We liked the malai kofta and the tandoori vegetables...so asked if they ccould double that order which would compensate for the dal which nobody wanted to eat. Policy # 3...Kitchen closes at 9:15 PM ....no other place to go...we managed what we could with the little food we had. I wanted to talk to the owner about all this and called him over when ordering desert....he came but was fully prepared for a fight along with his ill mannered head cook...who just bombarded with abuses...and harsh words in front of my family and kids...man...highly frustrating and embarrassing.....the kids got scared...never seen anything like this before...and i just stopped talking and left the place after paying the bill. The owner was not ready to listen to any of the feedbacks...and the cook wanted to fight from the word go Never seen such behavior anywhere in my lifetime.... Would never...ever... go this place... So my advise...if you happen to like 1 or 2 of their dishes...and planning to go there...and accidentally bump into any of their grand policies....please do not give a feedback especially if you are with your family and kids...this person is a jerk.

If I were rating the just food, I would give the Clay Pit a 4. Unfortunately, the service and passive-aggressive waitress forces me to give this a 2. We were seated quickly but waited many minutes before someone came by to take a drink order. The middle-aged woman in the pink sweater (Im wondering if she may have been the owner or owners wife) asked if wed like a drink and I told her 2 "clay pit martinis" ($6.95 on the menu). She then asked which gin would we like, Bombay or Tanqueray. My opinion of the place went up to know that they served a premium gin for their martinis. The drinks finally came but werent extra dry like we ordered - no problem, I can deal with that. By that time, our daughter had arrived but they never bothered to take a drink order for her until many minutes had gone by. We ordered her a drink, 2 more martinis for ourselves and the dinner order. Thankfully the food was good and despite the very slow service, we were enjoying our evening. (However, the evening was periodically punctuated with the loud sound of a Dustbuster which brought all conversations to a halt while we all reflected on our last time under the dentists drill.) When the check arrived, there was a charge for 4 martinis at $8.95 rather than $6.95. When I asked to see our waitress, she said that we had ordered premium gin which was $8.95. We had some back and forth while I told her I felt tricked and she appeared to dig in her heels. Finally she relented, telling us "Ill just have to take it out of my own pocket" with the classic "poor-little-me" tone as if Im stealing from her personally. I asked her if she was trying to make me feel guilty and told her that I wanted to see the owner. She declined to bring the owner (I still question if she may have been the wife of the owner) and that she would fix the bill. When she returned with it, her parting shots were a couple of additional passive-aggressive barbs, "this has never happened to me before" and "thank you for teaching me something" - not at all sincere or in any way attempting to repair the situation. No apologies for any misunderstanding. There are plenty of good Indian restaurants around the Seattle area where a customer is made to feel welcome and is treated with respect. Unfortunately, this place left me with a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended).
