As a Hungarian immigrant, Im always looking for delicious and authentic food from my home country since its so difficult to find here. I am happy to report that the pastries here meet both criteria, in addition to being fairly priced. I came here with a friend on a busy Saturday morning and the place seemed to be packed, with what appeared to be a line stretching out the door, so we were worried that it would be a long wait to get food. We were pleasantly surprised that most people were simply enjoying their food outside or getting food to go, so the line moved incredibly quickly, allowing us to order then take a seat inside within 3 minutes. Food was brought to our table, and we were able to enjoy a nice leisurely breakfast together. The ambience was perfect for a café, and as I looked around I saw a lot of university students and professionals typing away on their laptops. The walls are covered in framed posters showing the covers of the books that were written in this café--I saw many famous books and authors, such as Malcom Gladwell. Just keep in mind that you can only pay with cash for food here (no card reader) and youll be fine. Also, only pastries are served here--no savory food, so if youre not in the mood for sweets, this is not the place for you. All in all, this place is a new favorite and I am definitely returning.

Ive been going to the Hungarian Pastry shop since I was 15. Its wonderful. The pastries are frequently stale (though highly stylized) and the espresso concoctions are decent, though too saccharine. The bathroom is covered in trite political graffiti and the room is dark in the back, which makes one squint to read. The walls are covered in framed prints of fairies, all made by the same artist. The reason I love it though, is because I have had so many magical moments there. Its where I first learned the pleasure of being alone in public, broke up with the first boy I ever loved, went many times to write madly in spiral notebooks to clear my head... I doubt that my experience with the Hungarian is unique. Many people have favorite places and coffee shops- and its quirky one-of-a-kind places like the Hungarian that become those staples. Enjoy!

twice I have visited this bakery and twice their deserts are horrible. they are stale and horribly tasting, dont waste your time and money going there. I visited this bakery about 3 years ago I was attending a family gathering and I did not want to go downtown to Veneiros, bad mistake the cakes were hard, stale and so darn sweet that they made your stomach turn. Ok so I went there 12/30/11 again, gave them the benefit of the doubt, first of all they only accepted cash, by the way this is a sign of a business that is soon to close, and i purchased some cookies and pastries, the cookies were ok, bt the pastries were nasty, stale, hard and horrible. I will never go to this place again.

One of New Yorks greatest cafes. Their Croissants are the Best in New York, and they have all sorts of wonderful homemade cakes, cookies, and pastries. The cafe is always quite lively, filled with students and professors from Columbia University, tourist, and neighborhood locals. Love this place. To make a great days Double Header, go to the Cathedral of Saint John The Devine across the street, its amazing. It is without question New Yorks most phenominal Cathedral. Spend at least a hald hour or more at the Cathedral then go across the street to the Hungarian Pastry Shop for a coffee and pastries. I garauntee it will be one of the best days youve ever had. Awesome!

The Hungarian Pastry Shop may not have the best pastries in town, but it may be one of the greatest spaces to melt into a softly lit corner and read a book, become lost in space, chat with friends or other cafe regulars, and observe the energy that is unique to New York. Get yourself a Russian coffee (like a mocha but without any unnecessarily added sugar) and an almond horn, and you will be set for hours. In the summer months, sit at an outdoor table and enjoy the magnificent views of St. John the Divine. Listen for the squawks of the cathedrals resident peacocks, and you will be set for life - at least a day in the life of New York.

Love the blend of Habsburg Empire and student café. Croissant was the best I have had outside France. The Mohnstrudl (poppy seed) was nice, too. Tea came from a bag, but it was decent. So are the prices. I sat outside in the sun and, found it lovely to wile away the time and even met someone from my hometown in Germany. The toilet was well kept and invites indepth study of a myriad of student graffitis. N.b.: every neighborhood needs an anti-Starbucks café, family run, with no wifi, but heaps of character. You might just start a conversation...

I love this place. Not your typical 1990s coffee shop. No "barristas" here. The Hungarian Pastry Shop is a unique classic of its own. Order at the counter, sit down at one of the many wooden tables, and someone will bring your beverage and pastry to you. Lighting is low. No Wifi. No music blaring. Art on the walls is from the 60s and has been hanging there since the 60s. Quiet, perfect place to read, write, type surrounded by intellectuals. Sip a cafe au lait in peace, sans any obligatory commercialism. Best croissants in NYC.

This is an old world pastry shop with the the charm and lighting you would expect. I went to the shop to purchase a pastry for my friend in rehab at St. Lukes hospital. Her eyes lit up when she saw the pastry and we discussed meeting there in a few weeks. What a delightful place to sip and eat a luscious cake and share some quality time away from the typical coffee shops we have become accustomed to in New York City. I plan to return and share this with my friends.

The mind altering experience is stuff of any project Manhattan has to offer. This is the place not simply of loves engagement but the actual formulaic causation for entire belief systems, which by the way carry lifetime conversation warranted remunerative joy. Always if you hearken back to the moment of a phrases utterance in this pastry shop, the honest sweetness of goodly baked heartfelt consideration, will give a golden crest to the conversation.

Went here on a Sunday afternoon, and had a Cappucino and Baklava. Its a fun scene -- lots of people reading books, students studying, as well as people just catching up. There is pretty dim lighting, which makes this place a little bit more unique. There is a lot of seating, but its really crowded there. Prepare to sit right next to somone else. Right across the street is the cathedral, which is cool to visit as well. Dont miss the peacocks!

Excellentes pâtisseries. La salle était remplie détudiants en train de travailler. On les comprend. Ne pas y aller pour le service (inexistant) mais pour le plaisir dune bon café et dun cheese cake.

The best part of this cafe is that you can serve yourself refills of coffee. They have great caffeinated drinks and the pastries look terrific, although Ive never had one (confession). Its always packed with students and they have no wifi, so its not my favorite place to hang out or study. Its a great place to inspire writing since thats what everyone else is doing-- you can feel the creativity.
