April 2015 Went to Screaming Tuna today and their uni was excellent. Here is one of the indications of non-fresh fish (which you can find at Kyoto) is its served cold to mask the age of the meat (so their fish was never fresh). The uni is usually a good indication of quality, where Kyoto scored only average. Having eaten fresh fish growing up, Kyoto is way overpriced for its lack of quality. Average sushi eaters do not try sashimi therefore do not know the difference between fresh and not-so-fresh fish. March 2015 I have been going here for years now for its convenient location. Today we went there, ordered sashimi like usual, and the fish was not fresh. Talked to the wait staff then talked to the manager. Her customer service was poor and undoubtedly did the wrong thing. We took one piece each out of the three piece order, tasted fishiness, did not eat the last piece. Asked to talk to the manager and she somehow was arguing with us how she knows the fish was fresh, that it came in from the vendor today, and they paid a lot of money for it, that she cant believe we said it was not fresh. Lesson #1 in food industry, it doesnt matter how you try to justify that your food should taste good. Your customer doesnt think so. Especially in this situation, we go there frequently and would not bother to ask them to take it back if it wasnt bad. So we told her, the manager, that if she does not take the item off the bill, we would not come back again. Her response was, ok, and took the credit card. You do not just ok if your frequent patron said that they do not wish to come back if she would not mitigate the problem. So we will be talking to the owner tomorrow when he is at the restaurant. At this point we are not going there again. Nor will anyone I know.

Weve been customers of Kyoto since it opened. It was fantastic when Ricky was still trying very hard to get the business off the ground. He used to try his new ideas out on us and we spent a few years of birthdays celebrating there. (Photos on the entryway wall back then! Fun!) Once his business began to grow, he started the AYCE nights and he hired staff to help roll the sushi. That was when it started to fall apart. We go back every few months to check on it (we LOVE sushi, so its mandatory to keep tabs on how Ricky is doing), but tonight is probably going to be the last straw for quite awhile. First, there were BONES IN THE SALMON IN THE SUSHI !!! I spoke to the manager so she could let Ricky know to discuss it with his supplier and or chefs. But she didnt seem to care. That was disappointing. But the part that really clinched it was that we waited over 20 minutes for a first reorder of 2 rolls on the AYCE, and it still wasnt ready when we asked about it. The place really wasnt that busy by then, so there was no reason for the poor service. We asked for our bill so we could leave. The same manager I spoke with before came to ask if we had been waiting for a while, then got us our bill. Didnt seem to care about that either. We had been there for almost one and a half hours, waited way too long for service and they charged us full price for the AYCE!! Dont they know there are other places that have good sushi in the area? We do and thats where our dining dollars will be going from now on. Too bad Ricky. It used to be good.

So bummed to have to leave a negative review, as Kyoto has been a long-time favorite of mine. Last night I brought two friends in with me for their first time and our service was absolutely horrible. All three of us have been servers, so we understand how hard it can be sometimes. However, our server last night (7/26/15) was just plain rude and awful. He slammed dishes down, rolled his eyes at us, and made us feel generally unwelcome. The worst part was when I had ordered a bottle of nigori sake, which needs to be shaken before served as it naturally separates into two parts. He poured me a glass without shaking it, and as I was asking him if he could please shake the bottle first, he cuts me off mid-sentence saying, "this is exactly what you wanted." He then slammed the bottle on the table and walked away. My friends and I were mortified. We are not rude customers by any means and his behavior and attitude were deplorable. If you cant at least pretend to not hate your customers, DO NOT be a server. I wish I had gotten his name. After being a loyal customer to this restaurant for almost 10 years, I can say with full conviction that after last night I will NEVER return to Kyoto. Which is a shame, because the sushi is some of the best Ive had in Milwaukee. To the management: PLEASE figure out who this server was and talk to him. We were sitting in a booth directly across from the sushi chefs. If I had ever treated a customer like that in my years as a server, I wouldve been fired in 2 seconds flat. Truly a shame.

5 minutes waiting for an emty table to be cleaned. 15 minutes to have the waitress come to ask for your order. If you want the the all you can eat sushi menu they then have to bring that to you since its not on the table. 5 minutes before the menu came. 10 for her to come back an take the order for 4 rolls and salad and soup. 10 to get the salad and soup 10 more to acurtally get fork/chopsticks and napkin to eat the salad. 55 minutes after arival the first two sush roles delivered. 15 more to have them come by and fine the other two were given to the wrong table. 10 more to get the replacements plus 2 additional. check comes 5 minutes after asking for it and the waitress is gone before I can get my credit card out. 10 minute holding the check in the air over my head waiting for her to get it. 5 minutes to come back. 1:55 total and 50$ for salad, coke and 6 sushi rolls But to be fair she did appoigize for the bad service and gave us a coupon for 20% off on out next visit - Not useable for the all you can eat sushi. It may have been a bad night for the waitress, but a good restraunt will always make amends for mistakes with other than a coupon that excludes what you came there for. They were at about 85% capacity during my visit. I will go back - When there is 10 inches of snow and the place is empty.

While I am no sushi expert - this place had some exceptional food! We met with a group of friends for a farewell lunch and had a great experience. Going here we knew it wouldnt be the best place for our daughter to eat, so we picked up something from a drive-thru on the way over. The wait staff had no issue with our daughter eating something from outside of their restaurant - he even joked with her about himself eating some of her food! The server was very courteous, and provided plenty of refills to our party. I was also surprised that we had a party of 10 and he didnt think twice about breaking down our bill to groups and individuals. My wife and I each picked the box lunches, as this was our first foray into this restaurant. Everything that I tasted was prepared very well, and everyone else that was with us could not say enough about their meals either. Since we had a large group, I was pretty surprised at how quickly we were seated on a Sunday afternoon, as well as how accommodating the staff was. If asked to go back, I would be there in an instant - and hopefully will be soon! On the top of my list to return!
