Where else but Milwaukees Fashionable East Side would you find a place justifiably feature on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives? What Comet lacks in restaurant space they make up for in flavor, technique, and bacon. Space is indeed an issue here, and Comets main detractor, though it can hardly be faulted for it. The place was a little more than a bar with a few tables. Now that its been on TV, the place is completely insufficient for the traffic that is coming through the restaurant. Milwaukee is often overshadowed by the accomplishments of Chicago; when the Brew City is singled out, people are quick to support it. My visit began with writing my name on the wait list and standing in the cramped walkway of the restaurant with several other parties for about an hour. Once a seat became available, my party and I were quick to submit our order. Not that there was much question as to what to eat - the meatloaf and compact turkey dinner were two of the meals ordered. The former was the best meatloaf I have ever eaten, not only because there is a distinct lack of gourmet meatloaf out there, but the damn thing takes three days to make. Served with the beer gravy and mashed potatoes, it was welcoming and homey and fulfilling. The turkey dinner was good and a unique approach, though I question if four turkey balls would have been a more hearty meal, especially given the size of some of the other dishes. As if the restaurant wasnt enough, the alcohol menu is something to behold, featuring crazy cocktails, a large selection of wines, and some of the best microbrews from the area, notably Three Floyds. Its one of the only places in Wisconsin to get the brand, actually. Milwaukee is not well known for its gourmet food, but places like Comet show that we have our diamonds in the rough. I would recommend that everyone who is looking to visit take a look at the website first to make sure that the item you want to eat is being served (they serve brunch well into the afternoon on the weekends) and to go during off-peak times.

What a Surprise!!! I always go out of my way to find spots like this! We had to wait a bit because tonight (first Tuesday of every month) was Beer School! Other than the short wait, this is a must do place in Milwaukee. Little did I know that they had been featured on the Food Network, I found this place through TripAdvisor and what a find it was! We had a delightful waitress who was very attentive and a wonderful guide to ordering our fabulous meal. The menu had so many twists on old favs that it was hard to decide. So hard in fact that each of the three of us ordered something different with the agreement to share each of the dishes. We had a Meatloaf Sandwich - A bacon wrapped chunk of meatloaf wrapped in bacon over bread covered with cheesy mashed potatoes all covered with beer gravy! Next we had a Cheesy Ruben which was served open face covered with multiple cheeses and a generous side of fries. Lastly, there was the turkey and cheesy mashed potatoes combined and made into three apple sized deep fried meatballs in a shallow bowl of turkey gravy! All three were great but the fried turkey and mashed potato balls were my favorite! In addition to Beer School on the bar side of the cafe, Tuesday is Classic Cocktail night! I thoroughly enjoyed the Manhattan and even challenged the bartender to con-cock a Brass Monkey for me. The atmosphere was busy and a bit noisy but my colleagues and I had no trouble carrying on a conversation and actually enjoyed listening to the occasional interruption as the Beer School instructor informed the participants of their next specialty beer. Pros: The prices were great! The service was excellent! The food was fabulous! Cons: We dont have a Comet Cafe where I live! Probably not on your diet...but youre not going to eat here everyday...so enjoy!

I really wanted to be a fan of this place. I always seem to be hearing about this place, so I expected better. My parents were in town visiting, and my dad had seen the place on Dinners, Drive-is and Dives and wanted to try some of the food he saw there. We decided to drop in for lunch on a Saturday to see what they are all about. We were disappointed to find that they only serve the breakfast menu until 3:00pm, so the stuff my dad wanted to try wasnt even available for us. We had already had breakfast, and the lunch options were very sparse on their breakfast menu. We decided to stay anyway, since we had already waited 45 minutes for our table. Speaking of, there is no decent waiting space and we were forced to stand out in the cold the entire time. Once we sat down we were able to enjoy the cool Milwaukee divey-chic-urban dinner aesthetics. We found a couple of dishes that sounded good and ordered. The coffee was good, sourced from Anodyne, tho they do not have decaff, you have to order a decaff Americano and you dont get any refills, sorry mom. The food was burnt and bland. Two of us got the spinach and artichoke something or other sandwich that ended up being kind of burnt and not as flavorful as they had hoped. The rest of us had the pulled chicken and jam sandwich, which the menu made it sound like it would be a hot sandwich. It was cold, so kind of unexpected and wasnt what we were hoping for. Quite flavorless and dont call something a "pulled" meat sandwich unless you are actually slow cooking the meat, it was obvious from the tough chicken that this was not the case. The service was decent, but between the long wait in the cold and the disappointing meal, I cant justify anything more than 3 stars at this point.

Been here COUNTLESS times and its always a treat. Cozy/hip place, delicious food, laid back / helpful servers, HUGE bottled beer selection and cocktails. Definitely a gem within Milwaukee. For appetizers I have tried: Duck Confit poutine (tasty, but by end of day usually run out of the duck confit), beer-cheese fries (not as good as the poutine but a decent backup-plan), Spinach Artichoke dip (delicious for sure, they do it right). Entrees Ive had: Buttafuoco, artichoke melt, cheesy roast beef + hot giardiniera peppers (my FAVORITE, this thing is huge and delicious), open-faced meatloaf (probably a good 2nd favorite, truly tasty and special), The Camilla (3rd fav, fried chicken sandwich, really good), big luck burger, NUMEROUS of their burgers of the month (back when they had them, theyve kinda stopped doing that), and the Akimbo burger, which has been discontinued for years but every once in awhile they bring it back (huge tasty sandwich, I suggest bring a friend and split it). The fries they serve vary from OK to GOOD, sometimes they get over-fried which lends them to being nearly burnt yet soggy, and other times they are pretty amazing, doesnt seem to coincide with what time of day/week/month at all. Always a huge and changing beer selection, great to try out new things. Their deserts (pie/cupcakes) always look good but they lose their freshness by the end of the day. I suggest you follow their Facebook account as theyll post about special items they will only make for a single day or two (usually really good). Anyways, one of the greats in Milwaukee IMO.

I would say the best thing about this place is probably the drinks! Unique and quality drink concoctions. I got a Leghorn samich and the best thing I can say about it was that the chicken wasnt dry other than that it was bland at best. Plus the bread wasnt toasted like it said it would be. The frys were pretty good, not greasy and the course salt made them tasty. We also ordered eggs hashbrowns and a slice of meatloaf. The only tasty thing on the plate was the gravy. Other than that it tasted like bland eggs, hash and meatloaf would, Idk I wasnt that impressed with the food. Also, got a pistachio muffin that again, was bland at best! Also, after waiting 15 minutes outside to be seated, it irked me that the guy who seated us told me that it would take another 20 minutes to be seated at a booth, but the counter had immediate seating, so, we sat at the squished counter and 5 minutes later 3 booths opened up! They definitely lived up to their standard of moms cooking, but I dont know if I want to go out to eat and pay for home cooked food. I would expect it to be a little better plus mom wouldnt make me wait 45 minutes to eat either and charge $40 w/out tip. AVERAGE ENTREE IS ABOVE $5 I would rather eat at Franks Diner in Kenosha even though there is a wait to eat their as well, the food is good and the service is super fun and funny! They go out of their way at Franks Diner to have fun with you, its a schtick they put on!
