I ended up at That BBQ Joint (TBJ) by happenstance after my efforts to visit the newly opened A-OK Coffee location on East Washington Avenue were foiled by my inability to find a parking space. But my luck was not all bad that day as both the food and service at TBJ exceeded my expectations. There is a definite black and white theme to the restaurant interior. The interior walls have a fresh coat of institutional white paint, with black trim around the doors and windows. The menus are written on whiteboards with black ink and the food comes on a black & white checkerboard patterned paper liner. The large front windows allow for waves of natural light to stream into the interior and allow diners keep tabs on the action taking place on Willy Street. While the building has seen better days, the new occupants have cleaned it up nicely. Since TBJ does not have waiter service, I had limited interaction with the staff. Nonetheless, all the staff members I interacted with were courteous, polite and helpful. As a first time visitor, my order taker offered helpful suggestions when I mentioned I was visiting for the first time. He also checked in to see what I thought of my sandwich which doesnt always happen at counter service restaurants. Throughout my time at TBJ, this employee was constantly tidying out the dining area and checking the condiment supply levels when there was a break in the somewhat steady flow of lunch time customers. I elected to go with the Thursday special, the TBJ Cubano sandwich (pulled pork, ham, mustard, pickles and a pressed, well-buttered French roll). Mad props to the kitchen for their fantastic griddle work on the French roll as every bite yielded a satisfying crunch. The pulled pork component provided plenty of porky deliciousness. The Achilles heel of the sandwich was the ocean of generic yellow mustard slathered onto the sandwich. With a little better balance, this could be a top echelon sandwich in town with an amazing stable of sandwich offerings. Bonus content: TBJ sells bottles of their sauce for $8. After this positive first impression, a return visit to TBJ is certainly in my future. The wonderful aroma of smoked meats wafting through the restaurant during my first visit has me eager to try there more traditional BBQ offerings of smoked brisket, ribs, pulled pork and smoked chicken.

Well I have said it before and I have to say it again. I LOVE PIG BUTT. You enter the bbq joint as a customer but leave feeling like family. I didnt think it was possible for them to improve on there already GREAT menu but they have. The location and space improved and so did the food WOW. I am so happy for the owners at this place they really have done a AWSOME JOB. If you havent been here yet WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR. More food for me then. If I wasnt so full I go back in now. Thanks all for your comittment to your food and customers love you.

A friend and I stopped in last weekend, unknowingly right at the time when they close for an hour (2:30-3:30 I think?). Someone mentioned it to us as we walked in, but the guy at the counter (maybe the owner or manager) said to stay and hed be happy to make something for us and we could hang out. Really nice! AND THE FOOD. After living in Memphis for a year, I didnt hope to find any decent BBQ this far north, but this was GOOD. I had the Italian Brisket sandwich and my friend had the pulled pork. I will go here again any chance I get!!!

This is easily the best BBQ place in Madison. The owners and staff are all wonderful, and we have yet to have a bad experience. My favorite items are the Creole chicken sandwich and the jalapeno hush puppies. My husband is from the South, & he swears by their BBQ and greens. If you can, save room for the pecan pie - it is worth every calorie. This is our must-have lunch every time we are in Madison. We always leave very full and very happy, and we recommend them to everyone we know.

There is no better business in Madison. Family owned and managed. The coolest, kindest and most talented business owners. Located on Williamson Street and open Tuesday thru Saturday from Noon until 8p - Sunday 12 to 6p. Closed one hour for family dinner from 230p to 330p. Smoked meat perfection, fresh sides and even a vegan option or two. Please do not forget the sweet potato and pecan pie. Everything is made with love and flavor. You will be hooked once you try it one time...

The food was fantastic! The menu board is simple and clear, I appreciate that. The cashier (who I later found out was new on the job -3 weeks) had a poor attitude and almost made me want to leave, thankfully the smells and my anticipation made me stay! The owners were dining next to us and overheard our conversation regarding the cashier so they spoke up and introduced themselves, apologized, and brought us pie!

Great food, wonderful service. Even when they are packed to the gills Ive never had short or rude interactions with anyone who works there. Brisket sandwich is out of this world. Ive also had the ribs and rib tips without complaint. Also the mac and cheese ball is deliciously sinful (with their mustard - there are no words). I really cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Ive been an employee for the past year, so take as you will. I firmly believe that any food we put out has been properly handled and expertly crafted. Clement Henriques has a way with food. All his concoctions that havent made to the menu have taken me off my feet. Trust in us that were putting out the best product possible.

Just moved into the neighborhood and we were taking a walk around to see what was around us, saw they were open and decided to go in and grab a take-out menu. Instead they sent us home with Thanksgiving dinners! What a great thing to do for the community. The turkey was delicious, we are excited to go back for the bbq!

As a southerner, I was so happy to try this place. Madison is notoriously AWFUL for BBQ, but That BBQ Joint came through. I had the half rack of ribs w/ baked beans and creamy slaw. It was all just so good. This was my first positive BBQ experience since moving here, and I will definitely return.

Your typical menu for a small BBQ house but the food and service were very good. Drink options include coke products, Sprecher Root beer and New Glarus pilsner Porter lager and ale. Great afternoon lunch stop.

Love this place. I get a 5 lb. tray of pulled pork with their regular sauce for special events. Ive lived all over the South and this is some good stuff. Great friendly service and a nice new location.

Im from the south. It is very hard to find bbq worth eating in Madison. That BBQ joint has fantastic food. They have irregular hours, but definitely worth planning your schedule around them.
