First time I have been thrown out of a restaurant or a bar sober. I guess they do like Harley riders, Not...... We were down in Yorktown Yesterday to tour the French ship Hermione. We had an hour to kill before our 3:20 boarding so we were looking for a play to eat a light snack and sit near the river. There was no line getting into the restaurant and we walked in by the bar. No hostess to seat us either. We saw a few empty tables out side in the sun so we figured it was OK to seat ourselves. After about 30 minutes of not getting a waitress to come over voluntary , I flagged one over to our table. I asked her if she could wait on us ? Her response was " Where you on the waiting list or did you seat yourselves ? I told her we did not see a line nor a hostess so we seated ourselves outside where there were empty tables. She took our drink order and left. About five minutes later a man in a white shirt came over to our table. He told us that since we by passed the waiting list and seated our selves that he could not serve us. he told us that we could stay at the table but we would have to go to the bar and get our drinks and food. I mentioned to him that there were about 10 tables outside near us that we empty , that being the case why was there a waiting list to be seated ? His face changed color and he asked us to leave his restaurant. I told him that we would and that I would make sure and tell everyone I know and will met down in Yorktown how Biker friendly his establishment treated us .

My husband and I were excited to come to this restaurant from the reviews, but once we arrived, our expectations changed. From the time we walked into the lobby to the hostess, the vibe that we felt was not good. I told the hostess that we had two in our party and gave the hostess our name and then the hostess proceeded to tell us it will be an hour wait. So we said ok, since we drove from Virginia Beach, VA just to come eat here. As my husband and I were looking at the wine & candle display in the lobby, a gentleman came in and approached the hostess and he said that he had 6 in his party. He was told by the hostess that it would be a 45 min wait. What gives??? So my husband and I told the hostess that we were going to walk around and come back. We came back about 15 mins later and I approached the older hostess that was at the counter and asked how long the wait would be for our party since we only had two people. The older hostess looked at the wait list and stated that she would seat us (and she did). Once seated, our server was not attentive to our needs. It seemed like more attention was give to the parties that were sitting outside. I wont come back. Mr. & Mrs. Porter

We visited the restaurant on our honeymoon. We had heard good things about the restaurant, and even though initially we were told there were no window seats, they did seat us next to a window. We were pleased. The atmosphere was great, and the food was pretty good--but pricey. Our main problem was as follows. I ordered a vodka martini. When the dinner was over, I noticed I was charged for a Grey Goose vodka martini. I questioned the waitress, and she told me that she does this all the time as she thinks the house vodka martini is terrible. She--obviously flustered--never came back to our table and sent another server out to give us our check. I called the manager, Kathy, after we got home and told her about this. She took down my name and address and said shed get back to us right away. She said that this (overcharging) is not standard operating procedure in her restauraunt and that she was not pleased. I honestly assumed she was going to send us a coupon for a free meal or something. I think that would have been the classy thing to do. But as it turns out, she never did got back to us. She never contacted us again. And we wont be returning, unfortunately, to this restaurant.

My husband and I chose to visit this restaurant based on the many reviews and high praise on this site. I was very much looking forward to having lunch at the Rivah Cafe as part of a short getaway to Williamsburg. I was hoping to recreate a wonderful outdoor dining experience we recently had in Massachusetts. But that wasnt to be. We did get our outside seats, but that was the only positive part of the meal. I ordered the crab dip as an appetizer, something that I rarely do. I wish that I hadnt! It was very greasy, had a very small amount of crab, and was accompanied by some very greasy and stale-tasting chips. Okay, I figured at least the meal itself would be good. I got the Old Bay crab salad. I was surprised at how many shrimp it had, but the Old Bay taste was simply some of the spice sprinkled on the salad. My husband got the Caroline barbeque, which was also greasy and caused him an upset stomach. Dessert?! No way... we just couldnt wait to get out of there. The only real plus of the visit...the view. Beautiful sailing ships passed right in front of our seating. Save your money....eat somewhere else.

Great Location, Not Great Seafood. Salad: Good. Mashed Potatoes: Good Fish: Average. Small portion (1/2 my hand) Dunked in the Mashed Potatoes. Everything, lukewarm. WHY WOULD YOU DIP FRIED FISH IN MASHED POTATOES???? they did this to my mothers fish, too. Ruins the texture. the "Signature Fry" was a very small piece of fish, dunked in mashed potatoes, 2 shrimp, and 3 soggy fried oysters. Gave the crab cake to my mother, she said was it good, so I raised this review up to 2 stars for that crab cake. Poor excuse for a "Signature Seafood" dish, $28. Great view, good service, really average food, presented with "Gourmet" flair, in meager quantity. "Sweet" tea is unsweet tea with syrup. If your server forgets to stir, youll get 1/2 unsweet tea, 1/2 sugar heart attack. So make sure to stir if you get "Sweet" tea here. 3/4 people at our table didnt like their food. It was my sisters birthday, so nobody wanted to complain, tho. The people who own this restaurant, obviously never eat here. Probably someones investment project. Have a glass of wine here, enjoy the view, eat dinner somewhere else.

We love the view and the location, and have chosen the restaurant many times on holidays for our large gatherings. However, on holidays they do buffet style and this past Easter it was sadly lacking for almost a $400 bill. The buffet area was messy and looked picked over. Admittedly we were in the last group to be seated towards the end of the day, but still I was disappointed. We went there for the lighted boat parade wine dinner and were individually served. We had a lovely time. The food was great, the service excellent. We went there to celebrate a birthday and ordered off the menu, and also enjoyed the experience. We will still visit this fine restaurant, however after the Easter Buffet experience, will either be the first seating or skip this restaurant, and find another place to order off the menu.
