My wife and I dined here last week on our trip to the Shenandoah National Park (we are from NJ). Id researched the area restaurants and had high hopes for this place, based upon the many positive reviews here. I should have heeded the warnings, but every morning of our trip as we headed up to Skyline Drive from Luray we would pass by the Brookside and its signs advertising "Down Home Cooking." After a couple of mediocre meals elsewhere, we figured "Down Home Cooking" was probably a good bet. I was starving from a day hiking on the Appalachian Trail and eager for a good, hearty meal. Lets start with their much-vaunted buffet. It was tiny, with only five or six items (none of which looked particularly appetizing). The night we were there it was fairly crowded and yet no one was going anywhere near the buffet, so I certainly did not seem alone in my low opinion of it. I ordered the broiled half-chicken instead. The chicken was well prepared, both juicy and tender in a lovely herb sauce. Too bad it was also tiny, more like a cornish game hen than a fully-grown bird. The side of mashed potatoes and gravy was also disappointing. They tasted like they came out of a box. I might have been able to look past that in my hungry state had the portion been a decent size. As it was, it was the tiniest portion of mashed potatoes Id ever seen. It was the size of a scoop of ice cram. You would think that a restaurant in rural Virginia offering "Down Home Cooking" could get mashed potatoes and gravy right. My wifes green beans (also an item you would think they should get perfect) was described by her as tasting "like they came out of a can." I was pretty disappointed overall and would recommend steering away from the Brookside.

You like a baked potatoe half cooked, flounder that was undercooked, unfriendly wait staff and no "down home cooking" to be found. Everything tasted as if had come from a box. The waitress we had seem unappreciative. We heard wild reviews about this place except was told someone didnt like it and I wish we had paid attention to that review and not all the others. Uncle Bucks is the place to go if you want good food and great service. Avoid Brookside like the plague!!!!!!!!

I dont know where some of these people ate that gave 1 star but it wasnt at the Brookside that I was at. The lunch buffet my wife and I had was excellent and the price was very reasonable. The buffet included different entrees, salad bar and many deserts to choose from. The waitress was quick, polite and helpful. Brookside was recommended to us by friends and I would definitely recommend it and will return soon.

The eggs werent cooked to order and they were absolutely swimming in grease..disgusting. The grits werent just cool, they were cold. The server was more interested in talking with co-workers than taking care of the only table in the house. And to top it all off, they were cleaning overhead air vents in the dining room. Not happy. Outstanding. My day is complete. Sick on both ends...to be polite. Never again

To me, Brookside Restaurant is the quintessential "tourist trap" which peddling the cheapest variety of whole sale restaurant food. No matter what your order, it will taste bland at best. Mostly, Brookside relies on buffets and volume over quality. The few times Ive been there I have had no issues with service, just the quality of the food. Terrible...absolutely terrible.

Since this seems to be the 24th good review I will keep it simple and say that our time at the cabins was bliss, and the food at the restaurant was unbeliveable! I probably gained several pounds during that trip due to that restaurant, and it was totally worth it. Do NOT forget to take some of their bread home with you! Mmmmm

The map location is incorrect....Brookside Restaurant is located 4.5 miles east of Rt 340N intersection with Hwy 211. Request for correction of map is pending. Use map locator for Brookside Cabins (Marker "B") That is almost in the correct location, actual is 1/4 mi further west (left) on the map.

The 30 item buffet include the salad bar items so it is about 8 hot items(fried chicken, roast beef, boiled potatoes, ect). I ordered the fried Flounder. It was large and very crispy. It was good! We were in the area just for the day but I would eat there again if I was close by.

Just had an Easter buffet. Excellant meatballs, fried chicken, breaded shrimp, green beans with bacon, cheese potatoes. This was the best meal Ive had while visiting virgina!. Wife did salad bar and chicken parmasean. She like both. Good food for resonable prices!

The breakfast was simply delicious! My favorite was the Virginia ham. The coffee was great, as well. The staff were welcoming and very friendly. Of course, Im partial to all things "country", but I submit that this truly was a great dining experience.

We have been going to this restaurant for many years. Its a cozy place at the base of the mountain to skyline drive. The food has always been great, the staff is great as well as the owners. We have been repeat customers for over 20 years.

My husband and I happened upon Brookside during our stay at SNP. Great food and service! We will definitely visit again when we are in the area. Bonus for us: We saw a small black bear in the parking lot when we were leaving! :)

We discovered this location by accident as we were looking for someplace to sleep, we were able to get a cabin, really great customer service, and the breakfast was really good too, would recommend.

The service was fine. On the other hand the food, the portions, the decor, the menu were about as bad as it gets. The only place in VA that can mess up broiled cod and baked potato.

It wasnt bad but it wasnt worth what we paid for buffet. Sour Crout with cut up hot dogs? No thanks. Im thinking ordering off menu is best way to go. Staff was nice. Place was clean.

The food is excellent at this little diner-style restaurant and kept very clean. The buckwheat pancakes are great breakfast before heading into the mountains.

Very nice place, as long as you do not expect haute cuisine. Small but tasty buffet. Friendly staff. Prices reasonable. Will return.

the food is nasty and the straff runs the gamut from indifferent to rude. The "buffet" makes one ill to look at it. BEWARE!

Staff was friendly, food was great for the price. Service was somewhat unattentive because of staff shortage. But worth it.
