Tsunami is likely the best sushi in the state. Heres the good and maybe a few things to be aware of. The lunch boxes are a staple at the office on weekdays and I frequent their dinner fare as well. They have the freshest and best executed sushi Ive found in Utah with a great price and other sushi restaurants dont even compare (sorry happy sumo.) The management is amazing. Ive dinned in more times that I care to admit and almost each time a manager has checked by to ensure the service and quality. All of the servers are prompt and have an extended knowledge of the dishes served and even beer and wine pairings. The menu is expensive. Burgers, steak, sashimi, miso, and countless sushi rolls, Im hoping some day Ill have tried it all. Sir far the favorite are: Don Juan, Firebreathing dragon and chefs choose sashimi. Theres a small patio open seasonally and try the locally made cheesecake for des sert. The downers? (I am loyal to the sugar house location so this is speaking specifically for them only) Seating is minimal and there is often a wait. They are busy. Always. On the rare occasion the service can reflect how busy they are, but remember, Utah servers make 2.13 an hour and are doing their best to keep up with such a fast pace restaurant. All summed up: Local. Fresh. Professional. Friendly. Always busy.

We went in on Sunday and ordered to-go at the bar up front. The bartender offered us some water while we waited for our food. That was about the most pleasant part of our experience. Sitting next to the cash register while an "employee meeting" took place felt so awkward. Really they were just all standing around bitching about their job. I had to listen to a convo the hostess had with one of the managers about how sick shes been and how she hoped she could make it through work without throwing up... The food itself was ok. We paid around $45 bucks for two of us with no leftovers. The sushi rolls were very dry and fell apart immediately. I had asked for some extra sauce but because we didnt have extra cash and had already run our card, they refused. Fair enough. However, they forgot the sauces that were included with purchase. The salmon and tuna inside the rolls tasted old and unfortunately that was at least half of the meal price. The experience was over priced for such service, quality and cost. We wont be going back anytime soon.

Stopped in for a quick lunch with an out of town relative. The sushi was great, but the service and overall staff vibe was terrible and incredibly unprofessional. The busser was walking around with a toothpick in his mouth the entire time, which he later swapped out for a lollipop... Not only was this unprofessional to see, but the fact that he was adjusting the toothpick (and later lollipop) with his fingers, and then immediately thereafter touching dishes and other surfaces in the restaurant, was disturbing and clearly unsanitary... Needless to say, this young mans food handlers permit should be reevaluated for validity. He was unfriendly and seemed to hate every moment he spent in the restaurant and amongst diners. Our server was very friendly and did a great job. The restaurant had cobwebs in the windows and corners. Again, not the cleanly kind of atmosphere one typically expects to see at a relatively high priced sushi restaurant. Overall, do not recommend.

As I have always had great food from Tsunami, this time was a bit different. I ordered a chicken rice bowl to go with a side of extra veggie. Usually this is great with no issues the other two times I have ordered it, but this time not so good at all, I felt like I got the left overs and they tried to scrap together what I ordered. There was not much rice at all in the bowl, then there were bits and pieces of chicken, and the extra veggies was mostly just tempura onion rings and one asparagus. The teriyaki sauce that comes with it is usually very good, this was watered down soy sauce I kid you not. Maybe it was do to the fact I ordered it at 2:50pm and there lunch special ends at 3:00pm, I would rather of them say, we dont have enough right now for my order, and would have to order off the dinner menu, I would have been fine with that. I guess I will just stick to their sushi if I decided to go there again.

We in to order lunch to go. The jumble to help me was new and obviously have not even been trained at the register. It mustve taken 15 minutes of struggling just to take the order. I didnt waited 25 minutes for my food at the bar. Everything in the bag after waiting a long Much to my dismay Was cold. And fortunately I ordered hot food not sushi. I wore the lunchbox with tempura shrimp and chicken teriyaki. In a second lunch of chicken Kutsu and a side of miso soup. I will say this it was the best part shockingly, it was almost hot even. Everything else including the tempura vegetables and shrimp and Chicken Katsura were barely warm at best most or actually cold. If I were sitting in a rush I definitely wouldve sent it back. Maybe this is a place in only specializes in sushi, but if youre looking for something else its farther places the for the money.

This review is only for the customer service I have received so far on the phone with the staffs at the Union Park Ave location. One of the staffs didnt even tell me there is a private room available when I asked her if I can have a private space for a birthday party. Even though I decided not to take the room after I was told there is a fee the second time I called, I still feel the staffs should offer all available services to customers whenever possible. Also the staffs need to be more polite and helpful on the phone. I just expect a lot more than just an average from Tsunami based on what I have heard about it. This will be my first time trying Tsunamis food and I have heard quite a few good things about it. So hopefully the quality of the food and in-store service will compensate the somewhat disappointing customer service on the phone.

The food here is great, and the atmosphere is awesome. But some of the servers are not all that impressive. I have been going to the Tsunami in Sugarhouse for a long time, and have always enjoyed it... Until recently. A girl named Lauren was our waitress, and I can honestly say I have never seen someone act so distracted and careless. When she first greeted us, she seemed very preoccupied and annoyed to have to serve us. Being a server at a nice restaurant, you should be genuinely happy and ready to serve your loyal customers, Lauren was NOT. She was not pleasant, and when my wife got up to use the restroom, she even noticed that Lauren was rude to some of her coworkers. I speak for both my wife and I when I say that when we come back to Tsunami, we will avoid having Lauren as our server at ALL costs.

The service by all of the waiters and waitresses is excellent.. So why did I write Poor. I called and told Chris, the guy working the desk that I would be there in a few. He said they close at 10:00 and I got there at 10:02. Chris saw and heard me knock and turned his back to me and refused to come to the door. While standing at the door (Glass) I called on my cell and asked to speak with the Manager who reluctantly came to the door. When I told him what happened though he apologized it did not seem sincere. Chris you did a disservice to me, a long standing customer and to every single employee of Tsunami. If you worked for me I would have fired you. I have eaten at restaurants all of the world and never had such disrespectful and rude behavior directed to me. Shame on you Keith Walker
